The Authorised Value Provider network raises the bar in sales, support and services for drives and motors across the UK, providing up-to-the-minute technical advice, rapid product delivery and a portfolio of life cycle services such as energy and productivity appraisals, installation, start-up and preventive maintenance. The Authorised Value Provider programme marks the growth of the already successful ABB channel network into a bigger, better, stronger one; a network that is designed to meet the rapidly changing requirements of global business by providing consistent access to ABB products and services. In this issue we take a closer look at some of the messages presented by members of the network during the launch event. Whether it s airports or water utilities, one thing is absolutely certain, there are legislations, regulations and directives affecting every single aspect of what we do. The Authorised Value Provider network is truly global. That means, should we be involved with an exporting or importing OEM, for instance, there is not a regulation or directive that our colleagues elsewhere in the world cannot help us with. Drilling down to the UK, the picture gets even more exciting. There are many authorities handling hundreds of regulations or directives. And it is our job to make sure that we are fully up to speed with any that affects a motordriven system: and believe me there are many! Take for example the EU MEPS. Although 1st January 2015 seems a long way off, it is a matter of months before IE3 motors become mandatory. Motors placed on the market after this date, with a rated output between kw, shall have a minimum efficiency class of IE3, or minimum IE2 if they are operated or equipped with electronic speed control, essentially a variable-speed drive (VSD). As Authorised Value Providers we understand what the changes mean if you are a manufacturer, distributor or a machine builder, and our aim is to offer best advice always. For instance, with constant torque applications, such as conveyors, there is no need to turn down the speed, and so fitting IE2 and a VSD is a waste of money as the VSD adds no value and just increases cost. If the equipment does not need a VSD, then don t use one. Furthermore, OEMs and machine builders should look at how the change will affect their logistics and supply chain and need to get advice from a reputable manufacturer to ensure they get what is right for them and their market. Daniel also spoke about: Manchester Airport One of Quantum Controls projects involved improving the efficiency of the air handling at Manchester Airport to cut energy use and CO 2 production. Using high efficiency motors and VSDs on 95 air handling units across all terminals, the airport is saving approximately 4,000 MWh and around 2,200 tons of CO 2 a year. 02 ABB energise 1 14

3 Packages are the future Shaun Sutton, Central Group. We recognise that the products we sell do not operate alone. A drive is no good without a motor. A motor is no good without a load, whether that be a pump, fan or compressor. As such it is becoming increasingly important for us, as ambassadors of ABB, to ensure that our customers are aware that we are here to advise on all aspects of the drive train. For example in a typical automation system, there are many products and components that hang off the industrial Ethernet backbone, and interestingly, ABB makes most of them. Over the years an increasing observation from customers is: I didn t know ABB did that. In fact there are over 100,000 different products in ABB s portfolio. And today customers are demanding all of these products and for one company to be able to link them altogether. A specific example of a package is the synchronous reluctance motor and drive package. There are over 100,000 different products in ABB s portfolio. It is a motor based on an innovative rotor design, offering high efficiency and high power output. Using synchronous reluctance technology, the motor is robust and has practically no losses. The motor is offered as a complete package together with a frequency converter and dedicated software. The rotor is a breakthrough in motor technology, an achievement that makes it possible to make motors that are much more efficient and smaller than conventional induction motors. The high efficiency package meets the most stringent efficiency level specified by the IEC; class IE4, super premium efficiency. For customers, this means 40 percent less energy losses than a conventional motor. The motor and drive package is designed specifically for variable-speed drive operation, leading to further energy savings. Thanks to these savings the payback time of this package is very short, in many cases less than two years. One of the first adopters of this technology was South Staffs Water. My colleague within the Authorised Value Provider network, Sentridge Shaun also spoke about: The Emirates Stadium For the home of Arsenal football club, the Emirates Stadium, Central Group installed drives and motors as part of the under-pitch aeration system, that promotes healthy turf and helps drain the soil. The air system can work in two directions. In the forward direction, it provides aeration through the gravel bed and through the root zone. The diversity of industries where drives are now required calls for a very special product. That is our