3 PRO-GLASS STANDARD GLASS TYPES We offer two types of glass from stock, to suit various applications and are detailed below: Toughened Glass Toughened or tempered glass is the most common type of glass used in balustrading installations that does not necessarily require the glass to provide structural integrity on its own. The toughening process is when the glass panel, after it has been cut to size, drilled and had other similar processes completed, has had the edges finished to the required specification and is then subject to heating and rapid cooling process that changes the properties of the glass at its molecular level. This change results in an alteration in the way the panel breaks, causing it to shatter into lots of very small pieces rather than breaking into harmful shards. Once broken, the shattered panel will not stay intact and the glass fragments will scatter in the vicinity. Toughened Laminated Glass Toughened laminated glass is used where there is the need to use the glass on its own as a structural element and where there is not necessarily any other safety measure in place. The panels are constructed by laminating two identical thinner panels, using an interlayer material, typically a clear polyvinyl material, to give a panel the desired thickness. The benefit of this process, as well as improving the strength of the panel itself, is that the glass will be held in one piece in the event of one or both of the glass laminates shattering. This means that the panel will still be in place and will not spread small fragments of glass around the vicinity. Guidance for specifying which type to use Prescriptive specification: Strength: Now that BS 6180:1999 Table 2 has been withdrawn, specifiers should be wary of specifying the glass type and thickness for any glazed balustrade, even if this information has been provided by a glass manufacturer. Performance specification from the designer is always a safer option. Safety: Specifiers should consider whether they wish to control the choice of toughened or toughened laminated glass, or allow either, if both glass types/thickness/sizes meet the strength criteria. Performance specification: Strength: It will generally be adequate to specify the minimum horizontal imposed loads from BS Table 2. In clause L.30/110, the NBS adopts the even more minimalist approach of specifying only the activity/occupancy category (by reference to the now withdrawn BS ), but this ignores the options within each type of occupancy and is not recommended. Safety: Specifiers should consider whether they wish to control the choice of toughened or toughened laminated glass, or leave this to the person or company with ultimate design responsibility. 10 PRO-GLASS HANDLING AND STORAGE Due to the nature of the product and its weight, glass is inherently a high risk element to handle and it must be carried and stored correctly to best avoid personal injury. The following guidelines will help ensure you plan the delivery, unloading, storage and installation of the glass with as little risk as possible to the people on site. Delivery: The delivery of the glass must be planned so that the delivery site is prepared to accept the delivery and provide suitable unloading facilities. There needs to be suitable labour available in case access is not possible or the unloading cannot be achieved by way of a mechanical lifting device. The delivery driver will be unable to assist in the unloading so there must be adequate provision of labour to meet the delivery. Unloading: In most cases, your glass order should be delivered carefully wrapped and banded onto a timber stillage which will be over 25Kg in weight so an unloading plan must be made. The stillages are designed so they can be unloaded from the delivery vehicle using a fork lift or pump-truck with suitable access to the loading deck of the vehicle. The stillages should not be unloaded by hand unless the packaging is removed and the panels are lifted off singularly, following carefully the usual manual handling processes and safeguards. Storage: Ideally, the panels should be left packaged together for as long as possible but if the glass needs to be moved to different locations, it needs to be stored in a way that minimises the risk of damage or breakage. It is recommended that the glass be stored on a surface softer than the glass itself, such as foam or cardboard and rested against a suitable vertical surface but leaned at an angle of between 3 and 5 degrees from vertical. The edges of toughened glass are the most vulnerable to damage and care must be taken not to hit anything against the edges or corners, or to leave the panels in a way that enables them to be easily damaged by activity in the surrounding area. Installation: Follow all guidelines from the component manufacturer when installing glass into any support system. Be careful to avoid knocking the corners or edges of the panels whilst positioning or levelling them. Only use materials made from softer substances than the glass if packing or supporting glass before final installations. Ensure there are enough people to assist in the installation of the glass, using the stated weights to determine how many people will be required. If using more than one vacuum tool the ratio of maximum lift capacity does not increase. To lift heavier weights a larger vacuum must be used.
