Mission Statement Through a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, accountability, and community involvement, Oakton High School will provide rigorous, relevant, and well-rounded education for all students. SUBMIT If you have an article that you would like to have included in Access Oakton, please forward it to Marcia Pickett at: [email protected]. The due dates for articles for future publications are February 7, April 1 and May 30. PTSA MEETINGS All PTSA meetings are held in the OHS Library beginning at 7:00 pm. The next meeting is February 5, Newsletter designed by Carly Stonehouse, Oakton Outlook Editor-in-Chief and Erin Preaskorn, Oakton Outlook Copy Editor Letter from the President We have just passed the midpoint of the second quarter and I hope all students have had a good start to the year. Should any students feel they need additional support, Oakton has a tremendous portfolio of resources that are available from or can be coordinated by the school. Please do not hesitate to reach out to teachers, counselors or administrators should help be needed. PTSA meetings provide a forum for discussion of any issues that an Oakton High School community member may have regarding the school. At each meeting, parents and administrators are available and willing to address or find answers to questions that arise. In January and again in the spring, we will be bringing in Meg Sullivan, a local psychologist, to provide parenting guidance and support to our parents. We will notify you once we have confirmed dates. We have requested that the Activities Office include the weekly schedule of activities going on in the Keep in Touch s that arrive each week. The schedule includes all sports, music, drama and other events made known to the Activities Office. We hope this will encourage attendance and support for our many talented students. For seniors and the parents of seniors, this is a very busy and stressful time. Contact your child s guidance counselor should you have any questions. Do not hesitate to reach out to your fellow parents either. We are all on this journey together!! Some advisories are participating in the Capstone pilot. Students in these advisories are involved in service projects that address a variety of issues including improvement of various aspects of the high school s campus, improving the lives of those living in long-term care facilities, helping a Head Start program and reaching out to the homeless of our community. Any student who is not a part of a Capstone advisory but wishes to be involved in a project can either join a project in one of the participating advisories or can propose and manage their own Capstone project with support from the Capstone Advisory team. A huge thanks to Brooks Moran doing an incredible job with getting the directory out and putting in countless hours to verify data and distribute the hard copies. We greatly appreciate this endeavor. Another huge thank you goes to our new Treasurer, Melissa Weber who has done a great job transitioning onto the PTSA board. This year s December break is a full two weeks. The administration and teachers endeavor to not have any assignments due immediately after the break so that this time can truly be a time to rest and reflect. We wish the entire OHS community a safe and wonderful respite. We hope to see you at our February 5 PTSA meeting. Kirsten Kunkler Rucker President-OHS PTSA A look inside... 2 ACCESS ADMINISTRATION Letter from the Principal: December, 2013 Dear Oakton Parents, Happy holidays to you and your family! I am thankful to be part of a community that surrounds our students and faculty with support. Our students continue to excel because of the love and commitment that surrounds them. As always, we have much to celebrate at Oakton, including students such as Ben Wang, an Oakton junior who was named a Regional Finalist in the 2013 Siemens Competition. Honored by the Siemens Foundation as one of the brightest high school minds in contention for the nation s most coveted teen science prize, Ben is eligible to win a scholarship of over $10,000. Winners will be announced in a few days. Good luck, Ben! Congratulations are also due to the Oakton Girls Cross Country team who won the conference, region, state titles this year. We are so proud of the discipline, talent, and coaching that brought you such outstanding success. Bravo! You may have noticed recent headlines about the performance of American students on the 2012 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment). Words such as sobering and stagnation are being used to describe the academic skill level of fifteen-year-olds in the United States. I am glad to report that these generalizations do not apply to the students of Oakton High School based on the data that we garnered from our participation in the PISA for Schools Pilot Test in the spring of In both reading and mathematics, Oakton students far surpass the U.S. average when compared with the results of the PISA 2009 test. To read the detailed and engaging report of our students performance, follow this link: edu/pla/ost/pisa/school_level_reports/oakton_hs.pdf. And for a discussion of this test s significance to Oakton, take a look at this video which was recently showcased at an international PISA press conference: ost/pisa/fcps_pisa_large.mp4. Because we found this pilot test so valuable in its rich content and implications for school improvement, we will be participating again this winter. If you have a fifteen-year-old student who is randomly selected to participate in this test, I ask that you encourage them to do so as it gives Oakton students a chance to shine internationally and affords us extremely valuable feedback as a school. Looking to the future, Oakton students, teachers, and administrators have formed a committee to plan for a major school renovation that will begin in a few years. With the recent approval of a $250 million dollar school construction bond, $4.5 million