1 Leadership Education And Development Seminar LEADS What is it? LEADS is a two tier program (State Convention first with a winner attending LEADS at GFWC Convention) that helps up and coming leaders gain the capabilities, confidence, and commitment necessary to pursue and achieve higher office and serve with distinction. What topics are covered? Conflict resolution, mediation, public speaking/speech writing, time management and parliamentary procedure, among others. There is an explanation of GFWC resources, materials and assistance along with staff introductions and contact information. There is in depth discussion of GFWC policies and parliamentary procedure as well as frank question and answer sessions and tips and techniques for pursuing leadership opportunities. LEADS is not only perfect for your club work but also perfect for your helping in your profession! Who should apply for LEADS? Everyone! LEADS can be helpful for every clubwomen from new member to club President! Anyone who is interested in moving up in Federation leadership or honing their leadership skills is the perfect LEADS candidate. 2 GFWC-NC Leadership Education and Development Seminar (LEADS) GFWC initiated the Leadership Education and Development Seminar, LEADS, for the purpose of finding, training and encouraging clubwomen from the grassroots level to step up, pursue, and accept leadership opportunities at all levels of Federation. It is held on the day before the official opening of the GFWC Annual International Convention. GFWC-NC modeled a similar program for the districts. Districts may sponsor one member to represent them annually at the GFWC-NC Convention. Candidates will attend an all-day GFWC-NC LEADS on the day before or the first day of convention. Attendees will receive complimentary one-day s registration, lunch, dinner, and one-half night s accommodations at the convention hotel. District GFWC-NC LEADS candidates will be given the opportunity to learn about GFWC, GFWC-NC, as well as receive special training to share with her District. From the GFWC-NC group, one person will be chosen to represent North Carolina as the LEADS candidate at the GFWC Annual Convention. (For more information on the GFWC LEADS program, please see under Member Center/Leadership section.) Criteria for LEADS Participation It is highly recommended that each LEADS candidate meet the following criteria: Demonstrates leadership capabilities at the club level as an active club president, club officer, or club project or committee chairman. Exhibits a commitment to the Federation. Exhibits an understanding of the GFWC mission of community service, illustrated by programs and projects in which she is or has been involved. Demonstrates leadership skills, including, but not limited to, organization, responsibility, trustworthiness, enthusiasm, and flexibility. Exhibits an interest in and willingness to pursue higher leadership positions in GFWC-NC. Agrees to share information gained from participation in LEADS with others in the State/District. Understands and accepts potential expenses involved in participation. Has not held elected positions at or beyond the state level. (This criterion is recommended in order to encourage potential leaders at the club level to apply.) Has not attended a previous LEADS program. Members are eligible to attend only once. To apply for the GFWC-NC LEADS day of training forward the following to the District President by December 1st: 1) the completed application form (see next page) with 2) two letters of endorsement attached from active GFWC-NC club members. The district selection needs to be signed by the district president and in the hands of the GFWC-NC Presidentelect by February 1st. The candidate chosen for GFWC LEADS from the pool of district candidates will be forwarded to GFWC by March 1st.
