6 6 Foundation Degree in Education Duration - 2 years, part time fast track. Who is the course for? This course is for anyone who is working in a learning support role, e.g. teaching assistants, bilingual support assistants, learning mentors, covers supervisors, P.E. and sports coaches or voluntary helpers in any phase of education from early years and primary to further education. The course is also suitable for anyone aspiring to progress to primary teacher training or those in education roles in the private sector. You need to be working or volunteering in a relevant setting. What does the course involve? You will attend college one evening per week. The modules have a broad and flexible content adaptable to your needs, while providing an essential core of academic knowledge, skills and understanding. The programme will develop your subject knowledge, work-based knowledge and study skills in a coherent package. In particular, the course aims to provide those working within an education environment a chance to reflect on their own particular situation. Modules include: Personal, Professional and Academic Development Development and Learning Behaviour for Learning in the Inclusive Organisation Changes and Developments in Education Professionalism and Educational Strategies Learning and the Inclusive Environment Developing Educational Practice within the Inclusive Organisation Individual Research Project How is the course assessed? Programme and module outcomes are formally assessed through a range of tasks and activities which ask you to link learning in the workplace to the taught programme. For example as an Education Practitioner you will have the opportunity to be assessed against an individual action plan identifying your strengths and areas for development in relation to your skills, knowledge and understanding. You will also be assessed on your understanding of: learner motivation and rewards; emotional intelligence; the effective learning environment. What are the entry requirements? Employment paid or voluntary for the equivalent of at least one day per week as a minimum requirement, supporting learning in an educational setting Three passes at GCSE, grade C or above, including English Language Normally have an A level or equivalent qualification e.g. NVQ level 3/BTEC/a level 3 CACHE Diploma and/or voluntary experience Be aged 18 or over Provide an acceptable DBS (Disclosure and Baring Service Checks) or Declaration of Criminal Convictions What are the progression routes? On successful completion of your Foundation Degree you can then top up to a full BA (Hons) in Education by studying an extra 120 credits at level 6. Other opportunities for progression may be available depending on your field of work, the phase of education that you work in and your other qualifications. 7 7 BA (Hons) in Education (Top Up) Duration - 1 year, part time. Who is the course for? The BA (Hons) Education provides a top up of 120 credits for people who already hold 240 credits in a relevant field. It is an opportunity for learners who have completed an appropriate Foundation Degree, for example Staffordshire University s Foundation Degree in Education, where they are engaged in work with children and young people. However students can enrol on the course from other institutions with differing Foundation Degrees. It is designed for people employed in the field of education in either a paid or voluntary capacity. What does the course involve? You will need to attend college one afternoon per week. You will study five modules which are: Changes and Development in Education Doing Education Differently Research Methods Research Project Portfolio of Educational Professional Development What are the entry requirements? Applications will be considered from students with at least 240 CATS points, from a relevant course The course involves work place tasks therefore students should be employed in a school either in a paid or volunteer role for at least one day per week What are the progression routes? On successful completion of your BA (Hons) you may wish to progress to a Master s Degree in a related subject. Many learners completing the course will pursue a career in teaching and progress to programmes such as a PGCE. Those aspiring to teach need to research the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) requirements for their sector and subject area and are a good places to start. Who is the course validated by? Staffordshire University Proposed award structure subject to validation How is the course assessed? A range of formative and summative assessment methods are used which include assignment writing, research programme dissertation and submission of a professional development portfolio.

