Energy Management Systems with DIN EN The way to a continuous improvement of the energy efficient in the company Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus, Hannover Messe, April 2011 TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 1
Overview of topics 1. Motivations for energy savings in companies 2. Development of the Energy Management Systems 3. DIN and ISO 50001: the new ISO-family norms about Energy Management 4. Introduction of an Energy Management System: how can we help your company? TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 2
Motivations for energy savings I. Limited ressources and increasing energy demand from emerging countries: Improved energy efficiency reduces the dependence on imported energy and eases the financial burden on consumers, the economy and individual companies. Source: World Energy Outlook IEA TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 3
Motivations for energy savings II. Cost-benefit competition: Improved energy efficiency involves further benefits for companies: 1. Reduction in production costs (share of energy costs) 2. Longer service life of operational systems 3. Internal innovations 4. Competitive strength TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 4
Motivations for energy savings III. Environmental and legal concerns: Companies not only need to ensure long-term energy supplies at economical prices, but also to increase energy efficiency for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and conservation of resources. TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 5
Development of the Energy Management System What is an Energy Management System (EnMS)? All elements within an organisation that establish an energy policy and strategic energy goals, and the procedures and processes to achieve them. TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 6
Development of the Energy Management System An Energy Management System (EnMS) covers: All energy-relevant processes, activities and behaviour across all levels of an organisation Defined responsibilities in the organisational structure and integration of all organisational levels, from top management to machine operators Permanent development and realisation of saving s potential controlled by management Metering and data recording systems to collect energy consumption data An EnMS goes far beyond the mere recording and optimisation of energy-related data. TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 7

Energy Management System: Norms DIN EN Energy Management Systems Requirements with instructions for use The development of the standard was promoted by the EU. It came into force in July The structure is the same as DIN EN ISO (Environmental Management Systems). But the requirements needed to implement an Energy Management System go far beyond the specifications for energy mentioned in the ISO 14001* * An Environmental Management System compliant with EMAS covers the requirements for DIN TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 10
Energy Management System: Norms Draft of DIN ISO Energy Management System (EnMS) The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) initially developed its own parallel approach for an energy management system at the instigation of the USA and Brazil. Later, the ISO Project Committee PC 242 was created, which included representatives of DIN. Since June 2009, the draft of ISO has been in the discussion phase. The ISO norm is expected to take effect from the middle of Although the DIN EN and ISO are being developed in parallel, a common feature is that they will fit harmoniously into the landscape of the previous management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, etc.). This means that another foundation stone for integrated management has been laid. TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D. Alonso Craus / Hannover Messe 2011 / April 2011/ 11

Energy Management System: Norms The scope covers processes and activities across all levels of an organisation aimed at the continuous improvement of energy efficiency. 1.Establishing, implementing, documenting, communicating, reviewing and updating energy policy 2.Operational control (documents and activities) 3.Identifying and documenting energy aspects. Recording and measuring energy consumption depending on production data. Determining opportunities for energy saving 4.Defining, implementing and verifying quantifiable and measurable strategic and operational energy objectives at regular intervals within the scope of a documented energy management system 5.Defining the organisational structure with a dedicated energy manager as a member of management with other relevant responsibilities and authorities 6.Carrying out qualification of management and staff TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH Energy Management Systems / Dr. Maria D.
