Children solve one-step problems involving division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher. Children recognise, find and name halves and quarters of quantities.

3 Division Year 2 Step 1: Find groups of using arrays 8 2 = = 2 Division is not commutative Step 2: Use known facts to help with division. Bead strings to find groups of. 12 divided into groups of 4 = 3 groups Find the twelfth bead and start at the knot, finding groups of 4 beads. How many groups can you make? X2, X5 and X10 corresponding division facts. Count in 3s. Mental and written examples Only working within 2,5 and 10 times table 8 2=4 15 5=3, Children know division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables Children calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication ( ), division ( ) and equals (=) signs

4 Division Year 3 Step 1: Use bead strings and known facts to group objects. Begin to draw a numberline to echo the bead string. Start at zero and work up to the number you are dividing into. Grouping ITP. Step 2: Use known facts to group using bead strings then numberlines. Create a table of facts using doubling and halving and x10. Recap 2, 5 and 10 times table X3, X4, X8 tables and related division facts. Mental and written Examples Only work with the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Children know division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables and recap on facts for the 2, 5 and 10 tables Children write and calculate division questions such as 2 digit by 1 digit using know division facts.

5 Division Year 4 Step 1: Use known facts to group using numberlines. Step 2: Use known facts to group on a numberline, using subtraction to find the final jumps Step 2a: extend to a written method Continue creating tables of facts using doubling and halving and x10. All times tables up to X12 and related division facts. Use arrays to support learning new division facts if needed. Written and mental Examples Use arrays and models and images to support learning division facts. X6, X7, X9, X11 and X12 are new times tables. To divide by 1. Know it is not possible to divide by 0 (how many groups of zero in 23? Error) Written method shown above up to 3 digit by 1 digit, no remainders 54 4= 72 3= Children recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to Children use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally, including: multiplying by 0 and 1; dividing by 1 (it is not possible to divide by 0) Children begin to use a written method for division by a single digit.

Children divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number and interpret remainders appropriately for the context. Children multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.
