2 Adobe ID ectb utilizes Adobe "Adept" DRM, which means that you must have an "Adobe ID" in order to proceed. Navigate to Adobe Sign In page to begin. Select the "Don't have Adobe ID" link to create an account. Fill in the required information, and press the Create button at the bottom of the page. The My Adobe page should display. Adobe will request additional information that is optional. If you choose to fill it out, select the Continue button. Otherwise, select the "Skip this" link.

3 Windows PC You'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions in order to use ectb. Also, you will need an Adobe ID. Adobe Digital Editions has been loaded on all HarperCollins employee machines for your convenience. Open the EXE file. Navigate to Adobe's website in browser. Select the Windows download link. Select the desired components and select the Next button. Press the Install button. The status bar should fill to indicate completion. Press the Close button. Adobe Digital Editions will launch. Press Continue in the Setup Assistant screen.

4 Select Authorize Computer radio button. User should enter Adobe ID ( ), and then press Activate. Press Finished. Pre-existing titles on the computer should display in Adobe Digital Editions.

5 Macintosh You'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions in order to use ectb. Also, you will need an Adobe ID. Adobe Digital Editions has been loaded on all HarperCollins employee machines for your convenience. Open the DMG file. Navigate to Adobe's website in browser. Select the Macintosh download link. Press the Continue button. Press the I Agree button. Press the Close button. Adobe Digital Editions will launch. Press the Continue button in the Setup Assistant screen.

6 Select the Authorize Computer radio button. Enter your Adobe username and password information. Press the Activate button. Press the Finished button. Return to the download screen, and click the Download to this computer button. Pre-existing titles on the computer will display in Adobe Digital Editions.

7 iphone/ipad You'll need to install Bluefire Reader in order to use ectb. In addition, you will need an Adobe ID. Also, installing a QR Code reader is recommended. The screenshots below are from an iphone, however the process on an ipad is nearly identical. Ask the user to select the App Store icon on their phone's home screen to launch the store. Select the Search button. Search for Bluefire Reader and select the Install button. Select the Bluefire Reader icon and the authorize screen will display. Enter user Adobe account ID ( ) and password. The main library screen will display. Return to the App Store and search for "QR Scanner". Other apps also work but we recommend this one for its speed and simplicity.

8 Press the Install buttons and enter your password if prompted. Launch QR Scanner when installation completes. Press the Settings button. Select the Start on Scanner? and Auto Launch URLs? sliders in order to maximize speed. Now, press the Camera icon in order to scan your first code. Scan the QR code for a book on ectb. Bluefire Reader should launch and immediately download the book. Your book should be ready to read.

9 Android You'll need to install Bluefire Reader in order to use ectb. In addition, you will need an Adobe ID and a QR scanner application. Select the Google Play icon on your phone's homescreen to launch the store. Select the Search button. Search for Bluefire Reader and select the app. Select the Install button. Select Accept & Download button. The app will download. Press the Bluefire Reader icon from your homescreen. The application will launch.

10 Fill in your Adobe account username ( ) and password. Select the 'Don't have an Adobe ID? Forgot your username or password?' link if appropriate. Select the Authorize button. Adobe account is now enabled. User s account is now authorized. Select the Library button to view the pre-loaded ebooks. Launch Google Play. Select the Search icon and to query for "QR Scanner". Search for a QR scanner application. QR Droid is recommended but you can choose whichever QR scanner application you prefer. Select Install button.

11 Meanwhile, on your computer, navigate to ectb and download your ebook using the "QR Code for your smartphone or tablet" option. Select Accept & Download button. App will download. Select Open button to launch app. The scannable QR code will display. Scan the QR code with your phone. If you have various browsers, you may need to select one.

12 Select the "Download to Bluefire Reader" option. When the download is complete you will receive the this Download Complete popup message. Select the Read now option. Your ebook should display.

13 Nexus 7 You'll need to install Bluefire Reader in order to use ectb. In addition, you will need an Adobe ID. Select the " to your work address" option to download your desired ebook from ectb. You will receive an from noreply-ectb@harpercollins.com in your HarperCollins corporate inbox. You may also forward this to the account tied to your tablet or smartphone if your corporate is not set up on your smartphone or tablet. These instructions assume that the corporate mailbox has been set up. Select the work icon. Open the appropriate . Select the "Click Here" link. Select Download to Bluefire Reader.

14 Select Always. Bluefire Reader will launch and begin downloading your ebook. Select Read Now button. Downloaded ebook will load. Exit the reading screen to view that the ebook is available in your library.

