1 SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAMS 2016

2 Get a head start on college and set yourself up for success. Our summer programs for incoming freshmen will provide you with opportunities to meet other students, gain leadership skills, and familiarize yourself with Ball State University all before your first day of classes. Challenge yourself, make friends, and have fun as you prepare for your first year on campus. We offer six unique experiences designed to meet the wide range of student s interests. Please consider signing up for the EXCEL Summer Mentor Program, the Cardinal Leadership and Service Seminar (C.L.A.S.S.), Early Start, Career Connections, or our Outdoor Pursuit experiences. 3 Frequently Asked Questions How can I learn more about these programs? During your two day summer orientation there is a presentation focused specifically on these experiences. We will provide more in-depth information about general outcomes of participation and specifics about each of the programs. You can also go to bsu.edu/summerprograms. Do any of these provide academic credit? Yes, Early Start is the only program that provides academic course credit. This program specifically engages students in a classroom setting with a faculty member leading the course. Can I participate in more than one program? Yes, you can! The two Outdoor Pursuit programs and EXCEL occur prior to Accelerate, C.L.A.S.S., Career Connections, and Early Start. We encourage you to look at dates in this brochure to ensure you are signing up for programs that do not overlap. Where will I stay during the program? If you are attending any program other than one of the Outdoor Pursuit programs, you will be able to move into your permanent, first year residence hall. If you are a commuter student, we will provide housing for you. How do I register for one of these programs? To sign up, simply complete the registration form at bsu.edu/ summerprograms and either pay online or contact the Office of Student Life about other payment options. You will receive additional information once your registration and payment have been received. How much does it cost? The cost of programs ranges from $65.00 to $ The cost includes lodging, meals, and activities. 4 Outdoor Pursuits Are you ready for an outdoor adventure that you will never forget? During these Outdoor Pursuits trips, you will meet and connect with other new students, learn more about your upcoming college experience, and enjoy some exciting outdoor recreational activities. It s the perfect way to jumpstart your life as a student at Ball State University. Participants in all outdoor adventure programs are responsible for meals and snacks during travel to and from the sites and any souvenirs. West Virginia Whitewater Expedition Join us on this West Virginia Outdoor Adventure. Spend three nights camping, making life-long friends, and preparing meals around a campfire. Activities will include a mud obstacle course, day hiking, and a full day rafting on the Lower New River through the 1,000-foot deep gorge lined with jaw dropping views of the West Virginia Mountains. Participants will also enjoy swimming, sliding, and jumping at the spring-fed mountain lake water park. The lake offers something for every adventure level including 40 foot waterslides, water trampolines, and a zip-line. Don t miss out! Space is limited to 20 students. Program fee: $350 (includes travel, activities, meals on site, and camping) Program dates: July 11-14, 2016 Registration deadline: Friday, July 1, 2016 Program Highlights Full day of rafting on the New River, West Virginia Local hiking with breathtaking views Afternoon Mud Obstacle Course 2 Daily access to the spring-fed water park

5 Smoky National Park and Rafting Your adventure will begin with a meet & greet at the Climbing Wall located in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center on campus. During this time you will engage in climbing, group activities, as well as a pizza party! You will also have the opportunity to stay in a BSU residence halls to get the full college experience. The following morning you will hit the road and head to North Carolina where you will spend three nights camping in the Smoky Mountains, preparing meals around a campfire, and exploring the natural wonders of the Great Smoky National Park and its surrounding areas. You will have the option to either day hike a short portion of the Appalachian Trail to Charlies Bunion where participants will experience panoramic views of the North Carolina Smokies or visit Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The week will conclude with an introductory whitewater rafting trip down one of America s most popular whitewater runs on the Nantahala River. Space is limited to 20 students. Program fee: $275 (includes travel, activities, meals on site, and camping) Program dates: July 25-29, 2016 Registration deadline: Friday, July 15, 2016 Program Highlights An overnight stay on campus Half day of rafting on the Nantahala River, North Carolina Local hiking on the Appalachian Trail Visit Smoky Mountain National Park 3

6 EXCEL Summer Mentor Program EXCEL is a three-day summer program geared toward first-year students of color and first-generation college students. EXCEL features workshops to expose students to common aspects of daily college life. You will learn techniques that will help you focus on your academic and social development. The program offers an opportunity to make new friends and get firsthand experience of college life before classes start. You will be paired with mentor who is a returning student with proven academic and social skills. Mentors will help guide mentees through the social and academic aspects of Ball State. The EXCEL program ends in time to allow you to participate in an additional summer bridge program that will further enhance your pre-college experience. Space is limited to 50 students. Program fee: $65 (include meals, lodging, and activities) Program dates: August 10-13, 2016 Program Highlights Experience a more seamless transition into college Build rapport and connections with mentors who serve as positive role models Get connected with community service organizations in Muncie

7 Cardinal Leadership and Service Seminar (C.L.A.S.S.) During this high impact three-day experience, you will interact with other new students and student leaders in large group discussion, small cluster meetings, and actionpacked projects. There will be ways to learn more about yourself as a leader and reflect on your goals as a Ball State student. You will have the opportunity to practice ways to become engaged in activities you re passionate about and make yourself at home on campus and in the community. C.L.A.S.S. is a Ball State tradition 20 years strong that has helped hundreds of new students to serve in prominent on and off campus leadership roles. Space is limited to 225 students. Program fee: $135 (includes meals, lodging, and evening activities) Program dates: August 14-16, 2016 Program Highlights Engage with student leaders who represent many of our 400+ student organizations on campus Participate in a service project in the Muncie community Celebrate the 20th anniversary by meeting past C.L.A.S.S. participants and mentors 5

8 Early Start Experience a college course with Early Start, a four-day program that includes completing a 1 credit hour seminar of your choice. This is the only summer bridge program option that provides academic credit. Sponsored by University College, these dynamic seminars enable you to interact with other incoming freshmen as you explore various topics under the direction of our expert faculty. Choose one of this year s seminar options listed below. Full descriptions of each are available at bsu.edu/summerprograms. Space is limited to 200 students. Program Highlights Build relationships with faculty and other incoming freshmen Transition into the college learning environment by engaging in small interactive seminars of your choice Participate in group activities and visit campus attractions including the planetarium, art museum, and Christy Woods. A Workshop for Students Looking for a Major College Prep 101: How to Plan and Prepare for the First Year Criminal Justice in the News Elemental: A Sexual Assault Protection Program How to Get What You Want: Achieving Your Life Goals A Multimedia Packed Personal Website Design Workshop POWER into Math Sex & Gender in the Media Television News Program fee: $135 (includes meals, lodging, and evening activities) Program dates: August 14-17,

9 Career Connections Explore your interests, define your path, meet employers and successful alumni, and most importantly, gain a competitive edge! Studies have shown that students coming into college with a defined plan for their major, internships, and career opportunities graduate in four years at a higher rate than their peers! During the Career Connections three-day program career professionals and student leaders will guide you through the creation of an action plan for success that will carry you through graduation and into the world of work. You will also meet fellow freshmen, learn about campus resources and opportunities, and meet with industry leaders and professionals. Space is limited to 30 students. Program fee: $135 (includes meals, lodging, and evening activities) Program dates: August 14-17, 2016 Program Highlights Meet and network with Muncie community members Visit to a local employer on-site in Indianapolis Identify your interests, values, and skills and apply them to your future career! 7
