2 Blackboard Instant Messaging Once the program is launched, students and instructors can easily see who s online and available so they can instantly communicate with other students or instructors. Blackboard Instant Messaging features include: - Instant messaging to find others and interact on demand - Desktop video conferencing and VoIP audio for meetings - Whiteboard with built-in learning objects and templates - Application sharing and queued chat for tutoring and online office hours - Universal accessibility and advanced privacy features Installing Blackboard Instant Messaging: New Users In order to use Blackboard Instant Messaging, you need to create a Blackboard IM account and download the Blackboard Instant Messaging software. Create a Blackboard Instant Messaging Account Your Blackboard Instant Messaging ID is used for logging in, managing your account, and allowing users who are not in your classes to contact you. This ID is unique and does not need to match your institution s systems. If you are associated with two or more institutions that use Blackboard Instant Messaging, you can use the same Blackboard Instant Messaging ID for both. In order to create the Blackboard Instant Messaging account, you must access the Blackboard IM registration page through Blackboard Learn at UNT. 1. Launch your web browser and go to 2. On the My Institution tab, find the module for Blackboard IM. If you do not see it, click on Add Module button to add the module to your My Institution page. (See screenshot below.) 2

3 3. The link in the module will take you to the Blackboard IM registration page where you will create your Blackboard Instant Messaging ID. Complete the registration form and click the Submit button (For additional instructions on creating your Blackboard IM account, please visit the Online User s Guide). 3

4 Download and Install Blackboard Instant Messaging Download and install the Blackboard IM client after creating your Blackboard IM account. You may perform this step immediately after creating your account. Note: You can install Blackboard IM on as many computers as you wish, making it easy to keep in touch with friends and classmates, even if you are not at your primary computer. Blackboard IM System Requirements The minimum system requirements for Blackboard IM are as follows: Windows XP+ or Mac OS MB RAM (256 MB recommended) An Internet connection at 56 kbps or higher Sound card (for Audio Calling) Speakers and microphone for audio calling (USB headset with integrated microphone recommended) USB or integrated webcam (for Video Calling) Installation Directions - Windows 1. Log in to the Blackboard IM Settings page using your Blackboard IM ID and password. o If you just created your account, you may already be logged in to the Blackboard IM Settings page. o If you did not just create your account, or you need to download and install Blackboard IM again, go to and sign in using your Blackboard IM ID and password. 2. In the Download section, click the Windows 7, Vista, XP link. The Blackboard IM installer downloads to your hard drive. 3. Double-click the Blackboard IM Setup file that was downloaded. The installer launches. 4

5 4. Click OK. 5. Click Next. 6. Review the license agreement and click I Agree. 7. Select whether you wish to install Desktop and QuickLaunch Shortcuts. 8. Click Next. 9. Select where you wish to install Blackboard IM. 10. Click Install. Blackboard IM installs and a confirmation screen opens. 11. Select whether you wish to run the program right away. 12. Click Finish. To Download and Install Blackboard IM for Macintosh 1. Log in to the Blackboard IM Settings page using your Blackboard IM ID and password. o If you just created your account, you may already be logged in to the Blackboard IM Settings page. o If you did not just create your account, or you need to download and install Blackboard IM again, go tohttp://blackboardim.com and sign in using your Blackboard IM ID and password. 2. In the Download section, click the Mac OS X link. The Blackboard IM installer downloads to your hard drive and the End User License Agreement opens. 5

6 3. Review the license agreement and click Agree. The disk image opens. 4. Drag the Blackboard IM icon to the Applications folder icon. 5. Launch Blackboard IM from your Applications folder. 6
