Department: Family and Community Medicine Program type: Master degree Program name: Master of Public Health, MPH (Epidemiology/Occupational Health and Safety/Health Care Management Introduction: With the emergence of chronic preventable diseases such as: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancer and other diseases associated with lifestyles, there is a great need for professional training in public health in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Welltrained leaders and decision makers who can plan, implement, evaluate and supervise public health services and programs are in demand throughout the Kingdom. UD s Master of Public Health program is a professional public health training program that is based on science, knowledge and evidence. The Department of Family and Community Medicine of the College of Medicine, at the University of Dammam has an extensive history in postgraduate training and in the area of research with regards to the public heath challenges in the Kingdom. The Master of Public Health program at UD was established in order to address the following issues: 1. There is a dire need for specialists in the field of public health to in order to meet the community s health care needs and services in the Kingdom. 2. There is a shortage of trained professionals in the fields of epidemiology, health management and occupational health and safety. 3. The Ministry of Health and other health related entities in the Kingdom, such as the Ministry of Defense, the National Guard are continually looking for trained professionals in the fields of epidemiology, health management and occupational health. This demand has only increased with the current trend towards prevention and control of diseases and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. 4. Universities, medical schools and colleges of applied medical sciences are also continually looking for qualified lecturers who are specialized in community medicine and public health. 5. There is a dire need for specialists in the discipline of epidemiology. These specialists are required in order to conduct studies and investigations that are required for controlling epidemics and communicable diseases throughout the Kingdom.!1

2 . There is also a need for specialists in health management, who can plan, implement and evaluate health care programs. 7. Occupational health professionals are in demand as well. These specialists are responsible for promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing occupational hazards and diseases for anyone working in the Kingdom, paying special attention to the industrial sector. Admission requirements: 1. Admission into the program will be according to the unified rules and regulations set forth in the Higher Studies in Saudi Universities. 2. All graduates with bachelor degrees in health care related specialties are eligible to apply to the program provided their grades are not less than Good. 3. All applicants are required to pass an admission examination, which may contain oral/written examinations, after paying a nonrefundable fee of SR All nonphysician applicants are required to have passed the TOEFL with a score of at least 500 or the IELTS with a score of at least 5. Program duration: Two academic years (minimum for fulltime candidates) Program system: The MPH program has two streams. A candidate can select any one he/she likes to study. They are: 1.
