1 4-H Club Meetings for February Tolar 4-H - Tuesday, February 2 nd at 6:30 pm at the First National Bank Community Room. Lipan 4-H - Thursday, February 4 th at 6:30 pm at the Community Center Sharp Shooters 4-H - Meets every Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Reunion Fairgrounds. Regular business meeting in on the 1 st Tuesday of each month. Young Riders - Monday, February 1 st at 6:30 pm at the Reunion Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. Cornerstone 4-H - Monday, February 8 th, at 4:15 pm at Cornerstone Christian Academy (CCA has moved to the Church of Christ across from Granbury High School) Lake Granbury Community 4-H - Monday, February 8 th, at 7:00 pm at the Courthouse Annex 1 meeting room. Thank You We want to say Thank You to all the parents, leaders, and 4-H ers that helped with the county show. From weighing in animals, to working the Pancake Breakfast or helping with the Steak Lunch, once again our 4-H families have stepped up to the plate and helped make this year s show a big success! THANK YOU!!

2 Buyers Plaques & Thank You Notes We will be getting the buyers plaques and thank you note lists probably within the first couple of weeks in February. As soon as we get them, we will let you know. Remember you need to take your buyers plaque to your buyer as soon as we get them in and you have picked them up from the Extension Office. You will need to write your thank you notes, put them in an unsealed, addressed envelope with a stamp and bring them to the Extension Office. After we check it off our list, we will mail it for you. Livestock Raisers Association The HCLRA meets on the 3 rd Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm at the fairgrounds. We need more 4-H families to get involved with this group. They make the rules for the county show, up-keep the facilities and provide us a place and opportunity to show our projects. Next meeting is February 18, Livestock Raisers Association Scholarship The HCLRA gives scholarships to graduating seniors. This years applications are due on March 17, Contact the Extension Office for more information or look at hoodcountylivestockraisersassociation.org Horse Validation Spring is right around the corner. If you are planning on competing in the District or State 4-H Horse Show you will need to validate your horse in April. Registered horses must be in the 4-H ers or an immediate family member name. For full details contact Marty County Roundup Contest It is time to start thinking about spring contests. County Roundup offers a couple of great opportunities. Educational Presentation 4-H ers give a 6 to 12 minute presentation on a topic of their choice. This can be done with a partner or as an individual. Share - The - Fun This is our talent show. Individuals or groups can perform short acts or skits in the following areas. 1. Celebrate 4-H 2. Choreographed Routine 3. Dramedy 4. Musical/Instrumental 5. Poetry/Prose 6. Solo/Band Performance 7. 3 4-H Awards As we start the new 4-H year we want to remind you about the awards you can apply for at the end of the year. Non Competitive - base on completing certain activities: 4-H Rookie - Any 1 st year 4-H er can apply 4-H Honor Roll - Junior 4-H members can apply 4-H All Star - Intermediate 4-H members can apply 4-H Letterman - Senior 4-H members can apply Completive - based on record book, applications, interviews - 2 of each may be awarded: Silver Spur - Junior 4-H ers can apply Gold Spur - Intermediate 4-H'ers can apply Gold Star - Senior 4-H ers can apply (NOT) Leadership Lab 4-H ers who will have finished 8th Grade this May and are interested in Leadership Lab mark your calendar for June 26 th - 29 th, This year will NOT be like your typical Leadership Lab! 4 Consumer Decision Making Practices Anyone interested in Consumer Decision Making is invited to attend practices on the following dates: (Please RSVP!) February 1 February 4 February 8 February 11 Will serve as County Contest if we need one. February 18 February 22 February 25 District is Saturday, February 27th! Contact Brianne with any questions! 7th Annual Ellis County 4-H Open Invitational Archery Tournament When: Saturday, February 27, 2016 Where: Ellis County Youth Expo Building 2300 West Highway 287 By-Pass Waxahachie, TX Registration Fee: $20 ($30 non 4-H members) Registration Deadline: Feb.15th, 2016 Check In: 8am for first flight (start time 9am) 12pm for second flight (start time 1pm) 4-H Indoor FITA Archery rules apply. Ages are by 4-H grade, as of August 31, Space is limited to 100 participants. Spaces will be filled as entries are received. If entries arrive and there are no spaces available, they will be contacted and their entry will be returned. For more information contact the Extension Office. Bosque Bullseyes Outdoor Invitational Archery Tournament Date: Saturday, April 2, 2016 Time: 8am 9:30am Check in & practice range available 10am Start Location: Clifton Archery Club (Map Below) Limited to 100 Entries - Entry Fee - $30 This is and Invitational Tournament Open to District 8 4-H Shooting Sports Members Only. Participants will compete in three events: Modified 600, 3-D & Field: Rules for each event will follow those in the Texas 4-H Shooting Sports Project Archery Rules, and can be found on the on the State 4-H Website, archery page or at the following link: Modified 600 For this event - All Bare Bow/Recurve shooters will shoot maximum distance for next lower division. Junior division maximum will be 10 yrds lower than listed below. All shooters will shoot a total of 31 arrows. For more information contact the Extension Office.

5 Spring Contests The first round of Spring contests has district competitions beginning in late February. The second round of contests fill up the month of April, bleeding over into May. Below are some of the projects/contests offered in the Spring. You can find out more about these projects on the District 8 4-H website: If any of these interest you as a 4-H er or adult volunteer, please contact Marty or Brianne. We are happy to assist in any projects a 4-H er wants to do, but it takes adult leaders & volunteers to help us make it happen. We are happy to help in any way we can. Horse Judging District Contest Date: April 16th Teams of three or four members individually evaluate multiple classes of 4 horses for composition and performance. Teams all compete at once, judging the same sets of classes. Both age groups give oral reasons on a specified number of predetermined classes. Consumer Decision Making District Contest Date: February 27th Consumer Decision Making is a judging contest designed to teach kids to observe, compare and make consumer based decisions based on facts. Teams of 3-4 members individually use their consumer knowledge to rank similarly based products to fit a given scenario. Kids learn to organize their thoughts and to defend their decisions in oral reasons. Livestock Judging District Contest Date: April 23rd Livestock judging is the process of evaluating, selecting, placing, and learning the various livestock species cattle, sheep, goats and swine. Judging is the foundation of any 4-H livestock project. District Rifle Contest Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: May 14th The District Rifle Contest is a competitive shooting contest with several different categories Seniors can qualify for State at the Texas 4-H Roundup. Meat Judging District Contest Date: April 23rd Learn science-based information to consider when evaluating and making decisions, as well as learning proper meat storage and handling procedures. Range & Plant ID District Contest Date: TBD The range science project develops knowledge and skill in practical range and ranch management. The Plant ID contest familiarizes 4- H ers with native pasture plants & grasses. Teams of 3-4 compete individually judge scenarios and identify plant specimens. Leaders 4 Life (Parli. Pro) Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: TBD The Leaders 4 Life Program provides resources to equip clubs in conducting high quality leadership training, parliamentary procedure training, and service learning activities.
