4 STUDENT SAFETY & SECURITY The safety and security of our students is of primary importance. To attend to safety and to ensure an optimal learning environment, we work together with parents to adhere to the following routines. Parents and visitors are not permitted to enter classroom or hallway areas during instructional time. Please sign in at the office when volunteering or if your child is late. Phone Home for Safety Program extension 1 (24 hour message line) If a child will be ABSENT, parents are required to phone the school attendance line before 8:00 a.m. If the child is late, parents are required to come into the school to sign-in, obtain a LATE slip and say good-bye in the office. The child then proceeds to his/her classroom. When a child is absent and there has been no communication to inform the school we will call all of the parent contact numbers until we confirm the absence. Lock Doors for Safety All doors to the school, with the exception of the front door, will be locked after school commences each day. Children arriving late must be escorted into the school with a parent/guardian through the front door and report to the office. Parents must sign their child in. 4

5 Drive & Drop-Off Zone Cranston School has a DROP OFF ZONE along Cranston Way in front of the School Parking Lot. We are asking all parents to follow rules regarding dropping off and picking up of students. We do not allow parents to park along the Drop-Off Zone area between the hours of: 8:00 am to 9:00 am and 2:30 pm to 3:15 pm. Throughout the day, this is a city patrolled 2-minute-drop-off-zone only. Please try to drop your child off up to 10 minutes before school starts this will help to avoid some of the traffic congestion. When dropping off your child, a 30 second HUG & GO is the standard NO PARKING CARS at the DROP OFF ZONE AREA and escorting your child into the school. Please have children exiting on the passenger side of the car. Students should NOT be exiting on the driver s side due to traffic. If you are late, please do not park in the BUS ZONE AREA at the front of the school on Cranston Drive. The Bus Zone is clearly marked with orange pylons. Please park and escort your child into the school through the main front doors, sign them in and get a late slip at the office.. Please be aware that cars parked illegally along Cranston Drive can and have been ticketed by the city. Entry and Dismissal Please bring your child to the Kindergarten doors at their designated time. Teachers come outside to meet students and escort them to the classroom at entry times. Please ensure promptness at entry and dismissal times. Five minutes are allotted for kindergarten students. Students are expected to arrive on time so they do not miss important instructional time. Parents taking a child out of school early are required to report to the office to sign the student out. If a child has an appointment and arrives back at the school, the parent must also check the child in at the office. Please inform your teacher of alternate pick-up plans (eg. friend or grandparent) with a written note or an before the beginning of the school day. Illness Good health is necessary for effective learning. We also foster a consideration for the well-being of others. When a child is sick, parents will be called to come and take their child home. If your child has a communicable illness (eg. cold, flu, pink eye) please do not send him/her to school. Please call the attendance line before 8:00 a.m. at (403) ext. 1, even if you have ed the teacher. This ensures the office receives the message in the event the teacher is away. 5

6 Newsletters and Weekly Messages The school s monthly newsletter can be found at Newsletters are published during the first week of each month. Weekly Parent Messages are ed home every Friday afternoon. Allergies / Health Concerns To help us keep your child safe and comfortable at school please notify your child s teacher in writing of any allergies or other health concerns. You will be asked to fill out a Severe Allergy Alert Form or Student Physical or Medical Condition Form should your child require it. These forms are available at the school office. A reminder that as a "Peanut Aware School, we ask that peanuts and peanut products are not included in snacks and on fieldtrips. We cannot guarantee we are completely nut free so please discuss peanut safety with your allergic child. We do our very best to be as peanut free as possible. Communicating with your Child s teacher At the beginning of the year each student will receive a communication folder. This folder will be used to send notes and information sheets to and from school. Most other communication will be by blog, or school website. The blog is the primary way teachers will communicate with parents. Please check it every day. If you your child s teacher regarding an absence, please also leave a message on the Attendance Line (403) ext. 1. Teachers are not available for phone calls during instructional hours. You may leave a message for the teacher at the school office at (403) ext. 0. The teacher will return your call within 24 hours. Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences Your first opportunity to have a formal meeting time with your child s teacher will be on September 24, 2015 at our Open House. Watch for information to be sent home in September explaining the procedure for booking this conference. Snacks Your child will have a daily snack time. Please send one quick, healthy snack that your child can easily manage (i.e. fruit, vegetables, cheese and crackers, granola bar) as well as a water bottle. No juice boxes, flavoured water or milk please. 6

7 Indoor/Outdoor Shoes For safety reasons, a pair of non-slip, rubber-soled shoes is required for in school and physical education classes. Please provide a pair of indoor shoes and put your child s name in each shoe. Shoes must be slip on or Velcro- NO LACES PLEASE. Shoes with lace closures will be sent home. Labeling All of your child s personal items including shoes, backpacks, coats, boots, etc. should be clearly labeled with his/her name and/or initials. Clothing Please send your child to school in comfortable, washable clothing that is suitable for gym and trips outside, as well as for messy arts and crafts. Closings and fastenings that can be managed independently are important. Please send your child daily with a change of pants, underwear and socks in case of a bathroom accident. Backpacks To safely transport notices, artwork, library books, lunch kits and extra clothing to and from school, please provide your child with a full-sized backpack that is large enough to adequately accommodate these items. Your child needs to bring the backpack each day. Toys No toys are allowed at school. These items routinely become lost or broken which results in unhappiness for your child. You will be notified in advance should items be required for a special activity. Lost and Found Items found outside of the classroom are placed in the Lost and Found bins located in the school foyer or in the kindergarten Lost-and Found bin in the classroom. Unclaimed items are sent to charity twice per year. Volunteers We appreciate and value parent volunteers in Kindergarten. Our classroom volunteer program will start in October. The support you give us enriches the learning experiences we provide. Each teacher will provide more volunteer information in September. All volunteers must complete a volunteer registration form and a police security clearance form in the office before volunteering. Two pieces of identification, including photo ID, must be presented at that time. Please check with the school secretary if you require further information. 7