all-new variable-speed drive, the ACS880. It can control virtually any process in any industry from utility and process to oil & gas, power plants, mining, metals, pulp & paper. In fact any application, such as basic and high performance constant torque through to crane, extruder, winch, winder, mixer and conveyor. It can control virtually any type of AC motor, from induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors, including servos. The ACS880 has a series of builtin safety functions which reduce the need for external safety components, simplifying the configuration and reducing installation space. It can also interface across all major fieldbus protocols as well as remote monitoring solutions. One of the most interesting and visual design features is the control panel, featuring an intuitive, high contrast and high-resolution control display enabling easy navigation. Many flexible data visualisations including bar charts, histograms, trend graphs help users to analyse processes, with assistants available to simplify set up. The menus and messages are customisable for specific terminology for applications. An integrated USB port also allows easy connection to the PC tool. The ACS880 is designed for maximum energy saving and productivity. The built-in energy calculators provide essential information including used and saved kwh and MWh, CO 2 reduction and money saved. These help the user fine tune processes to ensure optimum energy use. The base model was announced in Hannover some two years ago but was never released into the UK market as these early models were missing some essential functionality that we need in the UK. In fact, there will be many launches of the ACS880 as this product platform brings some 23 hardware variants across all types from single drives to multi-drives, air-cooled and liquid cooled. Blaise also spoke about: McDonald s restaurants Motor driven applications, like fans and pumps can be found everywhere including your local McDonald s restaurants. Some 50 McDonald s restaurants across the UK are now saving 50 percent on power bills for kitchen extractor fans with the help of ABB HVAC drives. Our solution used the drive s real-time clock. We made the fans run at full speed over the busy periods and at 80 percent speed at other times. Another major benefit was the reduced fan noise that this drive method allowed, particularly important to McDonald s at night. 04 ABB energise 1 14

5 Energy and productivity are the life blood of variable-speed drives Nick Brown, EDC (Scotland). There are typically six stages to the life cycle of any drive or motor: pre-purchase, order and delivery, installation and commissioning, operation and maintenance, retrofit and upgrade, replacement and recycling. Within each one of these life cycle stages, ABB and its Authorised Value Providers offer a range of specific services ranging from harmonics surveys, and start-up assistance to preventive maintenance programs. These multitude of services, that all Authorised Value Providers offer, have been packaged after years of design to provide the customer with unrivalled expertise. One service that ABB has made its own over the past decade is energy appraisals. You may have heard of the ABB Six Step Energy Saving Plan. Well that has been at the heart of ABB s market leadership for the past 10 years. But there is more to using a variablespeed drive (VSD) and electric motor than energy savings. A drive and motor also brings significant productivity improvements. For instance, at the Cardiff International White Water centre, drives control the pumps for different flow rates to be created depending on how challenging the water is required for the course. Meanwhile, John Baarda uses drives on tomato handling conveyors to give an average of 80 packs per minute compared to 60 packs per minute with mechanical systems. The Village Bakery saved 20,000 running costs on a new line due to the higher accuracy of the drive giving a 10 percent reduction in tin greasing agent, as more of the greasing agent ends up where it s supposed to. To capture these additional benefits, ABB and its Authorised Value Providers have launched the The Energy and Productivity Improvement Plan. The installation of an ABB standard drive on a dough mixer has helped to improve the quality of its products and reduced the amount of wastage that the old slip-ring motor gave and has also improved its ability to develop new products. Although the initial reason for the project was energy saving, it soon became clear that the drive gives a lot of other advantages that were more important. The major one is the flexibility to run at different speeds. There are a lot saving opportunities exist. In just half-a-day, the engineers are able to find applications and prove the potential for savings. Call us on ABB AVP ( ) of other ingredients in biscuits, such as fruit. Previously, the mixer might overmix, leading to staining where the fruit becomes a mush rather than remaining whole. This helps Fox s avoid the situation where a whole 400 kg batch of dough could be wasted. The ability of the drive to change the speed of the mixer also allows them to be more innovative. With the drive controlled mixer, they can experiment by using different speeds throughout the mix, from as low as two rpm to 50 or 60 rpm, depending on the recipe. ABB energise
