1 All About Spelling Scope and Sequence Level 1 Your student will learn encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, and multisensory strategies for spelling, along with exciting new concepts, including phonograms, consonant teams, segmenting, syllables, consonant blends, initial blends, final blends, and plurals. Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 1. Below is a sampling in each area: Learn techniques for syllable counting Identify the first and last sounds in words Segment words with two and three sounds Learn phonograms A- Z, plus TH, SH, CH, CK, NG, NK Spell words with short vowel sounds containing new phonograms, such as bath, dog, cash, wing, and such Spell words ending in FF, LL, and SS, as in cliff, will, and miss Spell words with initial blends, as in frog and swim Spell words with final blends, as in land and help Spell plural words with suffix s or es, such as cups and lunches Spell compound words, such as cobweb and bathtub Level 2 In Level 2, your student will continue to learn encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, and multisensory strategies for spelling, along with exciting new concepts including 11 new phonograms, vowel teams, syllable division rules, Silent E and Vowel- Consonant- E words, blends, and R- controlled syllables. Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 2. Below is a sampling in each area:

2 Learn to distinguish between open and closed syllables Learn procedure for spelling multisyllable words Learn that every syllable has at least one vowel Divide compound words, VCCV words, and VCV words into syllables Learn words with the R- controlled syllable type Learn phonograms WH, EE, ER, AR, OR, OU, OY, OI, AW, AU, and OW Spell one- syllable words ending in Y, such as fly Spell words with I or O followed by two consonants, such as find or gold Spell words with blends at beginning and end, such as twist Spell words containing soft C and soft G, such as race and page Spell words ending in the sound of /v/ and /u/, such as give and glue Spell words containing the third sound of A and the third sound of U, such as wash and push Spell Vowel- Consonant- E (VCE) words Spell words with two closed syllables Spell words with with open and closed syllables Learn to pluralize words ending in Silent E

3 Level 3 In Level 3, your student will continue to learn encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, and multisensory strategies for spelling, along with exciting new concepts including 10 new phonograms, the jobs of Silent E, words with C+l- e syllables, contractions, homophones, consonant and vowel suffixes, and past tense. Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 3. Below is a sampling in each area: Analyze ways to spell long vowel sounds Categorize the jobs of Silent E Identify C+l- e syllable types Learn about homophones Learn about past tense Learn about consonant suffixes and vowel suffixes Learn phonograms AI, AY, UR, OA, OO, EA, ED, IGH, IR, and EY Spell words with C+l- e syllables, such as table Spell words with double consonants, such as puzzle Spell words with the ending sound of /e/ spelled y, such as happy Spell words with consonant suffixes and vowel suffixes, such as thankful and loudest Spell common contractions, such as can't Spell common pairs of homophones, such as dear and deer Level 4 In Level 4, your student will continue to learn encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, and multisensory strategies for spelling, along with exciting new concepts including 12 new phonograms, prefixes, strategies for multisyllable words, abbreviations, and words with unaccented A. Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 4. Below is a sampling in each area:

4 Learn strategies for spelling the sounds of /j/ and /ch/ Learn how to add prefixes Categorize the four sounds of the letter Y Apply spelling strategies to multisyllable words Analyze the five ways to spell the sound of /er/ Learn to spell common abbreviations Learn phonograms TCH, DGE, EW, EI, WR, KN, OR, EIGH, EAR, PH, TI, and OE Spell words with prefixes, such as unhappy Spell words with the different sounds of Y, such as yellow, myth, shy, and candy Spell words with the fourth sound of O, such as second Spell words containing unaccented A, such as about and above Spell words with the sound of /shun/ spelled TION, such as question Level 5 In Level 5, your student will continue to learn encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, and multisensory strategies for spelling, along with exciting new concepts including 7 new phonograms, words with multiple suffixes, words with unaccented syllables, plurals, I- Before- E generalizations, and more words with Silent E. Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 5. Below is a sampling in each area: Learn how to add two suffixes to a word Analyze two ways to spell the sound of /shun/ Learn about unaccented syllables

Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 6. Below is a sampling in each area: Learn exceptions to the I- Before- E generalization Practice spelling words with IE and EI Analyze four ways to spell words ending in /ŭl/

Spelling strategies for lifelong learning are also covered. Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 7.
