1 SOUL 2.0 User Guide for Learners (August 2013) This user guide is produced and distributed by the Centre of Cyber Learning. It is an instructional handbook and guideline for learners to study with regards to the use of SOUL 2.0. Suggestions on improving this user guide are welcomed. OVERVIEW SOUL 2.0 System is a Web-based e-learning system which serves as a communication channel between institutions and learners, between learners and instructors as well as among learners and instructors. With the provision of a learning environment rich in diversified features, users can access a set of easy-to-use SOUL 2.0 features, which include: Course Announcement Course Content Course Calendar Asynchronous Course Discussion Forum Assignment Upload/Download Resources sharing Real-time (synchronous) Chat Online Quizzes and Surveys Online Gradebook Course Report Wiki This document aims to show learners the basics of SOUL 2.0 how to log in, edit your profile, access resources from enrolled courses and more. It can also help you becomefamiliar with the system and reap the greatest benefits from it. 5 2. LOGIN TO SOUL Login and Edit Profile HKU SPACE learners can use your Learner Portal account to access the SOUL 2.0 website. For CC, CDP and part-time students, the username is your student number. For HPCC students, please check your Learner Portal Login ID from If you are a non-portal user, a specific Username and Password would be assigned to you. Please contact your programme team to get the account information. Follow the steps below to login to SOUL 2.0: 1. Open a Web browser. (For example, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer, etc.) 2. Go to the SOUL 2.0 website at 3. On the right of the Login Area, enter your Username and Password. 4. Select your User group Student for Learner portal users / Others for non-portal users. 5. Press the Login button. If you are a Learner Portal user, the Edit Profile page would be shown for first-time login. 1. Edit the information in your profile if necessary. 2. Press the Update profile button. Note 1. The Password is case-sensitive. 2. The Password should contain at least 6 characters and have no spaces. Important Remarks: For Learner Portal users, you cannot change your password or address in SOUL 2.0. If you want to change your password or address, please login to Learner Portal and change it. 6 2.2 Personal Homepage Upon successful login to the SOUL 2.0 system, you would be able to see the Personal Homepage screen as shown above. It is composed of 3 columns. The side column contains a number of blocks for you to perform the following activities: To navigate different sections (Navigation) To view the upcoming events (Upcoming events) To view recent activities since your last login (Recent activity) To seek technical support in using SOUL 2.0 (Support Centre) To find other useful HKU SPACE resources (HKU SPACE e-services) To manage your course schedule and your personal events (Calendar) To edit your profile settings (Settings) Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. 7 The middle part is a larger column where you can find the courses latest announcements (Announcement) and your enrolled courses (My courses). When there is an announcement posted in a course, it is listed out under the Announcement section. The list would show the latest 3 announcements of your course(s). If users have subscribed to the Announcement for receiving , they would receive an with the announcement subject and message when an announcement is posted. 2.3 Language Available On the SOUL 2.0, three different language user interfaces are available. They are English, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. To change the language settings: 1. Click on My profile settings in Settings block. 2. My profile settings folder would be expanded. 3. Click on Edit profile link. 4. In Preferred language pull-down menu, select the language preferred. 5. Press the Update profile button. Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 7

8 3. MY COURSE Learners can access to the enrolled courses under the My courses listed in the middle column of the Personal Homepage. Simply click on the course name to gain access to course materials prepared by instructors. Under Course categories, learners are provided with functions to perform the following tasks: To view course description To view and/or download course notes/resources To view and download assignment question and submit assignment online To participate in a collaborative learning environment by using online conference room / chat room To attempt quizzes set by instructors To obtain resources links or materials from instructors for reference To participate in other activities like Wiki, Workshop, Database, Choice or Survey 3.1 Course Website Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. 9 After entering the course, you would be able to see the course website. In SOUL 2.0, each course may have different designs in terms of colour, display and position of blocks. Blocks that may be shown in the course main page include: Navigation shows and course outline and provides navigation between chapters Upcoming events displays future events in a summarized list Latest news lists the latest messages posted in the announcement and forums of that course Recent activity lists course activity since the user last accessed the course Support Centre lists useful information of SOUL 2.0 HKU SPACE e-services lists HKU SPACE useful links Calendar allows learners to view course events Settings access Profile and Grades On the course main page, students can access course content such as notes, exercises, assignment materials, quizzes and discussion forums that concern a particular topic. 