4 OVERVIEW Nurses are the cornerstone of the nation s health care industry. They represent a profession that remains in very high demand. They not only provide care and comfort to those they serve, but are also role models for good health. The nursing profession is one that predates most, and the fields of specialization are evolving everyday as the health and medical environment becomes more diverse, increasingly extending the role of nurses beyond the traditional hospital setting. Nurses are an integral part of health care teams, institutions, and systems, and at The College of The Bahamas we are preparing professionals to meet the growing demands of this very important vocation. Students meeting the requirements for entry into the nursing degree programme are eligible for Bahamas Government sponsored grants. These grants cover tuition expenses and a monthly stipend for books and other college expenses. Upon graduation, grant recipients are bonded to public service employment for a specified period.

6 OUR PROGRAMMES The School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions (SNAHP) offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, certificate and diploma programmes through its departments of Nursing and Allied Health/ Continuing Education. The School, in continued partnership with the Ministry of Health, Public Hospitals Authority and relevant professional councils, ensures that education and training programmes reflect the country s national health care needs. Programmes include: BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN) REGISTERED NURSE - BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (RN-BSN) BACHLOR OF PHARMACY (BPHARM) POST BASIC NURSING DIPLOMAS Community Nursing Midwifery Critical Care Nursing CERTIFICATE Trained Clinical Nursing BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN) A strong background in science, mathematics, and communication is needed to succeed in nursing. Nursing candidates are prepared by a rigorous course of training that includes a thorough grounding in anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. The BSN programme includes theoretical and clinical components, and offers training and specialised study in adult, community, maternal-child, paediatric, psychiatric and critical care nursing areas. The first year of study comprises only general education courses which are taken at The College s Oakes Field Campus. Course study in subsequent years is concentrated in the major area. These are taken at The College s Grosvenor Close Campus, adjacent to The Princess Margaret Hospital.

8 BACHELOR OF PHARMACY DEGREE (BPharm) Offered in conjunction with the University of Technology in Jamaica, this degree provides the student with the core knowledge, skills and professional competencies to become practitioners in pharmaceutical care. Areas of study include, compounding, dispensing, sale of drugs, monitoring drug therapy and advising on therapeutic values, content and hazards of drugs and devices, and identification and assessment in resolving drug problems. POST BASIC DIPLOMAS Post Basic Diploma programmes are designed for the nursing practitioner who wishes to develop advanced practice skills in a specific area of specialisation. The College offers three such programmes: Community Nursing, Midwifery and Critical Care Nursing. Community Nursing Students in this programme are trained to manage the comprehensive care of individuals, families and groups in community settings. Midwifery Students in this programme are trained in maternal and child health, primary health care and the counselling needs of the pregnant woman and family. They learn the skills necessary for the overall management of the pregnant woman. Critical Care Nursing Students in this programme are trained to coordinate care in emergency rooms, trauma and critical

10 care facilities. Special emphasis is placed on the delivery of highly specialised care in a safe and effective manner, under critical conditions. CERTIFICATES Certificate programmes are designed for persons wishing to upgrade their skills in the related fields. The College offers three such programmes: Trained Clinical Nursing, Environmental Health and Pharmacy. Trained Clinical Nursing This is a 15-month programme designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist the Registered Nurse and other health care professionals in the delivery of optimum patient care. Students are introduced to the concepts and principles of health and nursing care through the presentation of nursing theory, biological, social and related sciences essential for attending to the basic health care needs of clients. Environmental Health This is a 2-year programme designed to provide students with the knowledge and technical skills necessary to carry out responsibilities in agencies concerned with environmental quality. The programme covers a range of public service environmental issues.

12 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME All degree programmes have a general education component comprising nine areas: literacy, numeracy, foreign language, humanities, social science, natural science, health and nutrition, computer literacy and student development. While courses in your major would provide you with disciplinary, technical and procedural knowledge, the General Education Programme is designed to graduate students who demonstrate critical, reflective and creative thought and who are able to convey those thoughts articulately and confidently in written and oral form.

College of The Bahamas students have studied at institutions in both English and non-english speaking countries as far away as in Europe and closer to home in the Latin-American and Caribbean region, the United States and Canada. 16 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES An undergraduate degree in Nursing will provide students with the foundation necessary for a rewarding career. There are also opportunities for graduate studies in the field of nursing, a related medical discipline, or students may avail themselves of a range of specialist nursing opportunities. Ambulatory care, critical care, home health care, occupational health and psychiatry are examples of the many areas of specialisation available to nursing professionals.

18 ALUMNI REFLECTIONS Attending The College of The Bahamas School of Nursing & Allied Health Professions was a very rewarding experience. The professors were always well prepared and provided informative practical sessions. I don t think it s by mistake that I feel competent to face the real life scenarios in the hospital. The programme is scientifically based, culturally relevant and assisted greatly to enhance my critical thinking skills, knowledge and attitudes that are needed to impact students learning.
