8 Statistics Half (50%) of all children aged 5-15 have a mobile phone 3% of 5-7s and around one in eight 8-11s (13%) own a smartphone There are over 1 billion registered users of Facebook An estimated 7 ½ million of these users are under 13 25% of 7-10 year olds are on Facebook (CEOP) The number of text messages sent every day exceeds the total population of the planet

18 YouTube Launched in America in 2005, YouTube has quickly developed into a global platform that allows billions of people to discover, watch and share videos online, while also providing a forum for people to connect globally with each other.

19 YouTube With 72 hours of content uploaded to YouTube every minute and 4 billion views a day, there is something for everyone to explore. YouTube has recently launched some new tools. Here is a quick overview of these new tools, in order to make YouTube a safer environment

20 YouTube Guidelines, Reporting and Safety In order to ensure that users experience on YouTube is enjoyable and safe, the site contains the following features:1.community guidelines which explain to users how they should behave within the YouTube community, and the consequences for disobeying these.2.reporting mechanisms which ensure that an array of tools is on hand for all users to mark content that is inappropriate or illegal.3.additional information is also provided in the Safety Centre and the Help Centre which help users to address issues that they may encounter online.

Only 7% of parents think their child has received such comments.

37 PART 1 What can parents do?

38 Prevention is the best way DO NOT STOP YOUR CHILD USING THE INTERNET Firstly this doesn t work, but it drives their use underground and they are then not able to talk to you if they get in trouble Secondly the internet is the greatest ever single invention that has the potential to make the world a better place. It s already more significant than the inventions of the printing press, radio, telephone and TV put together!

39 What you can do Commerce Install software to protect your computer s security Be careful which sites the rest of the family visit Use a family address for shopping and online forms Use the free technology: pop-up blockers & SPAM filters; and your good judgement: don t reply to SPAM! Check sites for extra security (padlock/https)

40 What you can do Content Talk to your children about what to do if they do come across something unpleasant and teach them to be critical Use child-friendly search engines or set a search filter Encourage them to use browser tools Bookmarks & History Install filtering but don t rely on it Find appropriate sites to visit and try not to overreact lots of inappropriate content viewed accidentally

41 What you can do Contact Get involved with your children online and encourage balanced use set time limits Make sure they know who to talk to if they feel uncomfortable Talk about the consequences of giving out personal info or making information public Keep the computer in a family room Agree rules as a family meeting up

42 SMART rules SAFE Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information including full name and address - to people who you don t trust online. MEETING Meeting up with someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parent s/carer s permission and even then only when they can be present. ACCEPTING Accepting s, IM messages or opening files from people you don t know can be dangerous they may contain viruses or nasty messages! RELIABLE Someone online may be lying about who they are, and information you find on the internet may not be true. Check information and advice on other websites, in books or ask someone who may know. TELL Tell your parent/carer or teacher if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or you or someone you know is being cyberbullied.
