3 BECOMING A PHARMACIST AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, BALTIMORE The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy provides future generations of pharmacists with the knowledge and skills needed to be essential contributors to a dynamic health care arena. Students at the School of Pharmacy have a unique opportunity to learn in an interdisciplinary health care environment. The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is a part of the State of Maryland s only public academic health, human services, and law center. Students and faculty from the Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and the Graduate School have the opportunity to learn together in a variety of interprofessional educational experiences designed to ultimately improve the safety and quality of patient care. Based on campuses in Baltimore and at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md., the PharmD program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy combines basic and applied science as well as an in-depth therapeutics course of study. We are committed to providing superior education to professional and graduate students through a comprehensive program that integrates science and therapeutics, designed to develop outstanding pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Students are taught by faculty who are progressive pharmacy practitioners and nationally renowned scientists, who have a commitment to direct patient care, and who are models of professionalism and leadership. In our innovative educational, research, and practical settings, students gain the knowledge and skills to excel in a variety of pharmacy careers. Employing a spirit of discovery fostered during the course of their studies, our graduates are leaders wherever they practice, conduct research, or teach. pharmacy.umaryland.edu/pharmd
4 DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (PHARMD PROGRAM) CURRICULUM OUTLINE There are three key course series at the heart of the PharmD curriculum: Applied Science and Therapeutics (AST): These courses introduce and reinforce the integration of the basic and clinical sciences in therapeutic decision-making. This integration is further emphasized in complex disease cases in the pharmacotherapy courses in the third year. Abilities Lab: This series of six courses occurs each semester during the first three years of the curriculum. Self-paced activities include pre-lab readings and study in pharmaceutical calculations, medical terminology, and drug knowledge. Live exercises include participating in lab sessions, discussions, and self-development assignments. This course series is designed to introduce and reinforce contemporary pharmacy practice skills necessary for introductory pharmacy practice experiences within the first three professional years and advanced pharmacy practice experiences in the fourth professional year. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations: This ten-room, state of the art suite provides a formative clinical practice experience to expose students to real-world clinical situations that typify the pharmacist s expanding role in direct patient care. OSCEs are a method of assessing the practice-based abilities of our students in which professional actors serve as standardized patients and as evaluators of student performance in specific pharmaceutical care encounters in both formative and summative sessions. pharmacy.umaryland.edu/pharmd/curriculum
5 OUR CURRICULUM The PharmD curriculum at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy immerses students in six semesters of applied science and therapeutics courses and corresponding abilities labs in order to assure that our students are thoroughly prepared for advanced pharmacy practice experiences in the final year. The School has more than 800 preceptors in sites such as community pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, government agencies, and pharmaceutical companies. Students begin experiential rotations during their first year. pharmacy.umaryland.edu/pharmd/explearning EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING SOME EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING SITES HAVE INCLUDED: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services CVS Pharmacy The Johns Hopkins Hospital Kaiser Permanente Maryland Board of Pharmacy National Institutes of Health Rite Aid Pharmacy Shady Grove Adventist Hospital University of Maryland Medical Center U.S. Food and Drug Administration Walgreens Pharmacy Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

TUITION The School of Pharmacy provides a top-ranked education for a mid-range price. For current information on tuition, visit FINANCIAL AID Financial aid packages for students often include a combination of loans, grants, scholarships, and work-study designed to meet students needs. To qualify for aid, students must apply annually and meet the eligibility requirements. Students must complete the required financial aid application forms and are encouraged to do so by mid-february. For more information and application forms, visit SCHOOL OF PHARMACY SCHOLARSHIPS Through the generous gifts of alumni, friends, and professional associations, the School provides additional financial aid to its full-time students who are in need of support.
