1 COURSE STRUCTURE AND PURPOSE: Human Anatomy & Physiology 1 is an intensive and immersive collegiate course organized into 4 learning periods delivered across 29 days. Each learning period is composed of 2 face-to-face lecture sessions, 2 face-to-face laboratory sessions, and a minimum of 15 hours of self-paced, web and text-based learning activities. The purpose of this course is to provide the participant formal experiences that generate a set of learning outcomes described on Page 2 of this Syllabus. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to convey the structure and function of the human body and mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis within it from modern evidence-based anatomical and physiological perspectives. Topics include the study of cells, tissues, integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. Emphasis is placed on the integration of systems as they relate to normal health. Laboratory exercises provide first-hand experience with the study of these structures and processes. MEETING TIMES: Please keep in mind that your attendance is required (see below our attendance guideline) when face-to-face classes are held. The course meets for 4 consecutive weekends from 8:30am to 6:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. On the first day of class, your instructor will inform you when breaks will be scheduled. When Lecture is held in the morning, please observe the following course schedule: 8:30am 1:30pm Lecture 2:10pm 6:30pm Laboratory When Laboratory is held in the morning, please observe the following course schedule: 8:30am 12:50pm Laboratory 1:30pm 6:30pm Lecture Exam 2 takes place on the Wednesday after the last weekend of class, starting at 6:30 pm and ending 8:00pm. 2 COURSE EXPECTATIONS AND OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to be a participatory endeavor between you, your colleagues, and your instructors during lecture and lab with learning as the ultimate goal. We encourage and expect you to take responsibility for your learning, bringing your life and professional experiences and prior knowledge into play in an interactive manner. To help you fulfill this requirement, try adopting a growth mindset that involves learning for the sake of learning and personal enrichment rather than learning exclusively for the test or for a desired letter-grade in the course. Attend all lecture and laboratory sessions, be punctual, interact with your colleagues, be curious by asking questions, and provide real-life examples of your experiences related to what is being discussed. Plan to devote a minimum of 15 hours each week outside of class on our web-based platform. Use this time to exchange information among your classmates in the student forums provided. The web-based platform includes several practice quizzes and exercises designed to maximize learning. Keep in mind that meaningful learning extends beyond mere memorization and involves developing the capacity to describe and predict phenomena. Successful participation in all aspects of this course is expected to result in a capacity to: 1. Describe the general anatomy & physiology of cells and predict physiological consequences of a given cellular dysfunction. 2. Describe the structure, function, development, maintenance, and location of major tissues in the human body, and predict the physiological consequences of a given tissue dysfunction. 3. Describe the general anatomy & physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the integumentary system and predict physiological consequences of integumentary system dysfunction. 4. Describe the general anatomy & physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the skeletal system and predict physiological consequences of a given skeletal system dysfunction. 5. Describe the general anatomy & physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the muscular system and predict physiological consequences of muscular system dysfunction. 6. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the Nervous System and predict the physiological consequences of nervous system dysfunction. 7. Describe the general anatomical and physiological bases of everyday human sensations (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting), and predict what kinds of organismal disabilities would emerge if a given sense organ fails to perform normally. 8. Describe the general anatomy and physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the endocrine system, and predict physiological behaviors based on knowledge of endocrine signaling and regulation. 9. Utilize modern tools of anatomy and physiology in an integrative manner to produce and disseminate scientific information about the human body that may contribute to therapies for contemporary major human disease(s). 2

Survey of human disorders related to these systems. 5 General anatomy & physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the muscular and nervous systems. General anatomy & physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the muscular and nervous systems (continued). 6 Survey of human disorders related to these systems. 7 General anatomical and physiological bases of everyday human sensations, including olfaction, hearing, and seeing. General anatomy and physiology of the cells, tissues, and organs that compose the endocrine system. 8 Survey of sense organ and endocrine disorders. 4 ABSENTEEISM: Keep in mind that this is a face-to-face course. It is not a hybrid or distance learning course, and as such your attendance is expected during all lecture and laboratory sessions. In order to obtain the full number of credits for this course, you must be present in the classroom/laboratory a minimum of 90% of the time. Most importantly, you must sign the attendance sheet or register your presence electronically during each session for both lecture and laboratory this is the only acceptable way to prove attendance! On the other hand, there are some situations that can be recognized as excused absences (such as a student s serious illness or a death in the student s immediate family), as long as they are properly documented. COURSE WITHDRAWAL: You are entitled to cancel enrollment on the course with no financial responsibility (with full refund, except for the non-refundable application and registration fees) if you fill-out an online drop request by the Friday before the second weekend of instruction You can withdrawal from the course at any time and may be entitled to a partial refund. QUIZZES/TESTS/EXAMS GENERAL GUIDELINES: Please make sure you are in class at least 15 minutes before the start of the quiz, test, or exam. If you are late, you will be granted admission to the room provided nobody has finished the quiz/test/exam and left the room; however, if you do arrive late then you will NOT be granted extra time to complete the quiz, test, or exam in question, and the scheduled assessment ending time will stand. It is expected that you abide by the highest standards of honesty and integrity in the performance of academic assignments, quizzes, tests, and exams, avoiding academic dishonesty in all of its forms, including cheating and plagiarism. Should a cheating or plagiarism incident occur, the instructor in charge of the course has the authority to determine the penalty to be applied ranging from taking points off to failing the student for that assignment, quiz, test, or exam.
