Davis, New York Course Description: This course covers the role and responsibilities of a medical assistant working with a physician or health care provider in a medical clinic. The course will include documentation, safety measures, obtaining a medical history and patient education. Other topics covered include measuring vital signs, preparing the examination room and the patient for the exam, performing basic clinical procedures such as respiratory care and EKG. Life span, cultural diversity and psychosocial differences will be discussed. Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

2 Describe the structural organization of the human body, describe body planes/directional terms/quadrants, and cavities, and list the major organs in each body system Identify, analyze and describe implications for treatment related to pathology of each body system Demonstrate accurate measurement of vital signs. Demonstrate continued working knowledge of cultural diversity. Educate the patient in health promotion and prevention. Define the infection cycle, including the infectious agent, reservoir, susceptible host, disease transmission, portal of entry and exit. Define Asepsis. Define Infection control procedures. List major types of infectious agents. Define Standard precautions Demonstrate basic knowledge of medical terminology. Demonstrate accurate use of medical abbreviations when charting on medical progress notes. Perform patient screening following established protocols. Demonstrate competency in interviewing a patient and completing a history, maintaining confidentiality. Create a problem-oriented medical record and a source oriented medical record. Define the following as practiced within an ambulatory care setting: medical asepsis, surgical asepsis Nutrition 1. Describe dietary nutrients including: carbohydrates, fat, protein, minerals, electrolytes, vitamins, fiber and water 2. Define the function of dietary supplements

3 3. Identify the special dietary needs for: weight control, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, lactose sensitivity, glute-free and food allergies V. Concepts of Effective Communication VI. 6. Define coaching a patient as it relates to: health maintenance, disease prevention, community resources and adaptation relevant to individual patient needs 9. Identify medical terms labeling the word parts 10. Define medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems 16. Differentiate between subjective and objective information 7. Identify resources and adaptations that are required based on individual needs (e.g. culture and environment, developmental life stage, language, and physical obstacles to communication) 10. Diagram medical terms, labeling word parts 11. Define both medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems Administrative Functions 5. Identify methods of organizing the patient s medical record based on: Problem-oriented medical record (POMR) and source-oriented medical record (SOMR) X. Legal Implications 11. Describe the process in compliance reporting: unsafe activities, errors in patient care, incident reports 12. Describe compliance with public health statutes: abuse, neglect and exploitation; wounds of violence XII. Protective Practices 2. Identify safety techniques that can be used in responding to accidental exposure to: blood, other body fluids and chemicals Competency (Psychomotor) I. Anatomy & Physiology 1. Measure and record: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, height, weight, length (infant), head circumference (infant) and pulse oximetry 3. Develop a current list of community resources related to patients healthcare 10. Facilitate referrals to community resources in the role of a patient navigator 11. Demonstrate empathy Policies and Requirements: Grading is based on the following percentage scale. Students are expected to achieve a C (75%) or greater in order to successfully complete this course.

5 = A =A =B =B =B =C =C Minimum accepted passing score 74 or below=c-69% - 67% D+ 66% - 63% D 62% - 60% D- 59% - 0% F Assessment Areas/Composition of final Grade: Calculation of the final grade is based on the following: Assessment Areas Weight of Grade Assignments 10 % Tests/Quizzes 40% Dress Code Compliance 10% Participation/Lab/Projects 40% Competencies Pass/Fail Totals 100% **Competencies addressed are on a Pass/Fail basis they need to be completed at 100% to pass the course** Successful completion of a competency is defined as the student completing all of the core points during competency evaluation with 3 attempts as established by the individual instructor s expectations. Extra Credit: Extra credit may be available for this course but it is under the discretion of the instructor. Late Work: Late work (1-2 days after due date) will be marked down 10%. Any work received after 2 days will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero. Early work is always acceptable. If you know you will have a conflict, arrange to get the work done ahead of time. Students must be in class for tests, quizzes and presentations. Students are not allowed to take exams, quizzes or do presentations after the scheduled date. If you know you will be absent for one of these, you must notify me to schedule an alternative date.

6 Attendance Policy: Per college policy, attendance will be taken each class period and reported at the end of the semester. If you must miss class, , text, or call me. If it is possible for work to be made up (most work in class cannot be made up), I will assist you if the absence is due to serious illness or emergency. You are responsible for material covered in class and all assignments regardless of your other responsibilities. If Gogebic Community College is closed due to weather, we will not meet. If I will miss a class, I will announce my absence ahead of time if possible. Otherwise, GCC will announce the cancellation prior to our scheduled meeting time. Excessive absences are defined as more than 1/16 th of the total class hours. Excessive absences are defined as more than 1/16 th of the total class hours. Each unexcused absence over 1/16 th of the course will result in 10% being subtracted from the next scheduled test. Each subsequent absence will result in another 10% deduction. Being late is viewed as disrespectful to fellow classmates and your instructor. A 5% deduction will be assessed from the following test beginning with the 3 rd tardy. Five percent will continue to be deducted for every tardy after that. Academic Honesty/Plagiarism: Any student caught cheating on a test or assignment will fail that assignment or test. This includes the student doing the cheating and any other student who is found to be willingly sharing information. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in failing the assignment or test in which it took place. Academic Support/Advisement: Available to all students through the services provided in the ACES Center: extension 209. Inquire at the center regarding hours of operations and specific subjects for which tutors are available. In addition, some subject area specialist tutors are available for you individual course. Advising for Medical Assistant students is available through the Allied Health Department. Classroom Community: In a classroom, each person s behavior affects the others present. You will be expected to show courtesy and respect for others. Class starts on time and you will be expected to be on time and stay for the entire class period. Cell phones MUST be turned off in class. Please do not come to class if you are ill and please do not bring children to class. The following behaviors are prohibited: Verbal attack on the person, integrity or moral character of another.

7 Disparaging remarks about or derogatory language aimed at another s group of origin or affinity (E>G> age, gender, health status, physical or mental abilities, race culture, sexual orientation, ethnicity, political philosophy, social views, religion). Any behavior manifesting direct or implied sexual harassment.
