1 Intro to the Garmin GPSmap 76S and Basic Functionality Many of today s personal handheld GPS units include functionality ranging from trip computers, games, calculators, hunting and fishing calendars and stop watches, among many others. All, however, will perform the basic function for which they were originally intended, that of being able to determine your location on the face of the earth. While the buttons and procedures may vary from unit to unit, all units will in some form or fashion allow you to perform the two main functions listed below. Two Main Functions 1. Save a Waypoint for a Desired Location a. In order to return or navigate back to it b. In order to display its location on a map 2. Manually Enter a Known Waypoints Location a. In order to navigate to it Three basic types of information collected or defined: Waypoint = the location of a point, you can either define or navigate to a waypoint Route = a path consisting of intermediate stops (defined by a collection of waypoints) Track = defines your path of travel, is being collected while the unit is on Becoming Familiar with the Garmin GPSmap 76S Turning Unit On and Off (Garmin GPSmap 76S) The on/off switch is the button with the red light bulb on it. Pressing and holding the button in for a few seconds turns the unit on. Press the PAGE button two times to access the GPS Information Page. The unit is turned off by pressing and holding the on/off switch for a few seconds. Page Options Six main pages are accessed and cycled through by using the PAGE button. The initial page displayed is the GPS Information Page. Pressing the PAGE button will scroll you through a set of five additional page displays that are available. The Page illustrations and a brief description are provided below:

2 GPS Information Page Map Page Compass Page Highway Page Active Route Page Plot Page GPS Information Page: Displays satellite location and signal strength, current time, date and location. Also displays receiver status and several data fields. Map Page: Displays positional information on a map. Options and capabilities are numerous. Compass Page: Displays the electronic compass and data fields. Best used for navigation when a straight-line course can not be followed. Highway Page: Similar to Map Page. Best used for navigation when a straight-line course can be followed. Active Route/Goto Page: Displays waypoints currently being used for navigation. Plot Page: Displays data provided by the altimeter (i.e. elevation or barometric pressure). Each of the six main pages has it s own Menu that will display additional features/options for that page. The Menu for a Page can be accessed by pressing the MENU button.

3 Setup Most handheld GPS receivers will have a Setup Menu which allows you to pre-set some of the preferences for the unit. Follow the instructions below to access the Setup Menu and set the preferences as shown. Press the MENU button twice Use the rocker button (large button in the center of the unit) to select Setup and then press ENTER. Press ENTER to change a setting then scroll to the setting you want. Then press ENTER to select it. Pressing the QUIT button repeatedly will return you to the next higher menu in the hierarchy. General Tab Mode = Normal WASS = Enabled Backlight Timeout = 2 minutes Beeper = Key and Message Language = English Altimeter Tab Altimeter Auto Calibration = On Pressure Units = Millibars Barometer Mode = Variable Elevation Compass Tab Compass = On Heading Data Source Use GPS If Speed is Above = 10mph Use Compass If Below 10mph for at Least = 1.5 minutes Time Tab Time Format = 12 Hour Time Zone = Central Daylight Savings Time = Auto Current Date = leave blank or as is Current Time = leave blank or as is Units Tab Elevation = Feet Vertical Speed = ft/min Distance and Speed = Statute Depth = Feet Temperature = Fahrenheit Direction Display = Numeric Degrees Speed Filter = Auto Location Tab Location Format = hdddºmm.mmm' Map Datum = WGS 84 North Reference = True Alarms Tab All Fields = Off, except Approach and Arrived = Auto

4 Interface Tab Garmin Saving the Waypoint of a Desired Location 1. Hold the unit so that the top of the unit points overhead to the sky. 2. When the GPS Information Page shows a steady position reading (at the bottom), press and hold the ENTER (MARK) button until the Mark Waypoint page appears. 3. If you would like to edit the waypoints default id/name follow the instructions in item #2 below. 4. Use the rocker button to scroll to the OK field. Once the OK field is highlighted, press the ENTER button to save the information you have entered for the waypoint. Manually Entering and Editing a Waypoints Location 1. Press and hold the ENTER (MARK) button until the Mark Waypoint page appears. 2. Edit the Waypoint ID or Name: Use the rocker button to scroll up or down to highlight the top line of the screen which is the default id/name assigned to the waypoint by the receiver. Press the ENTER button to enter editing mode. The first character in the default name will be highlighted. Press up or down on the rocker button to obtain the desired letter/number for the first character. Use the rocker button to scroll right to the next letter, then up/down to obtain the desired letter. Repeat this process until you have given the waypoint the desired id/name. Once you have the desired name press the ENTER key to stop editing. 3. Edit the Waypoints Location: Use the rocker button to scroll down to highlight the Location field. Press the ENTER button to enter editing mode. The first character in the latitude will be highlighted. Use the same process you used to edit the id/name field to edit the characters in the latitude and longitude. Keep scrolling right and the cursor will automatically go from the latitude to the longitude.

5 Once you have the desired location entered, press the ENTER key to stop editing. 4. Save the Waypoint: Use the rocker button to scroll to the OK field. Once the OK field is highlighted, press the ENTER button to save the information you have entered for the waypoint. Navigating to a Waypoint 1. Press the NAV button 2. Use the rocker button to highlight Go To Point and press ENTER 3. Use the rocker button to highlight Waypoints and press ENTER 4. When the Waypoints by Name page appears, press ENTER to drop the cursor down to the list of waypoints. 5. Use the rocker button to select the waypoint to navigate to then press ENTER. 6. On the Waypoint information page, with Goto highlighted, press ENTER 7. The Compass Page will appear and you can begin navigation. The compass ring is a graphic display of your current heading. As you change direction, the Compass Ring will rotate, your current heading will always be at the top of the compass. The pointer will always point toward the active waypoint. When you are going directly toward the waypoint, the pointer will align with the vertical line at the top of the Compass Ring. The unit must be held level, otherwise the readings may be inaccurate. When you arrive at the waypoint, a message "Arriving at Destination" will be displayed. Calibrate the Electronic Compass 1. Press the PAGE button until the Compass Page is displayed. 2. Press the MENU button then use the rocker button to select Calibrate Compass. Press the ENTER button, read the directions on the screen, then with Start highlighted at the bottom of the screen, press the ENTER button to start the calibration process. Be sure to hold the compass level. 3. When the successful calibration message appears, with OK highlighted at the bottom of the screen, press the ENTER button when finished to return to the Compass Page.