8 8 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Duration - 8 weeks, part time. Who is the course for? This course is for new entrants to the post compulsory teaching sector - you don t need any prior teaching experience or qualifications. It also suits people who may be teaching or training already and want to gain formal qualifications. You should be qualified and experienced in the subject area you wish to teach or train. What does the course involve? You will attend college one to two sessions per week. There is one module to study. Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector acts as a basic, practical introduction to teaching in post-compulsory education. You will be introduced to the roles and responsibilities of teachers in the sector, consider the issues of equality and diversity and be introduced to notions of reflective practice. You will learn how to devise basic session plans, prepare resources, assess learning against a course requirement, provide support to learners and become familiar with key legislation and learn to evaluate your work. What are the entry requirements? You should hold an appropriate qualification in the subject you intend to teach Good communication skills are essential A GCSE in Maths and English at Grade C or above or a level 2 equivalent What are the progression routes? If you secure a minimum of 100 hours of teaching, you can progress to the full Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Who is the course validated by? Staffordshire University How is the course assessed? You will complete a number of tasks including some academic writing and an observed micro teaching session

9 Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)/Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) Duration - 1 year full time or 2 years part time. Who is the course for? This award is for those wishing to teach in further education colleges, sixth form colleges, school sixth forms, work-based training and adult and community education and training. The course is aimed at those wishing to gain a full role in teaching. A full role is defined as delivery of teaching/training that involves planning e.g. schemes of work and lesson planning, delivery of teaching and learning activity and assessment of learners and related student support. The full teaching role carries the full range of teaching responsibilities, whether on a full time, part time, fractional, fixed term, temporary or agency basis. What does the course involve? You will attend college for 3 sessions per week. The award is a modular award and is studied at college; you will need to attend college lectures and complete 100+ hours of teaching practice in your subject area. Teaching Practice will be available at the college within some subject areas for suitable applicants. Students studying for both the PGCE and DTLLS will complete the same modules however; students will complete assignment work at different levels. PGCE students will complete modules at levels 4, 5 & 7. DTLLS students will complete modules at levels 4 & 5. Modules include: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Understanding and Managing Behaviour in a Learning Environment Planning and Inclusive Learning Enabling Learning Through Assessment Applying Theories and Principles for Planning Enabling Inclusive Learning and Teaching Continuing Personal and Professional Development Curriculum Development for Inclusive Practice Wider Professional Practice Plus two other research based modules How is the course assessed? A range of formative and summative assessment methods are used which include assignment writing, presentations and observations. What are the entry requirements? For the PGCE you must hold a Degree in the subject area you wish to teach For the DTLLS you must hold a minimum of a level 3 or 4 qualification in the subject area you wish to teach GCSE in English at Grade C or above or Level 2 equivalent Preferably a GCSE in Maths at Grade C or above or Level 2 equivalent Applicants must have access to a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice over the duration of the course. Teaching must take place within recognised locations, as defined within LLUK regulations Applicants require a Subject Mentor who is experienced in the same or a similar subject/vocational area What are the progression routes? Students completing the Diploma (DTLLS) may wish to top up to a full Degree. Students completing the PGCE may wish to progress to Masters level of study. Who is the course validated by? 10 10 Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies Duration - 3 years, part time. Who is the course for? The part time course is designed for practitioners who are currently employed, either paid or voluntary in an early years environment and who would like to further their academic qualifications. This could be as a nanny or child minder, or someone working in a playgroup, children s centre, Sure Start unit, private day nursery or school. What does the course involve? You will attend college one evening per week for most of the course. A good deal of learning on this course will take place in the workplace, using study guidance and the experience of colleagues. Every student has a personal tutor to assist them. The course is made up of nine modules, the course begins with a study skills module in which students identify their individual development needs, including those within their work-based role. Modules include: The Developing Child: A Holistic View The Planning Cycle Enabling Environments Working with Children Under Three Children in Society: Contemporary Issues Global Perspectives of Early Childhood Education and Care Safeguarding and Child Protection Resource Management How is the course assessed? This is a modular course and each student studies nine modules, each of which is assessed through a variety of assessment methods. These include essays, reports, presentations, timed essays, and projects. Assessment is continuous and written assessment encourages students to reflect on learning experiences both in the classroom and in the workplace. Students are encouraged to make connections between theory and practice. What are the entry requirements? You will need to have a relevant and current level 3 childcare, playwork or early years qualification A GCSE Grade C or above in English 2 years post-qualifying experience Employment, paid or voluntary within a child care setting of at least two full days per week Statement of support and commitment from your employer Provide an acceptable DBS (Disclosure and Baring Service Checks) or Declaration of Criminal Convictions What are the progression routes? On successful completion of your Foundation Degree you can then top up to a full BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies or Education by studying an extra 120 credits at level 6. Who is the course validated by? Staffordshire University EARLY CHILDHOOD STUDIES

