Electronic Health Record Specialist in partnership with Boston Reed As an Electronic Health Record (EHR) Specialist you will assist healthcare providers to choose, implement, train and maintain an electronic health records system. You will learn the essential components of the electronic health record and health information exchange essentials; system selection and implementation; project management and fundaments of change and human factors. This course is 216 hours in length offered online with live, weekly teleconferences. Upon successful completion of the program graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion, and will qualify for the optional certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). 2 Clinical Medical Assistant Wayne College in partnership with Boston Reed Clinical medical assistants working in a physician s office or a clinic setting: Greet and room patients Obtain vital signs from patients Help physicians carry out procedures Perform basic wound care Drape patients Collect specimens Administer medication Work in a physician s office or a clinic setting This program combines 92 hours of classroom, 42 hours online, and 160 hours offsite externship which provides you with a comprehensive learning experience 294 hours of training. Topics covered include: Medical terminology Emergency procedures Infection control, medical asepsis and sterilization Physical exam and patient history documentation Rehabilitation and therapeutic modalities Safety and regulatory guidelines Basic microbiology Nutrition in health and disease Basic pharmacology Calculation of medication dosage and medication administration Legal and ethical considerations and HIPAA regulations Students must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be a minimum of 18 years old. Students need competency in, or completion of, a basic computer operations course. Students will be required to have access to the Internet, printing capabilities and an address. Prior to placement in an externship, students will need to show proof of completion of CPR for the health care provider course, a health examination including TB testing and submission of a resume. Students are required to take English reading and comprehension, and math basics assessment prior to starting the course. Most health care employers will require applicants to submit to a criminal records check, and those convicted of or having pled guilty to a felony may not be eligible for employment. The program consists of lecture, clinical instruction, demonstration, individualized study, small and large group discussion and independent research. You will be evaluated with pre- and post-tests, tests and quizzes, an oral exam, observation, assignment completion, self-evaluation, completion of a project with critique and a final exam. Upon successful completion of coursework and externship hours, you will receive a certificate of completion from Wayne College in partnership with Boston Reed. Certification: The curriculum taught in this class will help prepare you to take the National Center of Competency Testing (NCCT) exam for medical assisting at Wayne College. Certification is important because it may be a requirement for employment, and it may give you hiring preference over applicants who are not certified. Visit to find out more about certification. 3 EKG and Phlebotomy This is a unique, customized course to train you to be a phlebotomist and a cardiographic technician. Phlebotomists: Are skilled health care professionals trained to collect, transport, handle and process blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis using venipuncture and microcollection techniques Identify and select equipment, supplies and additives used in blood collection Understand factors that affect specimen collection procedures and test results EKG Technicians: Are allied health support personnel who can work in a variety of settings Assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac (heart) ailments Are educated and trained to perform diagnostic procedures at the request of the physician to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with cardiac disease Work in a variety of locations from doctors offices to hospital cardiology departments Operate machines that record the electrical changes that occur during and between heartbeats This comprehensive program will prepare you for employment as an advanced, cross-trained EKG technician or phlebotomist working under the supervision of licensed health care providers. Lecture, lab and practicum topics include: An introduction to the phlebotomy profession Anatomy and physiology for phlebotomists Proper procedures for collection and infection control Basic cardiovascular anatomy and physiology EKG techniques and recognition Basic cardiovascular electrophysiology Stress test techniques, Holter monitoring and cardiac medications The program includes 128 classroom hours, 30 hours phlebotomy and 30 hours cardiographic offsite externships 188 hours of training. Employment growth for EKG and phlebotomy technicians and other health care assistant occupations is higher than average across the U.S. and is expected to grow by 32% by According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, phlebotomists can earn $11.25 to $12.15 an hour, depending on where they work hospital, private clinic or physician s office. Students must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Certification: The Clinical Medical Assistant program will prepare you to assist a physician, provide care to patients in a doctor s office or clinic, and sit for a national certification exam, and the EKG technician certification (CEN). The median hourly earnings of pharmacy technicians in 2009 was $ The job outlook for full- and part-time pharmacy technicians is good and is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through According to the Ohio Department of Jobs & Family Services, Bureau of Labor Market Information (September 2009), pharmacy technician is in the fastest-growing occupations in Ohio, with a growth rate of 26%. Students must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be a minimum of 18 years old. Considerable homework is required and several class sessions will focus on the necessary math skills. Certification: Emily s Law (S.B. 203) requires pharmacy technicians to meet certain qualifications and pass either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Examination (PTCB Examination) or the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) Examination. 