I trust that you enjoyed the time with your family over the Christmas break. We have some interesting activities planned for this month. Please check the calendar for specifics. Staffing: I am sad to report that our Grade 5/6 teacher, Ashley Martin, will be leaving us January 20. She will certainly be missed! We welcome Julie Tracey who will be returning from a maternity leave as our permanent 5/6 teacher. Mrs. Tracey will start on January 23. Sports Update: Practices are underway for intermediate girls and boys basketball. Link to St. Joe s: In December, guidance counselor Jen Boin and some prior students from Assumption met with grade 8 students to talk about what St. Joe s Secondary School has to offer. Safe Schools We are required by the Safe Schools Protocol to verify all student absences either with a parent or an emergency contact. If your child is going to be away, please call the school and leave a message. When buses have been cancelled, you do not need to call if your child rides a bus. If your child does not take the bus, please give us a quick call so we know for sure that your child is safe at home. Faith Development: Thanks for your support of the Holy Childhood Mission. Assumption School raised $ to help children around the world! We are living our faith through our new school motto: Believe in the Good in the World. Curriculum Connection: Our staff continues to focus on math this school year. Primary teachers are implementing daily number sense routines. Our older students continue to work on problem solving and Kagan structures. At our January staff meeting, our Board Math Coordinator, Sharon Gillies will be showing us some math apps to use on the school ipads. Students in grades 4, 5 & 6 attended an Art & Music Concert at St. Joe s. The Open House at St. Joe s for parents and gr. 8 students will be held on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Hope you will check it out! Parent Lending Library: The School Council has set up a lending library for parents. Books are currently on display in the front foyer if you wish to take a look. You are able to sign out a book using our new library gmail account or by coming into the school. Check out the details on our school webpage in the Parents & Community section. School Council: The next meeting of School Council will be Tuesday, Jan. 17 in the library, beginning at 7:00. Everyone is welcome! If you have any change to the regular pickup routine for your child, you need to inform the school either by phone or with a note in your child s agenda. This includes being picked up by one of the emergency contacts. Our goal is to keep all of the children safe. Piano Lessons: If you are interested in your child having private piano lessons during the school day, we have a second piano teacher available on Thursday afternoons. Please contact the school for more information (519) Little Jammers Guitar Lessons: Little Jammers is a beginner guitar program who has offered to come into the school to do a guitar program during lunch hours. This

2 Board approved program runs for 8 weeks. Students are supplied with a guitar to use for the duration of the program. This is open to students in grades 1 to 6 and the cost is $90 per student. If you are interested, please contact the school so that we can send you a registration form. P.D. Day: This Friday, January 13 is a P.D. Day. There will be no school for the students on that day. Teachers will be working on assessment. Kindergarten Registration: Registration for our new kindergarten students begins Monday, January 16. If you have a child born in 2013, they are eligible to begin school in September. Please call Cindy at the school to set up an appointment to register your child, or pass this information on to anyone you know who may have a child to register. When you come to register, please bring your child s baptismal certificate, birth certificate, and proof of address. Report Cards: Term 1 Report Cards will be sent home on Thursday, February 2. Parent- Teacher Conferences will be the evening of February 9. Assumption School presents... Family Math Night For families of students in JK to Grade 6 Tuesday, January 31 5:30 7:30 p.m. Enjoy an evening of fun math games and activities that you can do together. Activities include: Kitchen Math, a Games Room, Building Centre, Sports Math, Shopping, and an Adventure Booklet. Drop in at any time during the evening to participate in as many activities as you have time for. For each activity completed, children will receive a ticket for a draw. The winners will be drawn and prizes sent home the next day. Each family will receive a take-home package of more math activities to play at home. A light snack will be provided. Just be sure To dress for the weather and follow the safety tips: Wear a jacket, snow pants, boots, hat, gloves, and neck warmer. Bring extra socks and gloves to change if wet. 4 Parents Partnering with Educators for Elementary School For parents of children, with special needs, currently attending or soon to be attending school in 2017 Dates: Saturday February 4, 2017 Time: 9:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Location: TVCC, 779 Base Line Rd E, London Cost: Free (coffee & snack provided) Registration: Online at or call Carrie Connell at , ext at least one week prior to the session, two weeks if arranging childcare. Both parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Parking: LHSC Visitor Lot #7 at $4.00/hr, $12 daily maximum. Visa, MC and cash are accepted. Childcare: If childcare is a barrier for you to attend, please indicate during registration and we can explore options for children three years and older. This workshop is designed for parents whose children with special needs are currently attending or will be starting elementary school in the Fall There will be a presentation by Parent Mentors followed by a panel discussion and parents/caregivers will have time to network. The panel will include representatives from the TVDSB and LCDSB and TVCC. Topics will include entry to school, full-day (FDK) curriculum, school meetings and processes, Identification Placement Review Committee (IPRC) and Individual Education Plan (IEP).