3.2 Navigation After entering the course, there are two ways to navigate learning materials: Navigation bar Navigation block Navigation bar If you click the course code, you go to the main page of the course website. 10 3.2.2 Navigation block The navigation block provides navigation between courses and chapters as a folder that can collapse or expand. When you click an activity title, you can directly go to the activity material. 3.3 Upcoming events The Upcoming Events block displays future events in a summarized list. Events are generated directly from the calendar and/or activity deadlines, providing a link to full details or directly to the activity. There are also links to Go to calendar... and add a New Event... If you click on a date, you will go to the day-view calendar for that day. If the title of the event is a link, and you click on it, you will be taken to that event. 3.4 Latest News Recent posts made in the News forum will display as a listed item in the Latest News block, along with a link to older archived news. 3.5 Recent activity The Recent Activity block lists course activity, such as updated resources and activities, forum posts and assignment submissions, since the user last accessed the course. 11 Students can always see their own recent submissions. 3.6 Support Centre In the Support centre block, you can find useful information of SOUL 2.0 such as 1-Minute Demo, FAQs and User Guides. If you have any queries or comments regarding SOUL 2.0, you can submit an IT Help ticket from here. 3.7 HKU SPACE e-services You can find list of HKU SPACE useful links from HKU SPACE e-services block, such as link of HKU Library and Portal service. You can also read the booklet on plagiarism provided by The University of Hong Kong. 3.8 Calendar The Calendar block gives learners an overview on events (lectures, tutorials, assignments, examinations) that will occur throughout the month. By placing the cursor on a particular date, learners will be given a brief context of the activity. By clicking on the date, a detailed description on the activity will be shown. Activities are grouped into the following 4 categories: Global viewable in all courses (created by admin users) Course viewable only to students in a course (created by instructors) Group viewable only by students of a group (created by instructors) User (personal event) viewable only by the creator By clicking on the eye icon next to the category, the corresponding events will be hidden from the above calendar. To show the hidden events in the calendar, simply click on the eye icon once more. Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 11

12 3.8.1 Schedule Details On clicking the month year shown in the top of the Calendar block, a bigger calendar view of the selected month is shown. By default, the events of all enrolled courses in the selected month are shown. With the top pull-down menu, learners can view the event(s) of a particular enrolled course in the selected month. On clicking any event name in the calendar, the details of the schedule will be shown. Besides, learners can choose to synchronize the SOUL 2.0 Calendar and the Microsoft Outlook calendar. To synchronize the Calendar with Outlook calendar: 1. On the Personal Homepage, click on the Go to calendar link in the Upcoming Event block or click on the month year in the Calendar block. 2. Press the Export calendar button. 3. Choose the Export options. 4. Press the Export button. Or simply press the ical button to get a full icalendar file which can be opened with the Microsoft Outlook Personal Events Under Calendar, learners can create/edit/delete their personal schedule according to their needs. Learners can even set the time format and the display format of the upcoming events. To add a personal event to Calendar: 1. On the Personal Homepage, click on the Go to calendar link in the Upcoming 2. Event block or click on the month year in the Calendar block. 3. 13 4. A screen for New Event is shown. 5. Enter the following items: a. Event Name b. Event Descriptions c. Schedule date and time d. Duration e. Repeat or not 6. Press the Save changes button. 7. The created event with details is shown. To edit a personal event: 1. On the Calendar screen, click on the event name to be edited in the calendar. 2. A screen for the event details is shown. 3. Click on the Edit event icon (like a pencil) displayed against the event on the right hand side. 4. A form with the event details pre-populated is shown. 5. Make the changes to the event details. 6. Press the Save changes button. 7. The updated event with details is shown. To delete an event: 1. On the Calendar screen, click on the event name to be deleted in the calendar. 2. 14 3. Click on the Delete icon (like a cross) displayed against the event on the right hand side. 4. A confirmation screen is shown. 5. Press the Delete button to confirm. 6. The daily schedule of the date of the deleted event is shown. To set preference in Calendar and Upcoming event blocks: 1. On the Calendar screen, press the Preferences button shown on the right. 2. Select the option of the following items based on your preference: a. Time display format b. First day of week c. Maximum upcoming events shown. 3. Press the Save changes button. 3.9 Notes/Materials Instructors may provide learners with notes for lecture, tutorial and workshop. Learners can view or download the notes prepared and posted by instructors. To view / download a note file posted on the SOUL 2.0 System: 1. On the course main page, click on the material title. 