1 97 th Annual MICHIGAN ASSOCIATION OF REGISTERS OF DEEDS CONFERENCE September 18-21, 2011 Stafford s Perry Hotel Petoskey, MI President Bambi Somerlott Hillsdale County Register
2 Many people have worked very hard to make this conference a success. This beautiful location, charming hotel and talented, local entertainment were all made a reality by Kathy Haiker s efforts. A time consuming task and all accomplished while dealing with her professional and personal responsibilities! Conferences are not an inexpensive proposition and we have many vendors to thank for that aspect of conference planning as well, particularly PropertyInfo for the President s reception; Dodak, Johnson and Associates for Tuesday night s banquet; and Fidlar Technologies, Manatron, Simplifile, Trimin Government Solutions and Tyler Technologies for various breaks. Our conferences would become cost-prohibitive if not for the continued generosity of our vendors. Please make certain to visit their booths and more importantly to consider their products and services when the time comes to purchase or update. Finally my eternal gratitude to Melissa DeVaugh who continues to devote her time and talent for the benefit of this association; our professional-looking Conference Booklet and Tuesday night s place cards are all compliments of Melissa s expertise with publishing software programs. I think it important to point out that because of staffing issues in Lapeer County most of this work was accomplished at home after working long hours virtually alone most of the day at her office. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve for and with all of the incredible and talented members of this association; thank you. A Pioneer in Elegant Lodging In 1899, just four years after Petoskey was incorporated as a city, Dr. Norman J. Perry built the hotel after giving up his dental practice (a patient had died following a multiple tooth extraction). He operated the Perry until 1919, when it was purchased by Drs. John and George Reycraft. They intended to convert the Hotel into a hospital, but Petoskey s city fathers felt there was such a demand for a year-round hotel that they convinced the brothers to build their hospital in another location. The Doctors selected their nephew, D. Herbert Reycraft, as hotel manager. Under his direction the Perry Hotel became a lively center of attraction featuring a small orchestra during dinner and dances at least once a week. Its popularity demanded expansion, so the Reycrafts doubled the capacity to 300 guests when they added a four story, 46 room wing in Herbert Reycraft and his wife, Hazel, retired in The Reycrafts then sold the hotel to John Davis, at which time Davis made extensive improvements including the panoramic window which overlooks Little Traverse Bay from the dining room. Under his ownership, he changed the name to the Perry- Davis Hotel and operated the hotel until Alan Gornick purchased the hotel in the 1970s. Stafford s Hospitality purchased the Perry in We have undertaken extensive interior and exterior restoration to this historic landmark. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Sites as well as its State of Michigan counterpart. Of the 21 hotels in operation in 1900, the Perry Hotel is the only one still in operation today. Bambi

4 Speaker, Trainer, Corporate Entertainer Meet Tim Cusack Public Speaker, Tim Cusack, has entertained and touched thousands over 25 years of speaking, training and entertaining working with some of the largest companies in the United States. From the classroom to the boardroom Tim presents his audiences with unique experiences and original perspectives, connecting organizations one individual at a time. He has the rare ability to relate to large groups of people on a personal level. Tim enhances organizational culture through humor, stories and insights. He delivers meaningful and dynamic programs that inspire people to appreciate life, work and relationships. Do you desire a keynote speaker who is unique - fun with a strong takeaway? Tim s philosophy: First and foremost, I believe it's who we are that we bring to what we do. During my presentations I want people to have their own discoveries about their professional and personal lives -- insights that can help them be happier, healthier and more productive. Why spectate when you can participate? My keynotes and workshops are not just sit and git. The audience is engaged from start to finish. I know that every group is unique. In each program, I work with the environment and audience to enhance the message you want to convey. My programs are very story-driven. Throughout history, we know that people have learned best through stories. Combining stories with lots of laughs makes for an unforgettable message MARD Conference Attendees Livingston County Register of Deeds, Sally Reynolds Mackinac County Chief Deputy Register, Deborah Holle Marquette County Register of Deeds, Patricia Manley Mecosta County Register of Deeds, Karen Hahn Menominee County Clerk/Register, Cindy Payne Midland County Register of Deeds, Julie Atkinson Midland County Chief Deputy Register, Scott Haines Montcalm County Register of Deeds, Lori Wilson-Mazzola Montmorency County Register of Deeds, Teresa Walker Newaygo County Register of Deeds, Linda Landheer Newaygo County Chief Deputy, Dianna Weaver Oakland County Clerk/Register, Bill Bullard, Jr. Oakland County Chief Deputy, Christopher Ward Oceana County Register of Deeds, Rick Hodges Ogemaw County Register of Deeds, Denise Simmons Osceola County Register of Deeds, Nancy Crawford Oscoda County Clerk/Register, Jeri Winton Oscoda County Chief Deputy, Becky Galbraith Otsego County Clerk/Register, Susan Defeyter Ottawa County Register of Deeds, Gary Scholten Ottawa County Chief Deputy Register, Kathy Haiker Presque Isle County Register of Deeds, Cathy Idalski Presque Isle County Chief Deputy, Barb Oswalt Saginaw County Register of Deeds, Mildred Dodak Saginaw County Chief Deputy, Penny Klein Shiawassee County Register of Deeds, Lori Kimble Tuscola County Register of Deeds, Dan Grimshaw Wexford County Register of Deeds, Lorie Sorensen