have been allocated to launch renovation planning for Oakton at the county level. Here at the school level, we are researching and collecting data to inform the planning process. Stay tuned for details over the next year as plans unfold. We are excited to move our facilities into the 21st century! On a different note, you may have heard that FCPS is in the processing of planning for difficult financial times. Despite the constraints of this $140.7 million deficit, FCPS principals, other county leaders, and our new superintendent, Dr. Karen Garza, are working toward innovative solutions with students at the heart of all decisions. For more detailed information on the county budget, follow this link to our Citizen s Guide: pdf. As you know, good news and various events are ever-unfolding at Oakton High School, which is why we have recently opened accounts on Twitter and Facebook. Please follow OaktonHS on Twitter and OaktonHS on Facebook for celebrations, news, and pictures of various events. Once again, thank you for your participation in the Oakton PTSA. I wish you and your family a safe, restful, and joyful holiday season. John Banbury Oakton High School Principal [email protected] PAGE 2

As part of Oakton s Project Based Learning Initiative, students made authentic positive campaign commercials for this year s down-ballot races. The purpose of these commercials was to provide a service to the community by helping to inform the electorate prior to Election Day as well as gain firsthand knowledge of campaigns and elections. The students ads may be accessed at In addition to classroom assignments, large numbers of Oakton students participated in the following activities: volunteering for individual candidates, serving as Election Pages and Election Officers for the Fairfax County Board of Elections and being first-time voters. 6 UPDATES The Counselor s Corner Tis the season The Counseling Department is excited to see this time of year approach as we move into several important parts of our overall program. We have been working with seniors on applications, freshmen on transitioning to high school and a great deal in between. Our tenth grade program will focus on career awareness and offered our students the opportunity to fill out a personality profile and compare it to the careers that could match well with their results. Juniors will begin to look at planning for life after high school and college searches in the spring. There will be a curriculum night Jan. 16th here at Oakton to inform parents about the course offerings available next year. This evening presentation highlights the elective choices that students can select from as well as providing guidelines on the honors and Advanced Placement programs. We invite you to attend prior to your student s registration, so the course selection process can be as smooth and accurate as possible. In November, we were able to provide three lessons for the Teacher Advisory periods. The first was an Anti- Bullying program. Our goal is to broaden the student s understanding of the types of bullying and exclusion that can occur in a modern high school and work to eliminate prevent them at Oakton. Teachers wore their college gear for the second, and were able to share their stories and experiences in finding their own career path. We also helped coordinate the Fun Day activities gear toward building community. The students participated in a wide variety of activities, from board games, to tie dying. One of our main tools in the Counseling Department is Family Connection, the county s online portal to college and career planning. This system offers a way to track extracurricular activities, develop a resume, explore colleges and much, much more. Student information like GPA is available here. We encourage all grade levels to begin to familiarize themselves with the offerings, and if your student has had access from middle school, there are some changes in the high school version to check out! You can access the site from Blackboard, or get more information on our new webpage mentioned above. As always, the counselors are here to help students and their family in a wide range of circumstances. Please feel free to contact us for support or have your student see us in our offices. The best times for students are before school, Cougar Time, lunch or after school. News from Theatre Arts I will have to say that I think our fall season went swimmingly. For those of you who were in our audience for Metamorphoses, I m sure you will agree. Our Drama 3 & 4 students produced two magical and powerful shows closing with Elephant s Graveyard before Thanksgiving break. Thanks to all the parent volunteers and audience members who came out to support the students who have been working so hard since September. We will celebrate our success with our annual field trip to NYC on December 11th to see KINKY BOOTS and MATILDA. We are also in the process of reading multiple one act plays as we choose what will be a part of our Cougar Dinner Theatre on Monday, February 10th. We look forward to seeing you then. Happy Holidays everyone. Vanessa Gelinas [email protected] PAGE 6