2. The content of the note file selected is shown. Or 3. A File download dialog box will be shown, press Open or Save to open the file or save it to your computer Assignment Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. 15 Instructors may post up online assignments in the course. There are two assignment types - Online text and Attachment submission. Learners can clink on the assignment title at the course main page to access the assignment. Learners can also access the Course Assignments by clicking on the assignment title in Navigation block. Learners are reminded to submit assignments before deadline because late submissions may not be allowed. Learners can check the due dates through the Calendar of both course website and their Personal Homepage, or in the Upcoming events block. On clicking the assignment title, the following information of the assignment is provided: Assignment title Instructions and assignment details Start date of the assignment available online Due date of the assignment Submit Document Learners can submit their assignment work as documents via the SOUL 2.0 System. Those assignments that allow online submission are displayed with an Upload a file button (for upload a single file assignment), or Upload files button (for upload multiple files assignment) on the assignment page. To submit a single file assignment work file: 1. On the Course main page, click on the assignment title. 2. The screen for the selected assignment is shown. 3. Press the Upload a file button. 4. The page for uploading a file is shown. 5. Press the Choose a file button. 6. The File picker window is shown. Click the Upload a file link. 7. Press the Browse button. Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. 16 8. The Choose File dialog box is shown. Go to the destination folder where the assignment file is located and select the file. 9. Press the Open button. 10. Press the Upload this file button. 11. The Assignment screen is refreshed with the file name you have selected is shown. Make sure you have chosen the correct file. 12. Press the Save changes button. 13. The screen is refreshed, your submitted assignment file name is inserted with your name in front. You can click the file name to check your submitted file. 14. The last update date and time is shown on the top right corner. Note: Learners are allowed to delete or replace the uploaded file(s) before the assignment work are graded. Press the Update this button to replace the uploaded file, or choose no file to delete the submitted one. To submit a multiple files assignment work files: 1. On the Course main page, click on the assignment title. 2. The screen for the selected assignment is shown. 3. Press the Upload files button. 4. The page for uploading a file is shown. 5. Press the Add button. 6. The File picker window is shown. Click the Upload a file link. 7. Press the Browse button. 8. The Choose File dialog box is shown. Go to the destination folder where the assignment file is located and select the file. 9. Press the Open button. 10. Press the Upload this file button. 11. The Assignment screen is refreshed with the file name you have selected is shown. Make sure you have chosen the correct file. Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 16

17 12. Repeat steps 5 to 10 to upload more files. 13. Press the Save changes button. 14. The screen is refreshed, your submitted assignment file name is inserted with your name in front. You can click the file name to check your submitted file. 15. The last update date and time is shown on the top right corner. 16. If you want to submit more files, press the Edit these files button to add more files. 17. After checking all the uploaded files, press the Send for marking button to submit the assignment files. You CANNOT update your submission hereafter. Note: Learners are allowed to delete the uploaded file(s) before the assignment work are graded. To delete the file, press Edit these files button to enter uploading file page. Then next to the file name your want to delete, click on the file properties button and press Delete. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the file. Press Save changes to confirm the update Submit Online Text Learners may be requested to write online text as assignment on SOUL 2.0 System. Those assignments that allow online text submission are displayed with an Add Submission button on the assignment page. To submit online text for a particular assignment: 1. On the Course main page, click on the assignment title. 2. The screen for the selected assignment is shown. 3. Press the Add Submission button. 4. Type your work in the Submission editor box. 5. 18 View assignment grade and feedback After instructor grades your assignment, you can see your grade and feedback on SOUL 2.0. To view the grade and feedback of your assignment: 1. On the Course main page, click on the assignment title. 2. The screen for the selected assignment is shown. 3. You can see the Feedback from the Instructor name and the grade you get in the assignment is shown. You can also download the feedback file if any Chat On the SOUL 2.0 System, instructors and learners, or among learners can communicate realtime via the Chat function. This not only encourages collaborative learning among learners, but also facilitates the exchanges between learners and instructors on the learning topics. Instructors and learners of a course can participate in the real-time discussion without the need of being physically at the same place. Learners can click on the chat title to enter the activity. Besides, the chatting activities can be accessed from Navigation block. To join an online discussion session: 1. On the Chat activity page, click on the Click here to enter the chat now link. 2. A pop-up window of the chatting session is shown. On the right-hand panel of the pop-window, the participants of the chat session are shown. 3. Type the message in the lower New Message box and then press the Send button. 4. The submitted messages and messages posted by other participants will be shown on the upper panel. If learners could not attend a previous discussion session, they can go the Chat activity page to view the recorded session. Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 18