11 Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies Duration - 2 years, full time. Who is the course for? The full time course is for any student with level 3 qualifications who wishes to pursue a career working with children. What does the course involve? You will attend college two to three days a week and placements in a range of early years settings for two days each week. You will gain significant experience of working in the sector through placements and development of professional practice. You will study nine modules over the two year course. Modules include: The Developing Child: A Holistic View The Planning Cycle Enabling Environments Professional Development: Babies and Very Young Children Children in Society: Contemporary Issues Global Perspectives of Early Childhood Education and Care Safeguarding and Child Protection Resource Management Placements are assessed through demonstrating practical competencies for working with children, reflective accounts and work-based tasks. 11 What are the entry requirements? Level 2 qualification in Maths and English, e.g. A GCSE Grade C or above in English, Key Skills Level 2 or Adult Numeracy and Adult Literacy level UCAS points from A levels (including AS) or BTEC National Diploma Mature candidates with alternative experience are also welcome to apply What are the progression routes? On successful completion of your Foundation Degree you can then top up to a full BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies or Education by studying an extra 120 credits at level 6. Who is the course validated by? Staffordshire University Subject to validation How is the course assessed? This is a modular course and each student studies nine modules, each of which is assessed through a variety of assessment methods. 12 12 BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies (Top Up) Duration - 18 months, part time. Who is the course for? The BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies provides a top up of 120 credits for people who already hold 240 credits in a relevant field. What does the course involve? You will attend college one evening per week. The first two modules in the programme are studied during the first two terms. Students may leave the course at this point and apply for the award of ordinary Degree, or opt to continue to the Honours route. Modules include: Advanced Early Childhood Development Leadership and Teams The Reflective Practitioner Small Scale Independent Research Project What are the entry requirements? Applicants for the programme must be in employment (paid or voluntary) within an early years setting for at least two days per week You must have at least three years post qualifying work experience (paid or voluntary) What are the progression routes? You may progress to become a new Early Years Teacher employed in the sector. You could also gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through progressing to a PGCE or Schools Direct programme route. You could take a Masters Degree in Early Childhood or another relevant field. Who is the course validated by? 13 NEW FOR HND in Creative Media Production Duration - 2 years, full time. Who is the course for? This course is for students who want a career in the diverse and expansive world of converging media industries. What does the course involve? The course combines a balance of practical and theory through lectures, practical workshops, live briefs, guest speakers and creative projects teaching you diverse modules such as: Video Editing (using final cut pro and premier) Single Camera Film Production Video and Audio Development Camera and Lighting Techniques How is the course assessed? A range of formative and summative assessment methods are used which include assignment writing, presentations and portfolio. What are the entry requirements? Advanced GCE (B/C 200 points) BTEC Diploma (DMM profile) related subject Vocational A level (200 points) Media preferred Applications are welcome from mature students who have relevant experience and can demonstrate academic potential Other previous qualifications and experience will be considered All offers are subject to interview What are the progression routes? The world of Media Production is becoming more diverse. Geographically, Media City (UK) based in Salford Quays has production companies as well as BBC and ITV Studios. In addition, freelance opportunities are becoming more relevant in the growing Media climate. There will also be an option for you to top up into a full BA(Hons) Degree by taking an additional 120 credits at University. Who is the course validated by? University of Salford CREATIVE ARTS