15 Nook Simple Touch You'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions on either your Macintosh or Windows PC. Also, you will need an Adobe ID. Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. Plug in your Nook Tablet via USB to your computer. If this is the first time you have used this device on your computer with Adobe Digital Editions, you will receive the Device Setup Assistant pop-up screen. Press Authorize Device button. Press the Finished button. The Nook will display in the left pane of Adobe Digital Editions. Drag and drop the desired ebook file into the Nook. Press the Nook icon to view that the ebook has been copied. Eject your Nook.

16 Select the 'Nook' and verify that the ebook displays. Verify that your ebook is present under the Nook Library.

17 Nook Color You'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions on either your Macintosh or Windows PC. Also, you will need an Adobe ID. Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. Plug in your Nook via USB to your computer. If this is the first time you have used this device on your computer with Adobe Digital Editions, you will receive the Device Setup Assistant pop-up screen. Press Authorize Device button. Press the Finished button. The Nook will display in the left pane of Adobe Digital Editions. Drag and drop the desired ebook file into the Nook. Press the Nook icon to view that the ebook has been copied. Eject your Nook.

18 Navigate to the Library. Press the My Stuff button. Select the My Files folder. Select the Digital Editions folder. Select the appropriate ebook. The ebook will display.

19 Nook Tablet You'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions on either your Macintosh or Windows PC. Also, you will need an Adobe ID. Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. Plug in your Nook Tablet via USB to your computer. If this is the first time you have used this device on your computer with Adobe Digital Editions, you will receive the Device Setup Assistant pop-up screen. Press Authorize Device button. Press the Finished button. The Nook will display in the left pane of Adobe Digital Editions. Drag and drop the desired ebook file into the Nook. Press the Nook icon to view that the ebook has been copied. Eject your Nook.

20 From the Nook main screen, select the Books button. Select My Library. Select My Stuff. Select My Files. Select the Digital Editions folder. Select the desired ebook file.

21 The ebook will load. You can now access the ebook from the main screen.

22 Kindle Fire You'll need to install Bluefire Reader in order to use ectb. In addition, you will need an Adobe ID. Press the Settings button. Press the More... button. Scroll down and press the Device button. Toggle the Allow Installation of Applications button to "ON". A Warning pop-up screen will display. Press the OK button. Press the Home button.

23 Press the Web button. On your Kindle Fire, navigate to (the bluefire blog) to download the Bluefire Reader APK (the link is within the fifth bullet point). Select the "here" link and the download should start. Once the download is complete, press the Menu button and then press the Downloads button. The "BluefireReader.apk" should be visible. Select it. From the Do you want to install this application? screen, select the Install button. Install will start.

24 Press the Done button when you receive the "Application Installed" message. Press Home button. Verify that Bluefire Reader displays as one of your applications. Please note that this app will not automatically updated and you must revisit Bluefire Reader's website for updated versions. Navigate in the file directory of Kindle Fire to Bluefire > Imports. When prompted, select "Open to view files". Plug in your Kindle Fire via USB to your computer.

25 Download desired ebook from ectb to your computer. This will be an ASCM file. Locate the ASCM file and copy it. Paste ASCM file into Imports folder on your Kindle Fire. Press the Disconnect button on your Kindle Fire and remove the USB cord. Open Bluefire Reader on the Kindle Fire. Press the Menu button and then press the Upload Files on SD card button. The Kindle Fire will indicate that it is "Adding books to your Library". Verify that the ebook displays.

26 Sony E-Reader You'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions on either your Macintosh or Windows PC. Also, you will need an Adobe ID. Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. Connect your Sony reader via USB to your computer. If this is the first time you are connecting this device, the Device Setup Assistant will pop-up. Select the Authorize Device button. Select Finished button. Your Sony Reader should display in the left pane of Adobe Digital Editions. If it does not, your computer may be lacking appropriate drivers. If that is the case, install either the Sony Reader drivers for Mac OS or the Sony Reader drivers for Windows. Please note that your Sony reader's model number may be different than the one in the screenshot.

27 Download your desired ebook (ASCM file) by selecting the 'Download to this computer' option. Open the ASCM file. Adobe Digital Editions should launch. Drag and drop the file onto the Sony reader. Eject the Sony reader. Verify ebook is present on device by selecting Books by Title. Select desired ebook.

28 Select Continue Reading. ebook will load.

29 Other Devices ectb utilizes Adobe Adept DRM in order to protect HarperCollins' intellectual property. Most ereaders are compatible with this DRM by way of Adobe Digital Editions. The list of ADE compatible devices are found here. A notable exception to this general compatibility is the Amazon Kindle eink devices. These devices do not support Adobe Adept DRM and do not allow the installation of third party software such as the Bluefire Reader, leaving them incompatible with ectb. We are always looking for ways to support more devices. If you have a device that is not listed or have other questions about support, please contact the Emerging Technology Group (ETG) and we will see what we can do.