19 To view a recorded discussion session: 1. On the Chat activity page, click the View past chat sessions link. 2. Click on the See this session displayed against the session to be viewed. 3. The content of the selected session is shown Choice Choice is a single-question polling; it is usually posted by the instructor after a lesson to collect views and feedback or to check the progress of students. It is quick poll that learners have to choose one answer out of several choices. Based on the settings by the instructor, learners may see the polling results right after submitting their choice. To select a choice: 1. On the Course main page, click on the choice title. 2. The screen for the selected choice is shown. 3. Select one of the choice s radio button. 4. Press Save my choice button. 5. You have made your choice and your selection will be shown. 6. You can update your choice or remove your choice if applicable. 7. You can view the result when it is available Group Choice Group choice allows you to form a group when it is available. To choose a group: 1. On the Course main page, click on the group choice title. 2. The screen for the selected group choice is shown. 3. You can see the list of group member by clicking the [+] icon. 4. 20 5. Press Save my choice button. 6. You can update your group or remove your choice if applicable Database Database is a flexible fill-in and upload tool that allow learners to upload their files for sharing with classmates and instructors. Once a file is uploaded, comments can be made by other classmates and instructors. It is very useful for sharing materials among students for collaborative learning or group project. By clicking on the database title, you can enter the database activity. Besides, the database activities can be accessed from the Navigation block. On the Database activity page, the entries are listed out according to the time of creation. Database entries can be sorted by the relevant field, date of creation and by author. Besides, database entries can be retrieved by the search function. To add a database entry: 1. On the Database activity page, click on the Add entry tab. 2. Enter the information of the entry to be added. 3. Press the Save and view button or the Save and add another button. 4. The Database activity screen is refreshed with the submitted entry Forum The forum is a useful tool where students can freely discuss issues related to the subject. Apart from the face-to-face tutorial discussion, instructors and learners can establish a discussion forum on the learning topics via the SOUL 2.0 System. On the SOUL 2.0 System, learners are provided with an interface to participate in these discussions for idea exchange. Learners can view and respond to the messages posted under the assigned discussion group. This enhances the effectiveness of communications among individual learners and instructors. Forums maybe categorized into different areas or topics. Learners may be able to generate a new topic under a certain forum by clicking on the Add a new discussion topic button. 21 As a learner, it is recommended to log on to the forum sections frequently to check the discussions being carried out. Click on the forum title to enter the discussion forum. Besides, the discussion forums can be accessed from the Navigation block View Messages on Discussion Topics On the selected discussion forum page, learners can view the discussion topics created under that forum. By clicking on the individual discussion topic links, messages posted under that discussion topic are shown. Posted messages can be grouped by sequence for easy viewing by selecting the display option on the top. To retrieve the parent post of a replied message, click the Show parent link displayed against the message. To see all the posts written by a certain person, click on the person s name. In the Navigation block, click on Forum posts link and then click Posts, all the messages posted by this person will be shown. To search the postings within the discussion forums, type the keyword in the field box in the top right corner and then press the Search forums button. The matching postings will be listed out with the entered keywords being highlighted Add Discussion Topics In some discussion forums, learners are allowed to add discussion topics. To add a new discussion topic: 1. On the selected discussion forum page, press the Add a new discussion topic button. 2. Enter the subject and message. 3. Select the Subscription option. 4. If an attachment is included, press the Add button to upload the file. 5. If you want the system to send out alert immediately to the subscribers of the forum, check the Mail now box. 22 6. Press the Post to forum button. 7. The topic is posted to the forum. 8. To edit a topic that you have posted, go to that message and then click on the Edit link. Press the Save changes button after making the changes. 