4 Update over the Internet Update over the Internet Instead of using the Windows 8.1 Setup DVD, download the free Windows 8.1 Update program from the Windows Store to update your system. Your current Windows settings, personal files, and some applications will be kept. Make sure to back up important data to an external hard drive prior to the update. 10 Clean install using the DVD Insert the Windows 8.1 Setup DVD. Wait until it runs automatically. If the DVD does not run automatically, double click setup.exe. Select Go online to install updates now (recommended) and press Next. Enter the product key included in the DVD and press Next. Read the End Users License Agreement. Check I agree and press Next. Select Nothing and start installing Windows 8.1. After the installation is completed and your system will be rebooted, follow the instructions displayed on the screen. Then log in to Windows 8.1. Download SW Update program and install necessary drivers and applications.