5 Veterinary Aide and Pet Care Your love of animals may open the door to a new career! Veterinary Aides: Work with veterinarians and veterinary technicians to treat animals for disease, administer injections or medications, and assist during surgery or physical exams Comfort animals during veterinary appointments Prepare food and medicines Remove stitches and bandages May prepare tissue samples and run simple lab tests May prepare medications and sterilize instruments for surgery Assist in cleaning cages and kennels Work at the reception desk and/or greet clients and their animals Topics covered in this course include: Preventive health practices and sanitation Pharmacy skills Pet nutrition Office safety practices Vaccine protocols Assisting with medication administration Laboratory procedures Medical history preparation Assisting with exam room, dentistry and/or radiology procedures Pet behavior Wound and emergency care Customer service and office communications working with customers The program is 42 hours of classroom training. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median wage for veterinary aides in Ohio is $10.29 per hour, and the job market is expected to grow 14.8% by Nationally, the median wage is $9.98 per hour. Students must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be a minimum of 18 years old. Considerable reading homework and assessment are a part of this course. Consistent attendance is required. All material presented through this class has been developed within the guidelines of the generally accepted standards of veterinary medical practice as it pertains to veterinary aide duties, as defined in rule promulgated under the Ohio Administrative Code section Veterinary Aide duties (c)(9). 6 Personal Trainer Certification Preparation Certified Personal Trainers: Work one-on-one with clients either in a gym or in the client s home Help clients assess their level of physical fitness and set and reach fitness goals Demonstrate various exercises and help clients improve their exercise techniques May keep records of client s exercise sessions to monitor client s progress toward physical fitness Advise clients on how to modify their lifestyle outside of the gym to improve their fitness The personal trainer certification preparation course is composed of both classroom learning and practical activity. Key content covered in the course includes: Anatomy Biomechanics Exercise physiology Health and physical fitness Screening and evaluation Nutritional sciences Weight management Resistance training techniques Cardiovascular fitness Exercise programming The program is 30 hours of classroom training. Personal trainers often start out by taking classes to become certified. They then may begin by working alongside an experienced trainer before being allowed to train clients alone. Most personal trainers must obtain certification in the fitness field to gain employment. According to the State of Ohio Labor Market Information, the prospects for a career as a personal trainer are good and will continue to grow. The average wage for fitness trainers in Ohio was $12.70 in The job market is expected to grow 15.9% through Personal trainer certification students need to have a high school diploma or the equivalent and must be at least 18 years old. This course is approved by State Physical Therapy Boards, the National Athletic Training Association and the American Dietetic Association for continuing education credit. Consistent attendance and homework will be required. Certification: This program will prepare you to take the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) Personal Trainer Program Certification (NCSF-CPT) Exam. 7 Small Business Accounting Certificate Holmes County Higher Education Center This program is designed to give you the hands-on experience and practical skills you need to become a bookkeeper for a small business or an accounting clerk with financial responsibilities. The certificate combines 36 hours of Bookkeepers Boot Camp and 24 hours of computer lab training in QuickBooks. Course content includes record keeping system setup, balance sheets, income and cash flow statements, sales and purchasing cycles, payroll and inventory basics, bank reconciliation, tax reporting schedules and beginning and advanced QuickBooks. Bookkeepers: Update and maintain accounting records, including those which calculate expenditures, receipts, accounts payable and receivable, and profit and loss Make numerous computations Must be comfortable using computers to calculate and record data In a small business, may be in charge of the general ledger, posting transactions, debits and credits Prepare financial statements and reports May prepare bank deposits and payroll, make purchases, prepare invoices and track overdue accounts Topics covered in this course include: Record keeping system setup Balance sheets Income and cash flow statements Sales and purchasing cycles Payroll and inventory basics Transactions between the company and its owners Bank reconciliation Petty cash Record keeping and tax reporting schedules Beginning and Advanced modules of QuickBooks automated record keeping system Employment of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks is projected to grow by 4.5% through the year According to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, Bureau of Labor Market Information, September 2009, the average hourly wage of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks in Ohio (with 12 months combined experience and training) was $ Bookkeeping clerks who carry a wider range of bookkeeping and accounting skills will be in greater demand than specialized clerks. Students must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be a minimum of 18 years old. Homework, completion of an accounting simulation project and consistent attendance are required. Students must be proficient in keyboarding and should have an understanding of Word and Excel to take the QuickBooks portions of the certificate. Bookkeepers Boot Camp Tuesdays & Thursdays May 14 June sessions 5:30-8:30 p.m. The certificate program combines 36 hours of classroom training for Bookkeepers Boot Camp and 24 hours of computer lab training for QuickBooks. Classes are held at the Holmes County Higher Education Center 88-B E. 8 Web Design Series & Certificate The Web Design Certificate allows you to develop and maintain a company website or upgrade a current website. This certificate program will help to demonstrate your skills to current and future employers. Web Designers: Design, build, and maintain websites Perform or direct website updates Write, design, or edit webpage content or direct others in producing content Maintain understanding of current Web technologies or programming practices Nationally, the need for Web design computer specialists is expected to grow 15% or faster than average in the next 7 years. In Ohio, salaries for Web design associates range from $18.04 per hour to a median hourly wage of over $33 per hour. Those with an associates degree or bachelor s degree with additional work experience and training can earn up to $48 per hour in Ohio. Students should be familiar with basic Internet concepts and the Windows platform, and have the ability to use a Web browser. Students wishing to pursue the Web Design Certificate should have educational and/or work experience with Internet, Windows and/or Design experience. Incorporate images, multimedia elements, and properly formatted text to develop well organized websites that users can easily navigate through.