9. To delete a topic that you have posted, go to that message and then click on the Delete link. Press the Continue button to confirm Post Messages for Discussion Topics To post a message for a discussion topic: 1. On the selected discussion forum page, click on the discussion topic for which you want to post a message. 2. The posted messages under the discussion topic are shown. 3. Click on the Reply link displayed against the message you want to respond. 4. Enter the replied message. 5. If an attachment is included, press the Add button to upload the file. 6. Press the Post to forum button. 7. The message is posted to the forum. 8. To edit a message that you have posted, go to that message and then click on the Edit link. Press the Save changes button after making the changes. 9. To delete a message that you have posted, go to that message and then click on the Delete link. Press the Continue button to confirm. Note: Bear in mind that learners can only edit/delete his/her messages/discussion topics within the first 15 minutes of submission. Besides, once the created discussion topic/message is being replied by somebody, the discussion topics/messages cannot be deleted Glossary Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 22

23 Glossary provides the explanation on difficult words and terms that learners may come up in the course. Besides text explanations, outside links, illustrations or attachments can also be added to the glossary. Learners are able to contribute to the Glossary activities by: Adding new entries Commenting on the posted entries* Rating the posted entries* * These features are only available if they are allowed by instructors in the Glossary setting. With the posted glossary entries, the terms that appear in the course website will be autolinked to the glossary section. By clicking on the glossary title, learner can enter the activity. Besides, the glossary activities can be accessed from the Navigation block. On the Glossary activity page, the glossary entries are listed out alphabetically. Glossary entries can be sorted by category, date of creation and by author. By clicking the ALL link, all the entries will be listed out Add Glossary Entries To add a glossary entry: 1. On the Glossary activity page, press the Add a new entry button. 2. Enter the Concept name and definition. 3. Enter the keyword(s) for the concept. 4. If an attachment is included, press the Add button to upload the file. 5. Select the options for auto-linking. 6. Press the Save changes button. 7. The Glossary activity screen is refreshed with submitted entry Edit Posted Entries Learners are allowed to edit their own entries. Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 23

24 To edit posted entries: 1. On the Glossary activity page, click on the pencil edit icon displayed against the glossary entry. 2. Enter the changes. 3. Press the Save changes button. 4. The Glossary activity screen is refreshed with updated entries Comment on Posted Entries To comment a glossary entry: 1. On the Glossary activity page, click on the Comment link displayed against the glossary entry. 2. Enter the comment. 3. Click the Save comment link. 4. The Glossary activity screen is refreshed with submitted comment. 5. To view the comments on an entry, click on the Comments (x) link displayed against the glossary entry, where x is the number of comments received Rate Posted Entries To rate a glossary entry: 1. On the Glossary activity page, select the rate from the pull-down menu displayed against the glossary entry. 2. The screen is refreshed with the rating of the entry Lesson The lesson is a self-contained resource page with various forms of support such as text, figures, audio, animations, videos and glossary links. Quiz and corresponding feedbacks can also be added to the lesson. Learners can attempt the quizzes generated so as to familiar Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 24

25 with the learning topics. Based on the setting by the instructors, number of attempts and the corresponding results of the quizzes may be recorded by the SOUL 2.0 System, and instructors may use this information as part of the course assessment Mindmap Mindmap is a useful tool for mindmap construction, you can use it for concept building. To edit a mindmap: 1. Enter the Mindmap activity page. 2. You can add nodes by: - Double clicking on any place or clicking the green plus-icon in the toolbar; or - Pressing ENTER of the keyboard to add a node to the same layer; or - Pressing INSERT of the keyboard to add a sub-node. 3. You can move node by positioning a node over new parent, then release the mouse and reposition the node. You can delete nodes by: - Pressing CTRL and click on the node; or - Pressing DELETE on the keyboard; or - Clicking the red minus-icon in the toolbar. 4. You can Undo and Redo by - Press CTRL + Z and CTRL + Y or - Use the icons in the toolbar. 5. You can Autocomplete-Node by pressing END of the keyboard NanoGong voice activity Copyright 2013 HKU SPACE. All rights reserved. 25

