3 Elective Wheel Short courses that rotate every 6-9 weeks, giving students and opportunity to sample classes they may take in 7 th or 8 th grade May include: Computer Basics and Digital Citizenship Computer Programming and Robotics Quest Life Skills for Young Teens Go Green Environmental Science World Language Exploration Visual Arts Social Dance

6 Quarter System & Grades Traditional Letter Grade Issued for Each Course Every Nine Weeks A = Consistently exceeds grade level expectations for mastery of learning targets B = Consistently meets grade level expectations for mastery of learning targets C = Demonstrates mastery of some learning targets and approaching mastery in others D = Demonstrates mastery of few learning targets F = Fails to meet most learning targets Progress reports issued at the mid-point of each quarter

9 Transitioning to Middle School Parent partnership with the school is still critical Organization is key with multiple teachers and subjects Establish a time each day to check your child s minder binder (planner) and supervise homework Make it a routine each weekend to help your child organize his/her backpack and notebooks Your child can expect to have 1-2 hours of homework nightly

10 Expectations for Middle School Students Teachers and staff will expect students to be accountable for recording and completing assignments and bringing supplies When students are absent, they are expected to complete the work missed during the absence Late work is generally accepted for partial credit, but students need to be aware of the deadline for late work Students are expected to ask teachers for help when they need it please role play this at home if your child is shy Parents may drop off and students may pick up forgotten homework, lunches, etc. at the Student Services desk Students have a 4-minute passing period between classes, and they are expected to move directly from one class to another and to be on time

11 Expectations for Middle School Students Students will be issued an ID card in the first few weeks of school and will need to have it with them at all times Personal electronic devices (such as cell phones) are allowed at school, but they must be off and stored in backpacks unless the teacher allows them for instructional purposes Kindness counts We pride ourselves on providing a safe, bully-free environment, for all students to be themselves at school, and encourage social interactions (planned or casual) to be helpful not hurtful. The B Word Bullying can take many forms including direct verbal or physical acts, indirect social attacks and in the form of cyber-bullying District procedures for investigating reports of bullying

14 Fallon Facilities Expected enrollment next year is approximately 1,400 students Seven new classrooms will be placed on our campus this summer Academic lockers will be removed and sidewalks widened to accommodate student movement from class to class Each student will have his/her own PE locker with locks provided Students eat lunch either in the MPR or at the blue tables

16 Home / School Communication Fallon Middle School official website check headlines regularly ( Teacher websites are not required but most do maintain one Use Infinite Campus and Parent Portal to keep track of grades and missing assignments Special presentation on Back to School Night about how to use this system , phone, or conference? for quick questions requiring a simple answer Phone or in-person conference to discuss concerns or special needs Conference with the teacher before contacting an administrator Back to School Night early September Parent Conference Night end of 1 st quarter (Nov.)

17 Parent Involvement School Site Council (SSC) Develops, approves, and monitors our Single Plan for Student Achievement (the school level strategic plan) Elected membership includes Fallon staff, parents, and students Parent Faculty Club (PFC) Plans events for students and their families Financial support of school programs Sign up for weekly of events on campus Volunteer to help with clerical work in the office or classroom Volunteer to supervise club activities