14 14 Michelle Schofield First Class Honours Degree in Early Childhood Studies My name is Michelle and I have recently completed my BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies. I started attending Ashton Sixth Form College when I left school and I completed my BTEC National Diploma in Early Years. Upon completion I began work in my chosen career. Later, I decided that I wanted to go back to college to study for a Degree to enhance my career prospects. I chose to return to Ashton Sixth Form College as an adult learner to complete my Foundation Degree in Young Children s Learning and Development. They offered the course that I was looking for at an affordable price. The college is local which enables me to fit the course into my busy work and family life. CASE STUDIES I completed my Foundation Degree and then stayed at Ashton Sixth Form College to top up to the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies. My tutor was extremely supportive and would often stay behind after lessons to discuss assignments and I could always contact her in between classes via or telephone when she was always responsive. The courses which I have completed have been useful, interesting and enabled me to gain higher qualifications to help me to progress to management level in my chosen career. The course has been difficult at times; however I have been well supported and worked hard. The facilities and support at Ashton Sixth Form College are excellent, the tutors take a personal interest in you to ensure that you reach your potential and therefore I would recommend Ashton Sixth Form College to my friends and colleagues.

15 I am currently studying a Foundation Degree in Education; the course has changed my life completely. I started out by working as a volunteer at a children s centre, and then I got a voluntary teaching assistant role at a primary school. I was volunteering for a year when I applied for a full time paid role at the school, I was so happy to be offered the job. 15 James Sidebottom Foundation Degree in Education I had very little experience as a teaching assistant but the course has improved my knowledge and skills and the fact that I was studying demonstrated my dedication and determination when I applied for the job. I won t lie and say the course is easy but with the support and commitment of the tutors and my goal in mind, my hard work is now paying off literally! I have gone from very low earnings to now being a home owner with a good salary. Studying has definitely improved my life. When I complete my Foundation Degree in Education I then want to complete a further 18 months to top up into a full BA (Hons) Degree. My long term goal is to become a social worker or a teacher.

16 16 Foundation Degree in Public Services Duration - 2 years, full time. Who is the course for? This Foundation Degree is for anyone who is interested in a career in Public Services or who is currently in a career in the Public Services sector or who is a volunteer. If you are not already a volunteer or in a career linked to the Public Services you must be looking for a position as a volunteer such as a special constable, St. John Ambulance first aider or Territorial Army soldier. What does the course involve? You will attend college two to three days per week. During the course you will complete fourteen modules and students are encouraged to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award as part of the course if they wish. Modules include: Personal & Study Skills Media and the Public Services Managing Teams & Individuals Diversity and Ethics in the Public Services Leadership and Outdoor Skills Justice and Punishment Managing Physical Activity Work Based Learning Entry and Enquiry into the Public Services Psychology and Criminology Government and Finance in the Public Services Mentoring & Coaching Emergency and Disaster Management Work Based Project How is the course assessed? A range of formative and summative assessment methods are used which include assignment writing, presentations and portfolio. What are the entry requirements? Level 2 qualification in Maths and English, e.g. GCSE Grade C or above, Key Skills level 2 or Adult Numeracy and Adult Literacy level 2 Preferably 240 UCAS points from A levels (including AS) or a BTEC National Diploma with an MMM profile or equivalent Consideration will be given to students who have achieved 200 UCAS points or BTEC National Diploma with an MMP profile Candidates who can evidence a satisfactory work experience portfolio would be favourably considered and applications from mature students are encouraged There will be an expectation that students will seek part time or voluntary work within public services whilst on the award What are the progression routes? On successful completion of your Foundation Degree you can then top up to a full BA (Hons) in Public Services Management by studying an extra 120 credits at level 6. Who is the course validated by? Staffordshire University HEALTH AND THE PUBLIC SECTOR

