4 GENERAL BACKGROUND Chongqing was separated from Sichuan province in 1997 and was appointed as China s fourth municipality preceded by Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. It is the largest direct-controlled municipality in China reporting directly to the central government. Largest industrial and commercial city of Western China Fastest growing area in China on 2011 with a GDP growth of 16.5%, 13.6% in 2012 and 12.3% in The size of Chongqing is 12 times that of Shanghai and its population is 6 million more than Shanghai s. The vast majority of Chongqing area is still rural. In 2012, Chongqing s urban population only accounted for 56.9% of its total population, while the percentage was 89% in Shanghai. INDUSTRIES Chongqing is one of the old industrial bases of China and major trading inland port transporting goods from the southwestern provinces to eastern China. Chongqing is China s third biggest automotive manufacturer and produces 25% of laptops worldwide. One of the nine largest iron and steel centres in China and Asia s largest aluminum producer. In recent years, Chongqing s electronics and related industries grew strongly. In 2012, the gross output of telecommunication equipment, computers and other electronic equipment industries grew by 89.9%. Products manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Foxconn and Inventec put up plants in Chongqing. The Chuandong Natural Gas Field in Chongqing is China s largest inland production base of natural gas, with deposits of 270 billion, accounting for more than one-fifth of China s total. In 2012, Chongqing received 2.24 million overseas tourists (+20.3%) and 288 million domestic tourists (+31%), bringing foreign exchange revenue of US$1.17 billion (+20.7%) and Rmb158 billion (+30.8%) respectively. With an urbanization rate of 57%, large parts of Chongqing s territory are still rural. Farmland area amounts to 2,5million ha. Farming (60%), forestry, animal husbandry (32%) and fishery together generate 66,21billion RMB. Chongqing is an important production base of oranges and pork. Other focus areas include: silk, herbal medicine, and forestry and bamboo timber processing. Important industries in Chongqing include mining, textiles, pharmaceutical, construction, paper manufacturing, shipbuilding and other creative industries. FOREIGN TRADE The leading export market was the US in 2012 which accounted for 21% of Chongqing s total exports. Other major export markets included Germany and the Netherlands. Major exports included mechanical and electrical products, motorcycles, and motor vehicles (including parts) and other high-tech products. In 2012, major sources of imports included Malaysia, Japan and the US. Major imports included mechanical and electrical products, high-tech products and parts of motor vehicles. 2012, Chongqing exported US$988 million (+285%) to Hong Kong. Total trade between Chongqing and Hong Kong in 2012 grew by 280%. 14

6 SENIOR LIVING Chongqing operates with a plan, which means that 90% of the elderly will be cared for in their homes, 6% in small community care centres and 4% (approx. 200,000 seniors) will be cared for in private and public institutional care homes. Currently, the municipality has a shortage of 90,000 senior beds and the fraction of people over 60 years will increase from 16.5% to 19% from Chongqing has decided to raise the per capita monthly pension for retired corporate employees by 90 yuan, benefiting at least 2.43 million elderly people. The new rule took effect on January 1, Pensions for corporate retirees with the professional qualification of senior engineer as well as the people aged above 60 would be further increased. Per capita monthly pensions for the urban residents who are over the maximum age limit prescribed for pension and those rural residents who have moved their household registrations to urban areas due to land expropriation would be increased by 35 yuan. SENIOR LIVING DEVELOPMENTS Tangfang Community (Bishan District) The nursing home includes two lounges, one recreation room and a small supermarket. The home contains more than a dozen beds as well as a number of on-site services and sport facilities such as ping-pong tables and a basketball court. 16

It will be operating on sale model but the unit must be sold back to M Health upon death. The development also includes aged care hotel where senior accommodation and services are available on a short-term basis. The overall development is expected to be completed in 5 years and will be built in three phases. Senior housing on Phase 1, Hospital in Phase 2. Private Rehabilitation Center Danish company is building a in Chongqing to provide 300 old persons with nursing services. Community Senior Care Centre (Longzhouwan) Located in Yanlong Shanshuicheng 3-storey building covering over 1,300 square metres, comprising of a canteen, senior accommodation, recreation area, game room and other service areas. It will offer 24-hour nursing service for elderly and day-time service for those seniors who will return home or be picked up in the evening. 17

8 BEIBEI GENERAL BACKGROUND Beibei is one of the districts of Chongqing city and part of the Chongqing Economic Circle Region, Liangjiang New Area. It is located near Jinyun Mountain and Jialing River that covers an area of 755 square kilometers. It is located 24 km away from Chongqing municipal government offices and 26 km from Jiangbei International Airport It also boasts a convenient transportation system including easy access to railway lines and expressways. Beibei s industry is focused on machinery manufacturing, production of automobiles and motorcycle parts, software development, electronics, instrumentation, other high-tech industries as well as biopharmaceutical industry. Beibei s beautiful ecological environment, rivers and mountains drives the Leisure and Hospitality and Tourism Industry.