8 UPDATES The Center of Learning The name may have changed, but the students who tutor at the Center remain dedicated to helping others. The Oakton Writing Center is a professional student-run center where students receive friendly, quality assistance on writing for all classes and levels from trained tutors. Our mission is to guide students through the writing process to help students become more confident thinkers and writers and to provide lasting writing skills to the best of of our abilities. This is the mission with which the Oakton Writing Center (OWC) was first founded in January 2010 by a small group of students and two teachers. Starting out with a mere idea, these dedicated individuals turned their vision into reality through grueling days of planning and training over the first semester holiday. Due to the Writing Center s success, tutor training soon turned into an Advanced Composition class mandatory for all OWC tutors. For three years, the OWC operated out of small classrooms, serving students after school and during lunches and Cougar Times. Then in late 2012, Katie Clark, a second year tutor, came up with the idea for the Student Learning Center (SLC). The SLC was a science and math version of the Writing Center, consisting of tutors from the math and science honor societies. The SLC used the Oakton Writing Center s classroom and operated during one Cougar Time. Katie graduated in 2013 but left the Writing Center with a new sense of purpose. Today, the Oakton Writing Center, renamed as The Center for Writing and Learning is located in the back of the Oakton library and has evolved into a center of learning for all students of all grades for all subjects. It is open all Cougar Times, A & B lunch on Monday and Tuesday, C & D lunch on Wednesday and Thursday, and Collaboration Wednesdays. Tutors of all subjects are available and range from sophomores to seniors. What began as a center composed exclusively of writing tutors enrolled in the Advanced Composition class now features student tutors from almost all honor societies. When asked why she believed the OWC was necessary, Ms. Blankenship, one of the original teacher founders, commented, I think it s extremely important that the power and potential of students is given space and time to take flight. Students are much more knowledgeable and so much more capable than we give them credit. The Center is a way to showcase the amazing abilities of Oakton students that aren t always seen or acknowledged and [creates] a space for students to help each other learn in a positive, student-directed atmosphere. Students in the Advanced Composition class now are trained in the beginning of the year to tutor writing and run The Center, which continues for the rest of the year. Students are divided into four teams: Management, Publications and Marketing, Special Programs, and OWL (Oakton Writes and Learns). They collaborate to communicate with teachers, students and the entire Oakton Community. Every October, Advanced Composition students attend the Secondary School Writing Center conference at George Mason University which is attended by over 300 local area high school writing center student tutors. This year, fourteen Oakton tutors presented at the conference, sharing their observations and advice with other high school tutors based on their experiences at The Center. Since its opening in 2010, the OWC has held 3517 tutoring sessions. During this school year, the Center has had 347 tutoring sessions in the first quarter. Of these, 218 consist of English tutoring, 24 of science tutoring, 29 of math tutoring, and 73 of other subjects - a huge increase from the 23 non-english sessions from the school year. In a possible reflection of the OWC s effectiveness, scores of Standards of Learning English assessments at Oakton HS have improved in the past few years while the assessments themselves have become harder. Tutees have had an overwhelmingly positive response. One tutee writes on her exit survey, I particularly enjoyed the way the tutors welcomed others and [were] available for all that asked. The tutor gave wonderful advice and helped me with my essay thoroughly, from the beginning to the end. She gave me a lot of time and help that my teacher is too busy to give to only me. In this response, the tutee succinctly sums up many of the reasons why peer tutoring is so valuable. Center tutor Eric Lim explains why he became a peer tutor, saying, Though I initially joined the class for the college transcript now I feel like I make a difference in [my tutees ] lives. Peer tutoring is meaningful because you take away the number-focused culture of education and shift it towards an appreciation of learning. Anee Nguyen, also a Center tutor, adds, I became a tutor because I like helping people and this is a way to reach out to the greater Oakton community. Peer tutoring is not as intimidating and is more comfortable [than being tutored by a teacher]. In four short school years, the Center has become an integral part of the Oakton identity. However, it has far to go before achieving its goal of changing the learning culture. In order to move forward, all of the Oakton HS community has to work together. We hope for the PTSA s support in our endeavors. To find out more about what we do, please us at [email protected]. PAGE 8

9 UPDATES Oakton High School Student Earns Poetry Honor Aline Dolinh, a sophomore at Oakton High School, was recognized at the National Book Festival as the Southeast region representative of the National Student Poets Class of Oakton High School is a Fairfax County public school. The award recognizes one student from each of the five regions in the country, and is sponsored by the President s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Dolinh was eligible for the honor after winning the Gold Key award in the regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards earlier this year. Five of her poems appear in the ceremony program. As the National Student Poet for the southeast region, Dolinh will participate in a region-wide community service project designed to promote literacy awareness. She is particularly interested in raising awareness of the way poetry is taught in schools. Dolinh has been writing poetry as long as she could read and won her first poetry award in first grade for five haikus she submitted to a haiku contest at the National Kite Festival. Although she has won numerous awards for her poetry, this is her first award at such a high level. Dolinh traveled to New York in October to be honored by the Academy of American Poets. Dolinh is also available to speak to area clubs and organizations (both adults and children s) about her experience. If you or your organization would like to invite her to speak, please follow this link: PAGE 9
