1 PROJECT SYNOPSIS Free Training to Rural Girls in Nursing Assistant Course: Thiruvallur, Thiruvannamali, Dharmpuri, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Vellore, Cuddalore, Villupuram Districts are some of the backward districts in Tamilnadu. Agriculture is the main profession in these Districts. To alleviate poverty in these rural backward areas to some extent and for the uplift of rural women Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, arranges training in NURSING ASSISTANT course for the daughters of the agricultural labourers, weavers etc., who could not continue their studies beyond +2 owing to penury and are without any gainful employment. Nursing Assistant training was chosen for these rural girls, as the duration of this training is just a year and the scope for finding placement immediately after completion of the training is vast. They have been trained to dispense medicines and conduct simple tests, viz., evaluation of blood sugar etc. besides routine work in Hospitals. The starting salary is Rs.5000/- per month with a scope for it to increase to above Rs.5500/ /- per month within a year, depending upon the performance of the individual. 1

2 Currently 135 girls are undergoing training in various Institutions situated in Chennai City and the entire expenditure is borne by the Math. The Trainees report to the Math every month for the assessment of their performance. The Trainees maintain 100% attendance except on medical grounds. With the steady growth in the number of hospital in Chennai City and as most of the girls who studied 4-year Degree Course (B.Sc., Nursing) and 3½ - year Diploma in Nursing find placements in foreign countries (USA, UK etc.) there is a great demand for the girls, who have successfully undergone 1 year Nursing Assistant training. This RAMAKRISHNA MATH, NATTARAMPALLI, VELLORE DIST. TN., India is one of the branch Centers of the RAMAKRISHNA MATH AND MISSION, H.Q. BELUR MATH, WEST BENGAL. Since its inception in 1908 this center has been rendering services to the villages (More than 128 villages) in around Nattarampalli. This Centre is offering varieties of services to the rural poor taking into consideration their local needs and problems. Mainly in the field of Health and Education. Amidst his tight schedule, Mahatma Gandhi visited the Math in 1934 spent more than two hours in the campus and greatly appreciated Math s services to the poor. One of the main and worthy activities of the Math is the Charitable Dispensary, established in 1978 in which every day average 250 patients are being treated for various ailments at free of cost or at nominal fee. People are coming for treatment from about 104 surrounding villages. Two Qualified doctors supported by twelve paramedical staffs are engaged in this noble service and work for six days in a week. All are paid staffs. This Dispensary has the Departments of General, ophthalmology, Diagnostic Centre, X ray, E.C.G. (Computerised). Our Medical

5 service is very popular and much sought after even in neighboring Vaniambadi and Tiruppattur Taluks. In addition the mobile dispensary meets the medical needs of about 87 distant villages treating average 100 to 150 patients every day for six days in a week. Also now this is the dreadful Deng fever season which is widespread in many villages and our Medical Unit is doing all-out effort to treat them and also arrest and prevent the awful fever. But, suddenly this medical services are holdup due to want of Doctors, who are not ready to work without minimum salary of Rs 55,000/- i.e. Rs.35,000/ for Regular Disp. work from 8 am. to 2 pm. and Mobile Disp. work from 3pm to 6pm. Rs.20,000/-. It may be reasonable for their profession and service but this revenue crunch Math is not in a position to meet their demand and with the result our distant villagers and nearby villagers as well are the sufferers and not getting this essential service. To continue to provide one of the noble and essential needs of this medical service to these rural folks we need at least Rs. 6,60,000/- per year. If we get this minimum amount per year large number of neglected and far off village children and the senior citizens will be getting relief from physical ailments and benefitted. Actually, since due to want of doctors our mobile dispensary is currently defunct and daily we are getting dozens of phone calls asking for medical help and pathetic pleading to restart the mobile medical service. Under this circumstances we earnestly appeal and request noble minded and able persons like you to kindly help us for this noble cause which will certainly benefit thousands of children, women and senior citizens living in neglected and remote villages. There are many Institutions situated in Cities and towns serving the poor, slum people in multifarious ways. That s fine, necessary and commendable indeed. But Special Feature of this Ashrama, here in Nattarampalli is, this is situated in rural set up and in unfavorable environment serves silently for decades the rural poor, economically and socially backward populace.