30 ectb Frequently Asked Questions Wow! How do I get started? First, you will need to create an Adobe account if you do not already have one. You may also need to install Adobe Digital Editions. In order to account for the variety of ereaders supported by ectb, we have provided detailed instructions with screenshots on the Help tab to walk you through the easiest option available. Why do employees only receive one title a week through ectb? To quote Andy Warhol, One s company, two s a crowd. We tend to agree. All joking aside, given our busy schedules, we feel that one title is enough reading material for a week s time. How come some HarperCollins titles notably Children s and newer titles are not available for download using ectb? HarperCollins titles that were specifically created as ebooks are available for download using ectb. Some children s titles, notably picture books, were not converted because it is much more vivid to see Max in his full wolf-like glory in Maurice Sendak s Where the Wild Things Are in physical format, don t you think? New titles may be slightly delayed but are added as soon as they are received. What devices are supported? ectb supports most ereaders with the exception of the Kindle e-ink devices since they use a non-standard Amazon DRM proprietary format. Detailed help screens have been provided for the iphone, ipad, Android, Kindle Fire, Sony, Nook Simple Touch, Nook Color, Nook Tablet, and Nexus 7. Do these files have DRM? Yes. This is our standard method of protecting the wonderfully crafted ideas of our fine authors. Why are there three different ways to download an ebook? Due to variations in device functionality, we have provided three different ways to choose from. What is the best/preferred method of download? We recommend the QR Code for your smartphone or tablet option. We feel that this is the simplest option because once you scan the QR code using a QR scanner application, Bluefire Reader will launch and import the ebook directly into your library. However, this option does not apply to certain ereaders. Can I read my one ebook on multiple devices? Yes. You can always navigate to the My Files screen within ectb to select the title and download it again. I noticed that my ebook is an ACSM file, not an EPUB. What is it? The file is an electronic publication with an Adobe DRM license. The acronym for this license is ACSM (Adobe Server Content Manager). In order to use Adobe licensed files, you must create an Adobe account from the Join Adobe site. You may also need to utilize Adobe Digital Editions, which has been conveniently loaded onto your computer. Can I use a different reader than Bluefire Reader? We strongly encourage using the Bluefire Reader application (available on ios and Android), since it supports the type of file we are using. The detailed instructions illustrate you use Bluefire Reader to read your ebook on several devices. You may experience some technical difficulties using a different reader application. I received the message: Access has been denied. Our apologies! ectb is available only to full-time employees. What s wrong? Currently, ectb is available to U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand HarperCollins employees (full-time) and U.K. HarperCollins employees (full-time and part-time). We are evaluating the timeline for rolling it out to Thomas

31 Nelson, Zondervan and other divisions. We will keep you posted. As this is an employee perk, ectb is not available to contract employees. Can I share my ebook? No. Books are HarperCollins most important intellectual asset. As employees, please do your part in protecting them from piracy. I received an error. What do I do? There are a couple different reasons why you may have received an error. Please go through the following questions: o Did you link your Bluefire Reader to your Adobe account? o Did you download Bluefire Reader on your device? o Do you have a QR scanner application? o Is the Adobe account linked to your Adobe Digital Editions the same as the one associated to your device? o o Did you activate more than 6 devices to your Adobe account? Android devices: Did you try to download and select another browser (e.g. Opera) to open the QR code or URL link? I received the message Did you know that your Internet Explorer is out of date and/or Partially Supported Browser. What does this mean? Users who are using Internet Explorer version 8 and version 9 will see this message. This is only a warning. These older browsers are supported, but will operate more slowly, with visual compromises, and with limited back button functionality. We highly recommend using Chrome 15+, Firefox 10+, Safari 5.1+ or Internet Explorer 10+. Do I need to use my HarperCollins address as my Adobe username? No, you do not have to. If you already have an Adobe ID tied to your Adobe Digital Editions, you should continue use of that one on all devices. You can determine the ID your Adobe Digital Editions is tied to by checking under Authorize Computer. If you use unique Adobe IDs on different devices, you may run into issues. Why are some formats of same title sometimes listed separately? This is related to metadata inconsistencies for a particular title. HarperCollins has undertaken various efforts to improve the quality of our metadata. Can I search for a title by ISBN? Yes. You can input the title s ISBN into the search bar. How do I determine if the title I am downloading is a US or UK title? There is a flag indicated at top right of the title page to indicate which version you are accessing. There are a few instances where the title is sold in various locales. The flags of these various locales will expand when your mouse passes over them.
