1 Winter Park City Hall Commission Chambers Flags on Dias (From right to left) State of Florida Flag The flag consists of the Florida State seal in the middle. It also has the red Saint Andrews Cross. The seal has the motto in God we trust and a Seminole woman on the shore at sunset spreading hibiscus flowers. You can also see the state tree, a sabal palm with steamboat in the background. 1

2 Pine Tree This flag was used from and was flown by the Massachusetts Navy in April The tree was a symbol of New England and was one of many Pine Tree flags flown in Massachusetts. 2

3 Gadsden Inspired by Benjamin Franklin s Join or Die political cartoon, the Gadsden Flag materialized in It is unknown who originally said or wrote Don t Tread On Me The snake symbolized American Unity and Independence. If you step on a snake, prepare for the ramifications of your actions. 3

4 Bunker Hill This flag supposedly was flown at the battle of Bunker Hill. The red cross is known as St. George s Cross. There is also a pine tree in the upper left corner. The pine tree was said to represent freedom to New Englanders. However it was colored blue by mistake. This flag is similar to the British flag because New England was still loyal to the crown, they just wanted more freedom 4

5 Star Spangled Banner Contains 15 five- pointed stars. The flag inspired the poem by Francis Scott Key after the attack on Fort McHenry which later became the national anthem. The two added stars represent the addition of Vermont and Kentucky into the union. 5

6 King s Colours The flag contains the red cross of Saint George along with the white and blue flag of Saint Andrew. The King s Colours was the predecessor to the modern day British flag dating back to Although both flags are similar it differs from the current British flag in that the flag (Diagonal red cross) of Saint Patrick is not included. 6

7 Betsy Ross Designed during the American Revolution, the five pointed stars symbolize the 13 original colonies. This is the first flag that does not show any incorporation of the United Kingdom s flag. 7

8 Bennington The 76 symbolizes the year 1776, the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. There are 13 seven-pointed stars around the 76 in a semicircle. This symbolizes the original 13 colonies. The Bennington flag also differs from today s flag in that the white stripes are the outermost stripes unlike today s flag where the red are the outermost stripes. It was used at the Battle of Plattsburg in 1814, which was a turning point of the War of

9 Grand Union The first unofficial flag of the United States. This flag was greatly used during the revolution by colonists. Many however mistook the flag as a representation of loyalty to King George. 9

10 Continental Flag The first flag to completely eliminate any representation of England and used by the American troops. The tree symbolizes the love of the tree filled land America had to offer. 10

11 City of Winter Park Flag The City of Winter Park Flag was officially adopted in October This is the first time in the city s history it had a flag to fly proudly with our state and American flags on flag poles throughout our city. A public design-the-flag contest was launched in June 2011 and what you see here is what was approved. The royal blue stripes signify our lakes, green signifies our parks, sustainability and wealth, and the peacock is proudly showcased in the center of the flag as the image from our city seal. 11

12 USA Flag The 50 stars represent all of the states of America. The horizontal stripes represent the 13 original colonies adopted into the Union. The official colors are White, Old glory Red and Old Glory Blue. The blue stands for loyalty, devotion, truth, justice, and friendship; red symbolizes courage, zeal, and fervency, while white denotes purity and rectitude of conduct. 12

13 Red Ensign or Colonial Red Ensign Flown by the royal British Navy starting in the 17 th century. Also known as Queen Anne s flag it flew in the American colonies before the American Revolution. This was the first national flag of the English colonies, and Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown under this flag. 13

14 NO LONGER ON THE DIAS St George s Flag The flag contains the symbolic red cross of St. George. It was used during the medieval era. The cross was used to identify the French and English troops in the Kings Crusade This interpretation of the Flag of Saint George as "God's Flag" was carried to America by early members of the Church of England and Anglican community in early American history. Rather than representing English nationality, and instead recognized in the United States as "God's Flag. Tree City USA Tree City USA is a national program where a city needs to meet four core standards to receive a flag. The four core standards are: 1. A Tree Board or Department 2. A Tree Care Ordinance 3. A Community Forestry Program With an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita 4. An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation Winter Park has received 20 consecutive Tree City USA Growth Awards for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program. 14
