6 LED Streetlighting How can light be controlled? Light loss via:... Transmission LED engineered luminaires have the advantage that the light can be controlled by a lens not a reflector. The light can therefore be directed more efficiently at the object or area in question. The optical lens is as a rule constructed of a clear glass PMMA (acrylic), which has an optical efficiency of around 98 %. If you compare reflector based optical systems with LED lens technology, an LED luminaire theoretically requires 25 % less lumens than conventional reflector engineered streetlighting. WE-EF

Multiple Spot There are two industry methods by which the optics of the LEDs can be utilized: The Multiple Spot option means aiming of the individual LEDs to realise the required distribution. Multiple Layer There are two industry methods by which the optics of the LEDs can be utilized: The Multiple Layer option has every LED distributing the light in exactly the same way; this secures the distribution of light for the life of the installation. WE-EF

12 LED Streetlighting Engineered LED Streetlighting Mechanical and Electrical Considerations LEDs are very heat sensitive and can only operate at optimal effiency within a particular temperature range. Thermal management is critical. WE-EF are developing and engineering streetlighting luminaires specifically designed for LEDs. Lighting Performance Currently clusters of LEDs are used to match a single conventional light source. A single luminaire with a cluster of LED s may draw more power than a single HID luminaire. However, due to significantly wider spacings and less maintenance with the LED installation, power overall is reduced. The energy, cost and environmental assessment must be based on the entire project. WE-EF

14 LED Streetlighting Engineered LED Streetlighting How is the Failure Rate and the Lumen Depreciation (Degradation) defined? WE-EF test and report in line with TM21 LM80-08 (see WE-EF Technical Information LED ) With what current are the LED s powered e.g. 350 ma, 700 ma or 1000 ma? This is important because a linear calculation comparing for example 700 ma with 350 ma is not possible. A change in current alters all the parameters. A complete new assessment must be made. WE-EF

Because of the assumption that we can compare HID lamps with LEDs directly, using the same criteria. The rules are different! What is the result? One can only compare projects with similar parameters. WE-EF

The lower the LED's thermal load, the lower the reduction in luminous flux. The diagram above illustrates the dependency of an LED's luminous flux on the operating duration and the average (outside) ambient temperature 25 C at an operating current of 700 ma. This diagram can be used to calculate the luminous flux that can be expected after a certain operating period. Control phases such as those that are, for example, used in networks using luminaires with two conventional lamps is required to activate the switch. One step dimming only is available. As standard, lumen output is reduced to 50 per cent. Intermediate values (e.g., 25 per cent) may also be optionally realised by agreement. WE-EF
29 LED Streetlighting Product Development (Eco Step Dim ) Eco Step Dim Motion A movement sensor is attached to the pole for controlling individual or groups of LED luminaires. Starting with a basic luminous flux (factory setting 55 per cent light output and 50% power), the luminous flux temporarily increases to 100 per cent when needed (factory setting: 5 minutes). It is always used in conjunction with luminaires from the modified Eco Step Dim Basic range. Sensitivity and switching times (minimum 1 minute maximum 15 minutes) may be easily adapted on site. 30 LED Streetlighting Product Development (Eco Step Dim ) Eco Step Dim Advanced A factory programmed Electronic Controller is fitted in the luminaire to reduce the luminous flux and power. The luminaires are operated in stand-alone mode, so no special supply and/or control cables are required. Up to five different dimming levels (D1-D5) may be individually and optionally specified for a maximum of five time periods (T1-T5). Set and programmed at the factory by agreement.
