5 What are children doing online? Online Gaming i. Playing games against friends and strangers. ii. Chatting to friends and strangers using microphone headsets. iii. Exchanging contact details. iv. Playing games unsuitable for their age? Apply some common sense, but some 18 certificate games are clearly unsuitable for 12 and 13 year olds!
6 What are children doing online? IM (Instant Messaging) and chat rooms i. Talking to their friends or strangers online ii. IM on Facebook, Google+ and mobiles. iii. MSN, Yahoo messenger, Kik, WhatsApp iv. Sharing photographs and videos as instant messages e.g. Snapchat, Instagram, Vine v. Sexting via IM or SMS
7 What are children doing online? Facebook / Twitter / Google+ i. Sharing photos. ii. Adding and collecting friends. iii. Using instant messaging. iv. Creating profiles. v. Checking themselves in. vi. Updating their status

9 What are children doing online? Music Streaming and downloading i. Downloading music legally ii. Downloading music illegally (Bit torrent) iii. Uploading music iv. Streaming music (Spotify, Google Music etc.)
10 What are children doing online? Blogging and micro blogging (Twitter, Wordpress) i. Tweeting ii. Writing a blog - A blog (a blend of the term web log)is a type of website or part of a website. Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reversechronological order.
11 What are children doing online? Webcam i. Talking to people on webcams using IM, Facebook or Google+. ii. This could be friends or strangers. iii. Using Chat Roulette type sites. iv. Skype
12 What are children doing online? These can be fantastic tools but we must be aware of the dangers.

14 What are the risks? Sharing personal information i. Online profiles / Twitter / Facebook ii. Sharing too much information with friends and strangers. iii. Address, phone numbers, addresses and locations. iv. Photos and status updates.
15 What are the risks? Cyber Bullying and Trolling i. Bullying someone using technology. ii. It can start off as a joke and spiral out of control. iii. Fraping (posting on FB or changing their page when they leave themselves logged in) iv. It can be very malicious and effectively pursue children each time they are online v. Adults and young people think that because it s online, it gives then anonymity.
16 Ask.fm is a particular concern An anonymous question and answer site that is very popular with teenagers as they perceive it as an adult-free zone The sustained level of abuse directed at some young people has led to the site being linked with several teen suicides Daily Mirror, 19/8/2013
17 What are the risks? Sexting i. Sending rude / explicit photos via , social networking sites and mobiles. ii. Sending videos or exposing themselves on webcam iii. Once they have been sent they can be put online or shared with anybody. iv. Snapchat is a particular problem as the photos disappear after a few seconds, but can be screen grabbed v. It is against the law if you have a explicit photo of someone under the age of 18 even if they are not 18 themselves. It does not matter if they are a boyfriend or girlfriend.
18 What are the risks? Blogging and Digital footprint i. Exposing too much information online ii. Expressing opinions that may get them into trouble iii. Writing a diary or description of an event that maybe online for many years iv. Half of employers have rejected a job applicant for inappropriate content on their Facebook page Source: Telegraph, 11//1/2010
19 What are the risks? Accessing unsuitable websites i. Pornographic websites ii. Chat roulette style websites iii. Illegal film websites iv. Anything you deem as a parent to be unsuitable v. Many of these can be accessed using smart phones
20 What are the risks? Encounters with strangers / offenders i. Young people can chat freely to strangers ii. They could arrange to meet in the real world iii. The stranger may have lied about their age iv. The young person may not bring a parent and meet the stranger alone v. Non-contact sexual abuse A 2010 film called Trust covers this in detail.

22 What can we do and parents and teachers? In School i. School AUP (acceptable use policy) both in and out of school ii. Two assemblies so far this year on the topic across all year groups iii. Staying safe online lessons during year 7 ICT iv. A 7 week unit of work during year 9 Life Long Learning v. Filtered internet access at school
23 What can we do and parents and teachers? At home i. Be aware of what young people are doing online ii. Be friends with your children on FB etc. Be aware they can restrict what you can see. iii. Talk to your children, ask what they are doing iv. Use the parental controls on the operating system v. Speak to your ISP about how you can filter internet access vi. Use your computers operating system to restrict the time the internet can be accessed by your child
24 What can we do and parents and teachers? At home i. Be aware that smart phones can access the internet using 3G and WiFi Network Provider Filtering ii. Use your judgement (should my son / daughter have a computer in their room?) iii. Access to the CEOP thinkuknow.co.uk website iv. Rules for mobile/computer usage.

30 Social Media Privacy Social Media sites make money by selling information to advertisers they rely on being able to access as much of your child s information as possible. You need to talk to your child and review their settings regularly!.
31 Reduce availability (switch-off times) Restrict access (parental control software) Increase their resilience to harmful and inappropriate material (education and discussion)
32 Kids don t need protection, we need guidance. If you protect us, you are making us weaker. We don t go through all the trial and error necessary to learn what we need to survive on our own don t fight our battles for us, just give us assistance when we need it (Byron review)