17 Foundation Year Health Studies Duration - 1 year, full time. Who is the course for? This course is for students with an interest in health and social care. It is year one of a four year BSc Degree programme in health or can also act as a route for those wanting to pursue specific health or social care professions. It provides you with an understanding of key issues in health from a range of disciplines in a way which will be stimulating and challenging. What does the course involve? The Foundation Year will introduce you to the main themes of the Health Studies Award and many of the broad issues associated with health and health policy. You will develop your ability to work at the academic standard required to achieve knowledge and understanding of the broad issues associated with health and health policy and you will become familiar with accessing evidence based material and data which will inform your studies. You will also develop your communication and problem solving skills which will equip you to continue with your undergraduate career. and summative assessment. Methods of assessment include presentations, demonstrations, essays and research projects. What are the entry requirements? We welcome applications from people with a variety of qualifications, skills and experience. Applicants are individually assessed. 17 What are the progression routes? On successful completion of the Foundation Year you can continue with the BSc (Hons) Health Studies at Staffordshire University. The award also provides the opportunity to be considered for one of the professional routes such as Social Work, Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedical Science and Operating Department Practitioner. Other under graduate routes also possible. Who is the course validated by? Staffordshire University Subject to validation Modules include: Skills for Higher Education Introduction to Health Policy Measuring Health and Wellness Communication Skills for Personal Development Introduction to Health Sciences Health Choice and Life-Span How is the course assessed? There are a variety of assessment methods used between and within modules. Where appropriate, to reflect the vocational and practical nature of the award, the assessment will be a portfolio (phased series of tasks) which may include work done individually and in groups and will have practical and written components. Most modules adopt the use of both formative

20 20 Many people are concerned about the increasing cost of completing a university course. Student finance is available to all first time under graduates, to find out more log onto Studying at a higher level may be more affordable than you think. Take a look at the repayment details for loans. Student Loan Repayment You are eligible for repayment: the April after you leave/graduate if full time. the April 4 years after starting if part time. No repayments until earning over 21,000 pa ( 1,750 per month) gross. Repayments collected by HMRC, at a rate of 9% of what you earn above 21,000. If you stop earning or your income drops below 21,000 your repayments will stop and only start again when your income is more than 21,000 a year. After 30 years, any outstanding balance will be written off. 22 22 In circumstances where you wish to withdraw, the following applies: If you do not commence a programme of study, withdraw or intermit within the first two weeks, including induction week, of the published start date of the award, you will normally be entitled to receive a refund of the whole of the tuition fees paid less any deposit. If you withdraw from your programme of study or intermit after the first two weeks, even if you have not taken the opportunity to attend, you will normally receive a refund based on the table below. If you are a continuing student enrolled on a Staffordshire University programme and complete e-enrolment and subsequently decide not to start the new academic year you will be charged 25% of the tuition fee unless you notify the university and the college by 17 September of your decision to withdraw. All tuition fees are paid directly to the university or college on your behalf by the student loan company. If you are self-funding you will be required to pay the college or university as directed by admissions. 24 24 Additional Learning Support All students undertake an initial assessment that assists in the identification of additional needs. Further assessment is available through Additional Learning Support and can be booked via the Inclusive Learning Manager. Additional Learning Support is available for students who have specific learning difficulties or disabilities. Support is tailored to student needs. Academic Study Skills The college is committed to ensuring that all of our university level students develop academic study skills. All courses have academic study skills modules to help you get started. The college also offers academic skills workshops, drop in sessions and appointment based sessions for students. We also have academic study skills advice and materials available through the college s virtual learning environment and our university partners learning platforms. Academic Study Skills includes: Developing Academic Writing Research Skills Reading Skills Referencing English Skills Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation Assignment Techniques SUPPORT AND FACILITIES

26 26 Studying for my Early Years Degree part time was one of the best decisions I have made, particularly at Ashton Sixth Form. The tutors have all been very supportive and have helped me all the way through. I have been able to use all of my new knowledge and skills day to day in my job as a nursery nurse. I have been able to progress in my career and I now have lots more opportunities. I d like to say how much I appreciate the support of my tutor who has been great. I have been given support in the classroom and also between lessons. The facilities are fantastic especially the coffee shop.
