2 Evaluation: Class Participation and Attendance 5% Summary of the Saskatchewan Human Rights 5% Code including implications for employers and benefits for employees Mock Job Interview Guide including brief job 10% description of the position being interviewed and summary of learnings from conducting the mock interview with a classmate Midterm Chapters % Team Presentations (Various dates) 15% Final Exam (Comprehensive) and 40% 033: December 17, 2015, 7:00 10:00 p.m., location TBD Total: 100% Instructional Methods: During many of the classes, we will spend time in group and/or class discussion and/or working in groups on an HR-related in-class application of the relevant content. This will usually require using the textbook and other assigned readings as a foundation. Your learning and interest will be greatly enhanced by completing the required readings in advance of class and keeping current with business news. It will also be helpful to bring your textbook (and readings) with you. Other Expectations: -You will need into URCourses regularly to check for s and announcements and to retrieve class materials. -Class attendance is mandatory and essential. Lectures are designed to supplement the text material with an emphasis on application and professional practice. Every class member is critical to our collective learning outcomes, therefore missing class impacts everyone. If you miss a class, it is up to you to get notes, assigned activities, etc. from another participant in the class. An excessive number of class absences may result in administrative follow-up, which could ultimately include being denied the opportunity to write the final exam. -You are expected to arrive on time and not disturb the class by leaving early. -The only permissible devices for use in class are laptops and tablets. Research Participation: Up to 2% bonus marks can be earned by participating in ongoing research studies in the Faculty of Business Administration. Additional information about research participation will be posted to UR Courses. Assignments: Assignment #1 Summary and Review/Implications of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code For this assignment, you are required to provide a brief summary of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, found at the following link: and outline the implications and responsibilities for employers in Saskatchewan as well as the benefits for job seekers and employees. This summary should be no more than 3 pages in length, double 2

3 spaced. A marking grid will be posted online, outlining more specific expectations. You are required to work individually on this assignment. Assignment #2 Brief Job Description, Interview Guide, Summary of Mock Interview with Classmate Assignment #2 requires 1 classmate to work on the assignment with you and you will take turns interviewing each other with the interview guide you ve created. If there are an uneven number of students registered in the course, there may be a group of 3 required to complete the assignment. Based on the job description that you create (no more than 1 page double spaced), you will create an interview guide that will be used to hire for the position that you ve created. Your guide should be between 10 and 15 questions, and the questions should be a blend of knowledge related questions specifically related to the position and behavioral questions based on the competencies required to fulfil the role. You will then meet with your partner and conduct the interview, taking notes in the interview guide. Once you ve completed this component of the assignment, you ll be required to summarize the experience of creating the job description, mirroring the interview guide to the role you re hiring for, and interviewing the candidate (your classmate). This summary should be no more than 2 pages double spaced and should include course concepts from the text book. A marking grid will be posted online outlining more detailed, specific expectations. Mid-Term Exam: (25 marks) Based on the readings in the textbook, assigned readings, videos, class lectures, in-class discussions, and any other class discussions and activities. NOTE: If you miss the Mid-Term Exam for any reason, marks will be weighted to the comprehensive Final Exam. Team Presentation (10 Marks) + Paper (5 Marks): (15 Marks) The team project is to prepare for and conduct an in-class moderated discussion of one of the available topics. You are required to conduct research, using journals and other publications e.g. newspapers, available from the U of R s e-library and provide a thorough, thought-provoking, and dynamic perspective of both sides of the HR issue raised. You will also be required to submit a brief accompanying paper (not to exceed 5 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. Arial font (or equivalent) that includes a detailed set of appropriately cited references. This paper will be due (hard copy handed in at the start of class) on the class following your presentation (one week later). Project Group Reporting: Each team must maintain a log of all group activities (including attendance at meetings and team member follow-through on commitments) for my review upon request. It will also be attached to your team paper. All team members will receive the same grade. (Exception: Consistent, problematic notes regarding a team member s participation will result in a grade reduction of a minimum of 5 marks. This approach will involve first bringing it to the attention of your teammates to provide them an opportunity for improved contributions). Note: Additional details including sample topics will be discussed in class and posted on UR Courses along with the specific grading criteria for this assignment. Final Exam: (40 marks) Based on the readings in the textbook, assigned readings, videos, class lectures, exercises, case studies, and/or discussions and team presentations. The final exam will be comprehensive (Chapters 1-11) and format for the final exam will be discussed in class. Note Examination Policy: Anyone absent for the final exam will be given a grade of NP in the class. BUS and 033 December 17, :00 p.m 10:00 p.m. Location: TBD 3
