Students learn to divide words into their component parts recognizing the basic combining forms. They learn suffixes and prefixes and their meanings. Emphasis is placed on learning the pathology of the nine body s. Course Objectives: The goal of this course is for the student to develop a medical vocabulary encompassing disease processes, diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests, abbreviations, drugs and treatment modalities. The student will be able to read and write medical terms accurately and use them appropriately. Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: Break medical terms down into their component parts and define them. Write medical terms when given a medical definition. Generate a basic medical document using medical terms accurately. Use and define medical abbreviations. Define/briefly describe major disease conditions. Describe diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests and be able to correlate them to a disease condition.

2 AHIMA: This course supports the body of knowledge for medical terminology as defined by the Professional Certificate Approval Program (PCAP). Required Textbooks/Materials: The Language of Medicine, 11 th Edition by Davi-Ellen Chabner. Publisher: Saunders Access to a working computer with Internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, speakers/headphones, and printing capability. Technology Requirements and Proficiency: 1. The learner will be able to access the course materials using an Internet connection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 2. Some documents that will be used in the course are in the Adobe Acrobat, pdf file format. If you do not already have the Acrobat Reader installed on your machine, or you do not know if you do, go to to download the free Acrobat Reader. 3. Make sure you have the latest version of JAVA installed on your machine. If you do not, go to to download the free software. 4. Never Panic! If you are having a problem, or something is not clear, it is safe to assume others are facing similar challenges, and together we can solve it. Learning with technology can be empowering but it can also be extremely frustrating when it doesn t work as it should or you cannot get an immediate answer. Keep phone numbers of tech support handy and do not wait until you are extremely frustrated! Grading Policy: In order for the learner to prove competency in the objectives of the course, he or she must receive a passing grade of C (75%) or higher for the course. The grading scale is as follows: 100% - 94% A 93% - 90% A- 89%-88% B+ 87% - 83% B 82% - 80% B- 79% - 78% C+ 77% - 75% C Minimum accepted passing score 74% - 70% C- 69% - 67% D+ 66% - 63% D 62% - 60% D- 59% - 0% F

3 Assessment Areas/Composition of Final Grade: Calculation of the final grade is as follows: Assignments/Discussion Board 10% of overall grade for the course Quizzes 10% of overall grade for the course First Online Quarter Exam 20% of overall grade for the course Proctored Midterm Examination 20% of overall grade for the course Second Online Quarter Exam 20% of overall grade for the course Proctored Final Examination 20% of overall grade for the course Total 100% Extra Credit: There is no extra credit for this course. Late Work: No assignment will be accepted more than two weeks past the announced deadline or after the last day of the current semester. Assignments received past the due date but before two weeks will only receive half credit. Quizzes/Exams are posted over a week time period allowing ample time to complete. Quizzes/Exams cannot be made up at a later date. Attendance Policy: This is not a self-paced course. Reasonable deadlines have been set to insure that you have adequate time to complete all assignments, quizzes, exams within the current semester. Active participating in this class is an essential, unmistakably important aspect of this online course. The expectation of the instructor is that students will log on a minimum of four times every seven days and spend at least 8-10 hours a week on the course. Your full participation on a weekly basis is not only a requirement; it is an essential aspect of the online course process. Participation is defined as not only reading and doing course materials, but making substantial, thoughtful posts through the discussion board. Academic Honesty/Plagiarism: Any student caught cheating on a test or assignment will fail that assignment or test. This includes the student doing the cheating and any other student who is found to be willingly sharing information. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in failing the assignment or test in which it took place. Instructor Availability: Instructor availability will be posted in the course website under Instructor. Students can expect return of messages and phone calls within 24 hours (this excludes holidays and weekends). However, ALL communication should take place inside the course under the Discussion Board in the Virtual Office and not through (unless it is confidential, an emergency or has nothing to do with the course at hand).

4 Academic Support/Advisement: Available to all student through the services provided in the ACES Center; extension 209. Inquire the center regarding hours of operations and specific subjects for which tutors are available. In addition, some subject area specialist tutors are available for courses through specific departments. Ask your instructor if specialized tutors are available for your individual course.