26 NanoGong is a simple and transparent tool to facilitate voice communication between instructors and students. It can be used to record, playback and save a voice file, in a web page. A NanoGong activity allows the student to submit their recording to the teacher, also teachers can record their feedback for students. To submit a recording: 1. Enter the NanoGong activity page 2. Enter the subject of the voice submission 3. By ensuring JAVA is enabled in your browser, a recorder tool can be seen under the title, you may press the record button to start recording, press the play button to playback, use the speed control buttons to control the speed of playing and the save button to save the recording. 4. Press submit to submit the recoding to the instructors Questionnaire Questionnaire activity is a survey-like type of activity. Instructor will use it to get student feedback on a course or activities. To complete a questionnaire: 1. On the Course main page, click on the questionnaire title. 2. The screen for the selected questionnaire is shown. 3. Answer the questions by selecting the check box/radio button/type the text. 4. Press Submit questionnaire button. 5. 27 With the Quiz activity, learners are provided with a number of quizzes to assess their learning progress for the course. It consists of a pool of questions created by the instructors, which may be in either one of the following question types: Calculated, Calculated multichoice, Calculated simple, Embedded answer (Cloze), Essay, Matching, Multiple choice, Numerical, Random short-answer matching, Short answer and True/False. Sometimes time limit is set for the quiz activity, a floating count-down timer showing how much time remains is shown. When you have finished the whole quiz, press the Submit all and finish button to check the accuracy and feedback. Learners can attempt the quizzes generated so as to familiar with the learning topics. The number of attempts and the corresponding results of the quizzes may be recorded by the SOUL 2.0 System, and instructors may use this information as part of the course assessment Attempt Quiz To attempt a quiz for a particular course: 1. On the course main page, click on the title of the Quiz activity. 2. The information of the selected quiz is shown. Press the Attempt quiz now button. 3. The screen with questions for the selected quiz is shown. If time limit is set by the instructor, a timer is shown at the top left corner of the screen. 4. Complete the quiz by selecting the correct answer for each question. 5. Press the Next button for next page of question. (If quiz consists of more than 1 page) 6. The screen of Review of the selected attempt is shown, listing the correct answers and the relevant grade SCORM package SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a collection of specifications that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of webbased learning content. Based on the setting by the instructors, number of attempts and the corresponding results of the activity may be recorded by the SOUL 2.0 System Survey Survey is a standard, verified survey instruments that have proven useful in evaluating what students are doing and thinking in the classes. To complete a survey: 1. On the Course main page, click on the survey title. 2. The screen for the selected survey is shown. 3. Answer the questions by selecting the radio buttons. 4. 29 6. Press Continue link Turnitin assignment Instructors may post up Turnitin assignment in the course. Learners can click on the assignment title at the course main page to access the Turnitin assignment. You can perform originality checking on your work to ensure proper citation and avoid potential plagiarism from Turnitin text and document repository. You can submit assignments in a digital format including MS Word, WordPerfect, Postscript, PDF (text-readable), HTML, RTH (Rich Text) and TXT (Plain Text). The language should be Chinese or English. On clicking the Turnitin assignment title, the following information is provided: Turnitin Assignment name Summary Assignment part Start Date of the assignment available online Due Date of assignment Post Date of grades Max Marks of assignments Submit Assignments To submit a file document: 1. Press Add Submission button. 11. The screen is refreshed, your submitted assignment title and date is shown. 12. The similarity is shown if originality report is set to allow student to view it. To submit text work 1. Click on the Turnitin assignment from the course home page. 2. Click on the My Submissions link. 3. The submission type Text Submission is shown. 4. Enter the submission title. 5. Select the part of the assignment (if any) you are submitting the paper to. 6. Copy the text you want to submit and paste it within the text box. 7. Check the box next to the agreement. 8. Press Add Submission button. 9. The screen is refreshed, your submitted assignment title and date is shown. 10. The similarity is shown if originality report is set to allow student to view it. 31 learners cannot resubmit papers. Previous submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmissions. If instructors set Generate reports immediately, reports can be overwritten until due date Originality report for initial submission will be generated immediately. Learners are allowed to resubmit their assignments until the due date. Originality reports for the second or subsequent submission will incur a 24 hour delay. Instructors can only retrieve the latest submission. The previous versions would be removed. If instructors set Generate reports on due date Originality report will only be generated for any submission until the due date and time of the assignment Originality Report, grade and feedback To access Originality Report, grade and feedback: 1. Click on the Turnitin assignment from the course home page. 2. Click on the My Submissions tab. 3. Check the Originality Report by clicking the percentage icon under Similarity. 4. Check your grade after post day. 5. If the instructor has left comment for your paper, the blue number link will show the number of comments an instructor has made. Click on the blue number to view the instructor s comment(s). 