1 Micro Meetings Participating Leaders Ben Thompson Short Film Programmer, Tribeca Film Festival Coming from a proud Welsh upbringing Ben Thompson joined the Tribeca Film Festival in 2003 and began working with the filmmaker and programming teams. After half a decade of watching short film submissions Ben became the Short Film Programmer for the festival. Throughout the year he also gives talks at film schools to young filmmakers and students about festival strategy and submissions and continues to program short film events in New York. Ben has also directed and produced dozens of short films and documentaries and screened at over 30 festivals around the world. Matt Lloyd Director, Glasgow Short Film Festival Matt Lloyd has worked in film exhibition in Scotland for sixteen years. He was short film programmer of Edinburgh International Film Festival between 2004 and 2008; his critical history of EIFF How the Movie Brats Took Over Edinburgh was published in Matt was director of Inverness Film Festival from 2006 to 2008, and produced two unique film events for the Oscar- winning actor Tilda Swinton and filmmaker Mark Cousins, The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams (2008) and A Pilgrimage (2009). He has directed Glasgow Short Film Festival for six years, in which time it has grown from a modest two day event into Scotland s leading international short film festival. Matt has directed two short fiction films and one short documentary. Lesley Birchard Executive in Charge of Production, CBC Docs Lesley Birchard is an Executive in Charge of Production with CBC Unscripted, where she develops and oversees production on a number of television and digital specials and series. Recent projects include the comedy series Still Standing, the documentary Balletlujah with k.d. lang, arts web series The Re- Education of Eddy Rogo and the development of the new CBC Arts brand. Lesley is currently overseeing a new digital initiative with CBC Docs, working with emerging documentary filmmakers to create original digital documentary content for CBC. About CBC Docs and what you are looking for: CBC Docs is reaching out to the next generation of Canadian documentary filmmakers to tell their stories by creating original digital documentary content for CBC. Pitches are being taken immediately, and content must be produced and delivered between now and April 2016, with the intent of being released on CBC s digital platforms and social channels. CBC Docs goal with this initiative is to give emerging documentary filmmakers those starting out in the field and with a passion for telling stories in the documentary genre
3 the opportunity to take their careers to the next level and reach a national audience. We intend to put a significant focus on supporting emerging Indigenous documentary producers and directors. CBC Docs is looking for stand- alone documentary concepts that focus on a single, unified, strong narrative, approximately 5 to 15 minutes in length. At this time, we are not looking for interactive documentaries. Content should be distinctive, contemporary, character- driven and relevant to Canadians. Justine Pimlott Producer, English Program, Ontario Centre, National Film Board Justine Pimlott recently joined the team at the National Film Board of Canada, Ontario Centre as a producer. She brings a long track record of giving a voice to people and points of view that are often absent from the mainstream media landscape. In 2000, her debut film Laugh In The Dark won Best Social Issue Documentary at Hot Docs International Documentary Festival and Best Canadian Film at the Inside Out Festival. In 2003, she formed Red Queen Productions with Maya Gallus to create provocative films about women, social issues, culture and the arts. In addition to this role, he also joined the Sundance Film Festival s short film programming team in Adam started at Sundance as an intern with the Native Program in He is a graduate of the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts and most recently from California College of the Art's MBA program for Design Strategy. About Sundance Institute and what you are looking for: Following President and Founder Robert Redford s original vision, Sundance Institute has remained committed to supporting Native American artists throughout the history of the Institute. O'Bomsawin is a First Nations member of the Abenaki community of Odanak, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Communications from the University of Ottawa. For five years, he worked for the Canadian Museum of Civilizations, managing a training program for Aboriginal Peoples. Jean- François career started at APTN in the Marketing department as a Communications Coordinator, a position he held for over two years. Since July 2012, he assumed the role of Manager of Programming, Eastern Region. His management experience and understanding of Aboriginal perspectives are very beneficial to the development, evolution and commission of original programming. Jean- François has always dreamed of playing a significant role in the television industry, so his current position is a dream come true. She moved onto a career in broadcasting, working as a production executive for CHUM Television, CTV and Bell Media for 10 years. Specializing in documentary and factual programming, she oversaw successful documentaries such as Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould and Metal: A Headbanger`s Journey and series such as Star Portraits, Bathroom Divas, Ballet Girls and Stripsearch. Engel is currently Executive in Charge of Production for Firsthand, CBC s new documentary strand. Engel sits on the board of imaginenative. Previously, she sat on the Boards of DOC and Hot Docs. 6 Linda O Shaughnessy Manager of Acquisitions, Aboriginal Peoples Television Network Linda O Shaughnessy was raised in Baker Lake, Nunavut and Ottawa, Ontario, and brings over 23 years of broadcasting experience to APTN s Programming department. She studied at Algonquin College in the radio- television broadcasting program in Ottawa, and has been part of Canada s Aboriginal broadcasting industry since its beginnings in the North. Linda was part of the pre- launch of Television Northern Canada (TVNC) in Iqaluit, Nunavut, where she worked in scheduling and programming. Of note is that Linda was a panel member representing programming at TVNC s Canadian Radio- television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) license hearing for a national network. The CRTC issued a broadcasting license that launched what is now APTN. Since the start of the network, Linda continued to work in scheduling and programming at APTN s Yellowknife bureau. About Vision Maker Media and what you are looking for: At Vision Maker Media we create, promote, and distribute Native stories that represent the cultures, experiences and values of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Our work will integrate Native experience and wisdom into the broader public conversation and awareness about this country s past, present and future. With funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, we fund 6 to 10 projects annually at all stages of production. Citizens or legal residents of the U.S. are eligible to apply for funding. After finishing high school she spent a year abroad working in Vancouver. Sarah holds a Bachelor's degree in Communication and Cinema Studies from the Free University Berlin. She currently pursues a masters degree in Film and Media Studies at the Film University Babelsberg. Since 2011 she is working for interfilm International Short Film Festival Berlin as a curator and the Programme Coordinator & International Cooperations Manager. In 2014 she set up the inaugural ShortVisions International Short Film Festival Ningbo, China for interfilm Berlin, which successfully took place in September About interfilm International Short Film Festival Berlin and what you are looking for: interfilm International Short Film Festival Berlin has established itself as one of the most important short film festivals worldwide. This year's 31st festival edition will take place from Nov 10 to 15, More than 600 films selected from about 7000 submissions are presented at interfilm and its offspring children's festival 8th Kuki+TeenScreen, which is taking place at the same time. Juhani Alanen Executive Director, Tampere Film Festival Juhani Alanen studied at the University of Tampere and graduated as M.Sc. in Marketing. Juhani Alanen has been a member of the selection committee of Tampere Film Festival for 10 years. He is curating short film programs for Tampere Film Festival and Finnish short films programs for various film festivals. He has also been a member of the jury at different short film festivals. About Tampere Film Festival and what you are looking for: Tampere Film Festival is one of the most important short film festivals. The festival presents over 450 films in 120 screenings.
