1 Gogebic Community College Early Childhood Education Program LANGUAGE AND LITERACY FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Fall 2015 COURSE INFORMATION Course Number: ECE 240 Course Credit and Contact Hours: 3 credit hours/3 contact hours Course Dates: 1/26/ /9/2015 Seminars: Wednesdays from 6:00-9:00 pm Course Description: This class will help students become familiar with teaching strategies and techniques that support the language and literacy development of young children. The topics of study will include: language development, reading readiness, print rich environments, storytelling through puppets and flannel boards, and children s literature. Students will become proficient at helping children develop both expressive and receptive language skills. COURSE OBJECTIVES AND STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Course Objectives Students will evaluate various methods of teaching language and literature. Students will apply developmentally appropriate teaching methods to language and literature in the classroom. Students will explore how to incorporate language and literature instruction into small group, large group, work time, and the classroom environment. Student Achievement of Outcomes Will Be Assessed and Validated Via: Quizzes & Exams Assignments In Class Participation Quizzes & Exams Assignments In Class Participation Quizzes & Exams Assignments In Class Participation TOPICAL OUTLINE Building a foundation for reading Building a foundation for writing The importance of literacy-rich activities and environments Integrating literacy into the early childhood setting Developing oral language Reading aloud to children Building phonological awareness Dramatic play and literacy The book and writing area Literacy beyond the book and writing area Helping parents build literacy skills COURSE METHODOLOGY Participation: Students will complete various in class assignments. Class attendance and participation cannot be made up if you miss class. You will not receive participation points for classes you miss. Readings: Students will be assigned weekly readings from the textbook and handouts.

3 Quizzes: Students will take a weekly quiz. With the exception of the first week, quizzes are to be submitted through Moodle by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays (before class begins). Exams: Students will take a mid-term and final exam in class. Assignments: Students will complete four written assignments over the course of the semester. EVAULATION METHODS Evaluation Details Individual Point Total Point Value Value Participation 15 weeks, points 15 points for each 225 based on in class assignments week of participation Quizzes 15 quizzes, one for 15 points for each 225 each week quiz Exams 1 mid-term and points each 400 final Assignments 4 assignments 100 points each 400 Class Attendance: Class attendance is required unless the student has an emergency or prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Assignment Due Dates: Assignments must be submitted on their due date, unless previously arranged with the instructor. Assignments turned in late will be graded down 10% for each week late. Grading Scale: % = A 93-90% = A % = B % = B 83-80% = B % = C % = C 73-70% = C % = D % = D 63-60% = D- 59-0% = F Plagiarism and Cheating Policy: Plagiarism or cheating on papers and tests will be given a failing grade and be reported to the Dean. Second offence will receive dismissal from the class.

4 Dishonesty of any kind, cheating on examinations or any assigned work may be dealt with in any manner deemed suitable by the instructor, including the recording of a failing grade for the course. Cheating in examinations may also result in the student appearing before the Conduct Committee and possible suspension from school if circumstances warrant. ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND DISABILITY STATEMENT Academic Support: Support is available for all students through the services provided in each campus Learning Resources Centers. Inquire at each center regarding hours of operations and specific subjects for which tutors are available. In addition, some subject area specialist tutors are available for courses through specific departments. Ask your instructor if specialized tutors are available for your individual course.
