A student s use of study aids consists of having a good understanding of resources available to you and how to use those resources to help you become a more effective and efficient learner.

4 YOUR TEXTBOOK AS A STUDY AID Get the big picture- Skim your text to get an overview of the topic by reviewing the table of contents, illustrations, etc.. Read what the author says is important by surveying the chapter title, major headings & subheadings, objectives and summary. Check out extra support materials such as the appendix, glossary, index, and online learning resources.
5 YOUR TEXTBOOK AS A STUDY AID Focus in- Do your reading assignment using all resources that will help you understand and learn the topic. The process of selecting & highlighting certain passages can force you to find the main ideas. Mentally summarize the main ideas after reading each page. Keep notes on key points & questions you have.
6 YOUR TEXTBOOK AS STUDY AID Online textbook resources Some textbooks have online learning environments designed to help students with customized content such as self-testing tools, multimedia learning aids and individualized learning plans. 7 MAKE YOUR OWN STUDY AIDS Flash Cards A customized memory system to master and retain facts and concepts. Select info from your notes, course handouts, & textbook that you must learn or memorize. Make flash cards by printing part of info on one side and the rest of the corresponding info on the other side. You can make digital flashcards Go to Practice the data on your flash cards by reciting answers. Mark cards that you don t remember. Work with the flash cards until you know the material!
8 MAKE YOUR OWN STUDY AIDS Graphic Organizers Also called knowledge maps, concept maps, cognitive organizers, etc. A series of visual charts and tools used to organize a student s knowledge and show relationships between facts or ideas. Allows the mind to discover patterns and relationships to help with learning. Some types of graphic organizers include the Venn diagram, cause & effect, word web, the five W s, and flow charts. Completing the 5 W s for a reading assignment can help you learn details. A Venn Diagram is used for brainstorming and comparing two topics.
11 GROUP STUDY SESSIONS Meet with other student in your class to compare lecture notes, talk about assignments and review materials together. Decide where to meet, day & time, how long each session will last, and what to bring to each session. Designate a group leader who will keep everyone on task and informed of future meeting plans. Show up prepared and resist the temptation to socialize more than study.
