1 The Electromagnetic Spectrum describe different types of electromagnetic radiation, including infrared, X-rays, ultraviolet, microwaves and radio waves compare properties of visible light to the properties of other types of electromagnetic radiation, including infrared, X-rays, ultraviolet, microwaves and radio waves Describe possible negative and positive effects of technologies associated with electromagnetic radiation Explain the importance of using the words frequency and wavelength correctly

2 Light is a form of radiant energy that you can see. However, the visible part that you can see is only a small part of the range of radiant energies.

3 What is radiant energy? Radiant energy is energy transferred or emitted as waves or rays in all directions.

4 What is a radiant? A radiant is energy that is sent out in the form of waves or rays.

5 Other radiant energies are microwaves, UV rays (ultraviolet radiation), infrared, radio waves and X rays. You cannot see these other radiant energies, but they are of the same kind as light. The whole range of radiant energies is called the electromagnetic spectrum.

6 What is radiation? Radiation is the heat transfer of radiant energy waves or rays such as light. wavelength corresponds to the energy of the light

7 Remember when we did Water Systems, we talked about waves? Energy can also be transmitted as a wave. Waves with short wavelengths have more energy, because more energy is needed to create them.

8 Radiation in Space Light can travel through space (obviously, that is how the sunlight reaches us) Can other parts of the magnetic spectrum travel through space as well? Yes Light and other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum can travel at very high speeds. In a vacuum, such as space, the speed is km/s. It takes light 1.3s to get from the Earth to the moon.

9 Waves, Energy and Light The parts of the electromagnetic spectrum have common properties such as high speed, and the ability to travel through a vacuum. They also have differences such as wavelength, frequency, and energy. See Figure 3 on page 298 and 299

11 Presentation In groups of 2, pick a common technology that makes use of electromagnetic radiation. Follow the rubric provided below. Examples of technologies are X-ray machines, microwaves, cell phones, nuclear industry, and more. Only 1 group present a topic, so you must tell me as soon as you know your topic!
