1 The North Carolina Scientist The Newsletter of the North Carolina Academy of Science, Inc. Spring 2004 PRESIDENT S LETTER The North Carolina Academy of Science has a long and distinguished history representing the sciences in North Carolina, but we cannot rest on the past record. The past few years have seen a decline in the membership and particularly a loss of support from several important sectors. I believe that we must purposefully work to gain anew the support of all those in the scientific community who were once vitally involved in the NCAS if we are to truly claim to represent the sciences in North Carolina. Attendance at any of our recent meetings reveals that we no longer have the level of representation that we once had in the physical sciences. There are probably a lot of reasons for this change, but I do believe that we still need and can serve the disciplines of the geosciences, physics, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and similar areas. Paper sessions at our meetings in these and some other disciplines have dwindled substantially from their historical levels or even ceased to exist. Reversing this trend and rebuilding participation from these disciplines are among our greatest challenges. Recent years have seen less interest in the Academy by faculty and graduate students from North Carolina s research universities and less support from the non-academic sector in general. Each one of the current members should make it a personal responsibility to help recruit members and participation from those universities and from non-academic interests and institutions. At the same time that we have seen less active involvement by senior scientists, both academic and non-academic, we have experienced exceptional growth in undergraduate participation. I think we should be especially proud of our success in providing an excellent venue for undergraduates to present their research. Our annual meeting has evolved into a showcase of the best work that is being accomplished by undergraduate students in the colleges and universities in North Carolina. I want every member to recognize and thank the individuals representing the Academy as officers, board members, and committee persons. These individuals unselfishly and diligently give of their time to conduct the work of the Academy. I am proud to serve with them. At the same time, I want to encourage others to volunteer their time and energy in service to the Academy. I can assure you that the experience will be personally rewarding. Please contact me or any other official of the Academy to convey your ideas and to join with us in helping to develop the future of the NCAS. There are a number of new initiatives that will require leadership and assistance. Members must be aware that most of our activities and announcements are now posted electronically via , rather than by postal mailings. I am humbled and honored to serve the North Carolina Academy of Science and its members as the new President. I will do my best to represent the Academy to the public and to oversee its internal affairs during 2004/2005. I am looking forward to an exciting year. Let s work together to have a great year! Michael J. Baranski President