6. Click the arrow icon to download a copy of the submission Wiki Wiki is a useful tool for group work and collaborative study. Learners within the same course can create documents and all members within the same group are able to edit the content directly. To start with a wiki, instructors will usually give students instructions in the first page. In the wiki page, there are 6 tabs, namely View, Edit, Comments, History, Map and Files. Under the Edit page, learners will create the content of the group work. With the View page, learners can get the overview of the finished work. 32 Note: Wiki is synchronized among learners within the same group, therefore only one student can edit wiki at one time Workshop It is an assessment that involves peer evaluation. Instructors will give out an assignment and each student has to submit their work. After that it is the stage for peer evaluation. Students are able to see the work submitted by other classmates. Based on the criteria set by the instructor, points or grades will be given and it will contribute to part of the grade of the assessment. 33 4. GRADES Under Grades Section, learners are provided with grades in each activity for them to keep track on their learning progress. On clicking Grades on the Settings block, the Grades report (User report) of the selected course is shown. 4.1 User report Under User report, learners are provided with the following information (if applicable): Grade achieved each activity Range for each activity Percentage of each activity Feedback provided by the instructor 4.2 Overview report Under Overview report, a summary of the grades in the enrolled courses are shown. To view grade summary of the enrolled courses: 1. On the User report page, choose Overview report from the pull-down menu on the top left corner. 2. A list of course(s) that the learner has been enrolled is shown, with the corresponding overall grade. 3. You can click on the course name to view the User report of that course. MY PROFILE Under Profile section, learners can perform the following tasks: To change the SOUL 2.0 login password (for non-portal users) To provide/update their own address (for non-portal users) To set their site preference on SOUL 2.0 To update their profile information To review their posts in forums To send messages to classmates or other instructors 5.1 Change SOUL 2.0 Login Password (for non-portal users) To change Password: 1. Click on your name in the top right corner 2. A screen for User Personal Profile is shown. 3. Click on Change password link under My profile settings in the Settings block. 4. Enter the following items: a. Current Password b. New Password (At least 6 characters, without space) c. Re-enter New Password 5. Press the Save changes button. 6. Your password is updated, please use new password to login next time. Note: For portal users, please change your password in learner portal. Press the Update profile button. 8. Your address is updated. Note: For portal users, please change your address in learner portal. The address will be synchronized to SOUL 2.0 in the next day. 5.3 Set Site Preference Learners can define their own site preference on SOUL 2.0 System, such as the settings, time zone, preferred user interface language and other forum subscription settings. To define site preference: 1. Click on your name in the top right corner. 2. Click on Edit profile link under My profile settings in the Settings block. 3. A screen for User Personal Profile is shown. 4. Select the appropriate option for the following items: a. display (whether to show to other users and how) b. Your Personal Profile has been updated. 5.4 Send Messages to Classmates or Instructors Under User Profile section, learners can send messages to their classmates/ instructors from the contact list, and check received messages. By default the contact list is empty. To manage your own contact list, go to the Search tab and look for your classmates and instructors. To send messages to classmates or instructors: 1. Click on your name in the top right corner. 2. A screen for User Personal Profile is shown. 3. Click on Messages link under My profile in the Navigation block. 4. A screen with the contact list is shown. You can select the user group from the My contacts pull-down menu. 5. If there is no person in the contact list, enter the name (could be partial)of the person you want to look for and then press the Search people and messages button. 6. 38 6. FORGOT PASSWORD In case learners forget their own password, they can activate the Forget Password Function. On submitting the valid registered address, learners will receive an containing instructions to reset their SOUL 2.0 password. To activate the Forget Password Function (non-portal users): 1. On the SOUL 2.0 homepage, press the Yes, help me log in button in the Login Area. 2. The screen for Forgotten password is shown. 3. Select Others from the User Group pull-down menu. 4. Enter the username or the address registered in the SOUL Press the Search button. 6. If you supplied a correct username or address, an contains instructions to reset the password will be sent to the account. To activate the Forget Password Function (learner portal users): 1. On the SOUL 2.0 homepage, press the Yes, help me log in button in the Login Area. 2. The screen for Forgotten password is shown. 3. Select Student from the User Group pull-down menu. 4. The HKU SPACE Central Authentication Service page is shown. 5. Enter the information in the form. 6. Press the Submit button to reset your password of learner portal. 7. LOGOUT SOUL 2.0 ACCOUNT After completing tasks with the SOUL 2.0 System, it is advised to log out the system properly by clicking on the Logout link in the top right corner.
