2 Workshop Aims and Objectives To share experience of successful best practice in promoting effective, engaging teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese with a focus on the learner. To promote parity of experience for all students engaged with a Confucius programme. To promote an enjoyable/ engaging and effective delivery of Mandarin Chinese. To focus on the learner as the focal point in all lesson planning, delivery and self- reflection and evaluation of lessons. To raise awareness of the mindful role of the persona of the Mandarin Chinese tutor in the successful engagement of students/ learners, in the teaching and learning Mandarin Chinese programme experience.

6 Feedback from schools/ learners The tutor kept the pupils engaged throughout the lessons and the whole programme. She used lots of different activities. The tutor knew how to make the lessons fun and she included relevant culture. The interpersonal and social skills of the tutor are extremely important. The children looked forward to lessons each week. The tutor made it all exciting. We were able to link the culture to other areas of the curriculum. Parents loved to hear the language that the children had to practise with them at home. The work on the MP3 kept the language alive for them from one class to the next.
7 Key: VAK Learning Styles Developed by psychologists to classify the most common ways that people learn. According to the Model, most of us prefer to learn in one of three ways: visual, auditory or kinaesthetic although in practice, many have a balanced and even blend of the three styles of learning. Think of this presentation. What style do you prefer? Is it the images (Visual) and/ or words used (Auditory) and/ or the participation of the audience (Kinaesthetic)?
8 VAK Learning Styles Visual Auditory Kinaesthetic These learners will respond with understanding to visual demonstrations. These learners will respond to what they hear. (Children love to mimic) These learners learn by doing. They will want to have a go. I see what you mean. I hear what you are saying Let me try. Engage visual learners by using images, diagrams, charts, pictures, colour. e.g. Match vocabulary to visuals. Engage auditory learners with a focus on Mandarin Chinese Listening exercises, pronunciation, tones. e.g. Invent lyrics with a focus on the vocabulary/ language being taught. MP3 for homework exercises. Engage Kinaesthetic learners by including hands on, interactive, physical activities using the vocabulary being taught. Bingo game to practise numbers; use of physical objects/ items Panda Bear; Number cards
