1 VALE ADAMS CLASS OF 1938 GOLF: 4 VARSITY LETTERS BASKETBALL: 4 VARSITY LETTERS Vale Adams led his high school golf team to first place finishes in the County golf meet four straights years. He was the #1 golfer on the team all four seasons, placed 2nd in state as a sophomore and 5th as a senior. Vale went on to play golf and basketball for Lake Forest College, leading them to the College of Illinois Golf Championship and later assisted his son Gary in founding the Taylor Made Golf Company.

2 JOE JACKSON CLASS OF 1942 BASEBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS BASKETBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS FOOTBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS GOLF: 2 VARSITY LETTERS Joe Jackson earned eight varsity letters in his Junior and Senior years in high school. He was a state qualifier in golf, co-captain on the basketball team where he led the state in scoring, quarterback of the football team and pitched and played first base on the baseball team. Joe went on to play baseball for the United States Army s Dream Team, minor league for the Cleveland Indians and on the 1952 Johnsburg Tigers state champion team.

3 ART JACKSON CLASS OF 1944 GOLF: 4 VARSITY LETTERS FOOTBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS BASKETBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS BASEBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS Art Jackson earned an incredible 13 varsity letters in his high school athletic career. He captained the 1944 golf team to a second place finish in state while placing 3rd in state individually. A year before as a junior he placed 13th in state. Art went on to win the Naval Golf Tournament at Treasure Island, a state baseball championship as a member of the 1952 Johnsburg Tigers and a county bowling championship in In 1982, Art set a four-round golf record at McHenry Country Club with a score of 274 for 72 holes.

4 LLOYD FREUND CLASS OF1946 BASEBALL: 4 VARSITY LETTERS BASKETBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS FOOTBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS Lloyd Freund went on to play six years of minor league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Braves farm chain. He won a state baseball championship as a member of the 1952 Johnsburg Tigers and was named an Illinois State Semi-Pro All Star three times in state tournaments. Lloyd also founded the Johnsburg Little League in 1955.

5 SONNY MILLER CLASS OF 1947 FOOTBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS BASKETBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS BASEBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS Sonny Miller helped McHenry win the district baseball championship in his senior year of high school while achieving a win/loss record of 20-5 in his varsity football career. He signed with the Pittsburg Pirates and later won a state championship as a member of the 1952 Johnsburg Tigers.

6 CHUCK HILLER CLASS OF 1952 BASEBALL: 4 VARSITY LETTERS AWARDS 2 TIME ALL-CONFERENCE BASEBALL, ST. THOMAS COLLEGE MEMBER ST. THOMAS COLLEGE SPORTS HALL OF FAME At age 17, Chuck Hiller won a state championship as a member of the 1952 Johnsburg Tigers. He went on after his college career to play professional baseball from , while being active in the Major Leagues from He was a Major League 3rd base coach for 12 years, including the 1982 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Chuck is the FIRST National League player to hit a grand slam home run in the World Series.

7 DON BENTZ CLASS OF1959 FOOTBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS BASKETBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS BASEBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS AWARDS 1959 ALL-CONFERENCE: FOOTBALL & BASKETBALL 1974 & st TEAM ASA ALL-AMERICAN WISCONSIN AMERICAN SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME 1988 Don Bentz was a member of the 1959 North Suburban Conference Basketball Championship Team and was voted most outstanding senior athlete the same year. He went on to play three years with the McHenry Shamrocks baseball team from After playing softball for 23 years Don went on to coach and umpire local leagues for nearly twenty years.

OF WISC. s ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 2000 NORTHWEST HERALD S ATHLETE OF THE CENTURY Paul Morenz was the leading scorer as a fullback his senior year in high school, won the North Suburban Scoring Title in basketball, pitched a number of no-hitters in baseball and earned a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin in In 1966 he led the Big 10 Conference in RBI s while holding a.356 batting average. Paul is the only University of Wisconsin athlete to win two Player of the Year awards and be named University of Wisconsin s Athlete of the Year.

9 RICH SODA CLASS OF 1966 FOOTBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS BASKETBALL: 2 VARSITY LETTERS BASEBALL: 3 VARSITY LETTERS AWARDS 1965 ALL-CONFERENCE, HONORABLE MENTION ALL-STATE FOOTBALL 1966 ALL-CONFERENCE BASKETBALL & BASEBALL 1966 TRIBUNE ALL-STAR BASKETBALL TEAM 1968 ALL-CONFERENCE BASKETBALL & BASEBALL ELGIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE Rich Soda was captain of his football, basketball and baseball teams his senior year in high school, earning All-Conference honors in football as quarterback, punter, punt returner and defensive safety. Rich went on to earn a full scholarship to Northern Illinois University in all three sports, later transferring to Elgin Community College, earning All-Conference honors in basketball and baseball. He completed his collegiate career at Black Hills State College in South Dakota.

HALL OF FAME-COACH 1992 At a time before IHSA included girls sports, Cathy Bolger participated in the Girls Athletic Association (GAA) for four years at McHenry High School. A member of the allstar team for twelve seasons in field hockey, volleyball and softball, Cathy earned the GAA Sportsmanship award in She went on to earn ten varsity letters at Northern Illinois University, coach the 1978 field hockey team to a Hall of Fame induction and was later selected to NIU s Hall of Fame as a coach in 1992.

11 LEONARD MAC MCCRACKEN COACH/ATHLETIC DIRECTOR A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, Leonard McCracken began his coaching career at McHenry High School in Along with coaching, Mac taught physical education, history, social science and remained the athletic director for 43 years! His long list of accomplishments include being the head football coach for 16 years, basketball for 26 years, baseball for 32 years and many years as the track, cross-country and golf coach. M.C.H.S. has dedicated their football stadium McCracken Field three times in his honor beginning in 1958, again in 1988 with the new all-weather track and finally in 2006 with the addition of new home bleachers.

12 1944 GOLF TEAM 2ND PLACE FINISH IN STATE RICHARD SCHMITT DEAN McCRACKEN NORM KNAACK ART JACKSON HAROLD MICHELS COACH: LEONARD McCRACKEN Undefeated in match play against McHenry County teams in 1944, the McHenry High School golf team went on to win their district by seven strokes, scoring a total 323 and defeating second place Highland Park. Later that season the team would place second overall in state with a score of 668, topping the golf teams of La Grange, East Moline, Peoria Central and West Aurora.
