2 Glossary of Terms VCE: Victorian Certificate of Education Units 1 and 2: subjects mainly studied at Year 11 in semesters one and two. Units 3 and 4: subjects mainly studies at Year 12 in semesters one and two, but may also be studied in Year 11. VCAA: Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority VCE VET: Vocational Education and Training. These are Courses such as Engineering or Hospitality; contribute to a student s VCE. VTAC: Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre
3 Minimum requirements for the award of the VCE Satisfactory completion of at least 16 units in total which must include: 3 units in English or Eng Literature at least one at Unit 3 or 4 level At least three sequences of Unit 3 and 4 studies other than English
4 Glossary of Terms Outcomes: what a student must know and be able to do in order to satisfactorily complete a unit SACs: School assessed coursework; school based assessment; reported as a grade for Units 3 and 4. SATs: School Assessed Tasks which are set by the VCAA and assessed by teachers, e.g. a piece of artwork or a media production.
5 Glossary of Terms Satisfactory Completion: The school decision that a student has passed outcomes for a VCE unit. Reported on with an S or an N GAT: General Achievement Test
6 Assessment of VCE Studies Year 11 studies (Units 1 & 2) All internally Assessed Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) S or N 50% minimum grade requirement for S Mt Scopus College Graded (A+ A, B+ )
7 Assessment of Unit 3/4 Studies Internal: SACs School Assessed Coursework Worth between 35% - 50% External: Exams ALL have a written November Exam. Some have oral/performance exams Study Score
8 Glossary of Terms Study Score: a score from zero to 50 which shows how a student has performed in a VCE Unit 3/4 study, relative to all students enrolled in that same study in a result year.
9 Glossary of Terms ATAR: the ATAR refers to the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank used by Universities to select students for courses. The ATAR is calculated by the VTAC (not the VCAA) on the scaled scores for: English or English Lit or EAL and the next 3 best scores and 10% of the 5 th score and 10% of the 6 th score (if applicable)
