MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 1 (19) Marking on packaging Contents 1 Using this document General rules Required markings and labels Placement of markings and symbols Dimensioning of markings and symbols Marking and symbols on odd packaging References Change Information Appendix...19
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 2 (19) 1 Using this document This document is synchronized with the marking requirements in General requirements for packaging material design 1056-CSX Uen [Ref 4] from and including revision T. The relevant requirement tags from 1056-CSX are referenced in this document. This document provides generic rules for marking of packaging for Ericsson products (white* and black box**). It covers marking which is related to the product packaging and also describes correct placement of all marking. It does not cover marking and labels relating to the product. These are covered in Uen [Ref 1] (see also appendix). This document is not applicable to packaging for 3PP*** products or components used in printed board assembly processes (see appendix). If you have any questions regarding this document please contact Packaging Material Development (PMD) (packaging.material.development@ericsson.com) * White box products are those where Ericsson both specifies and designs the product. For these products Ericsson is also responsible for packaging design. ** Black box products are those where Ericsson specifies a product but allows an external company to design the product. For these products the supplier is responsible for packaging design. *** 3PP (third party products) are those where the supplier specifies and designs the product and is also responsible for the packaging.
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 3 (19) 2 General rules Each package requires a combination of some of the following labels: - HU label - Packing list - Product label - (Shipping label - for whole shipment) - (Dangerous goods label - for particular products) The package design must ensure that space is allocated for the all the labels required on that specific package. Packaging material must be designed so that marking and symbols are not covered by tape, packing straps or labels. If transparent tape is used it is considered not to cover marking & symbols. Marking and symbols should only be used when needed. Markings and symbols may be applied directly by printing, stamping or indentation, or as labels. Only the markings described in this document are permitted. Exceptions must be approved by Packaging Material Development (PMD), contact: (packaging.material.development@ericsson.com) Print color: For packaging material for Ericsson designed products all information must be in black. Exceptions are permitted for dark surfaces where white can be used for better contrast and readability; [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_004]. 1 Ericsson Black NCS: S 9000-N 2 Ericsson White NCS: 0301-G76Y 3 Required markings and labels 3.1 The Ericsson Logotype; [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_008] Three types of Ericsson logotype may be used on packaging: For outer transport packaging the vertical logotype must be used (exceptions are permitted on some odd sized boxes where the horizontal logotype is permitted instead). For inner packages, the E-con logotype must be used.
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 4 (19) Six sizes of logotype/e-con are permitted. All logos on the same package must be the same size. Correct sizing is based on the area of the smallest package face to be marked with a logo, see section 5. Logotype graphic images for use on packaging are available here. 3.2 Packaging material identification; [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_005] Components which must be marked with an Ericsson product number (RTK*) are defined in 1056-CSX Uen and must be marked as in the example shown here: RTK /1 3.3 Supplier ID marking; [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_006] Components which must be marked with the supplier ID are defined in 1056-CSX Uen. The Supplier ID should be the name of the supplier plus a code chosen by the material supplier. 3.4 Maximum content marking; [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_011] Boxes must be marked with the maximum content weight as in the example shown here: Max content 20 Kg 3.5 Recycling marking (materials identification); [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_013] Recycling information must be marked on packaging components where appropriate. For corrugated board and wood/plywood, marking should be printed or stamped. For plastics, printing or indentation should be used. Correct markings are shown in table 1. Marking is required on plastic components where the impact on cost is acceptable. Markings should be in accordance with ISO For corrugated board, ISO 7000 recycling symbols must be used together with the applicable material code. Plywood must be marked with an ISO7000 recycling symbol.
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 5 (19) Type of information Recycling materials identification Recycling Recycling Material Plastics (ISO 11469) Corrugated board (ISO 7000) Plywood Symbol CB Table 1: Materials identification and recycling symbols 3.6 ISPM 15 marking; [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_014] Marking on wooden packaging treated according to ISPM 15 must comply with the requirements of the standard and include: 1. Country code of the certifying country 2. Wood packaging producer s unique registration number as issued by the National Plant Protection Organization 3. Applicable treatment codes: CPI (chemical pressure impregnation), KD (kiln dried), HT (heat treated) 4. Bark free code DB (debarked). 5. The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) symbol Marking must be placed so that it is visible on two opposite sides of the wooden packaging. 1 2 SE-YYXXXX HT KD DB Figure 1: Example of marking of a heat treated, kiln dried, and debarked wooden package from Sweden.
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 6 (19) Note: If a packaging unit is made up of several permanently assembled parts it can be marked as a single unit. If some parts are not made from wood, marking does not need to be on the wood. Visibility is more important. If a packaging unit is a temporary assembly as defined in ISPM 15, every separable wood containing component must be marked. The following are examples temporary assemblies: Packaging sets consisting of a pallet and hood. In this case both the pallet and hood must be marked if they contain treated wood. Packaging sets consisting of a pallet, collar and lid. In this case the pallet, collar and lid must be marked individually if they contain treated wood. 3.7 Package handling symbols; [Ref 4, tags PMD_MK:S_009 & PMD_MK:S_010] Packages must be marked with handling symbols only when needed. Where possible the number of handling symbols should be restricted to a maximum of 4. Only handling symbols in ISO 780 (see also doc FAE [Ref 2]) and Ericsson specific symbols (see next chapter) are permitted. The most commonly used handling symbols are shown below: General handling symbols Symbol Product number Definition (ISO 780) Comment SVS This way up This is a recommendation to make it easier to unpack the product. SVS Handle with care This is a request that extra caution should be taken when handling this package and its content. SVS Keep away from rain The package should be placed under roof. SVS Stacking limit by number The number states how many identical packages can be stacked on bottom package. Recommended for high volume products. Note: Items in the stack = 1+n
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 7 (19) SVS Do not stack No load should be placed on this package. SVS Maximum stacking load Maximum load mass permitted to be stacked on the bottom package Table 2: Most common handling symbols from ISO 780 Ericsson specific symbols The following additional ISO standard symbols and non ISO standard symbols are permitted on Ericsson packaging where needed. Symbol Product number Definition Comment SVS Centre of gravity Used for product with high center of gravity that easily can tip over. SVB /1 Tipping risk This label is used together with a printed center of gravity. It is used to strengthen the message that top heavy packaging is dangerous and can tip over. SVH Sensitive electronic equipment This label is used to strengthen the message that the package contains very sensitive equipment SVB 129 Sensitive electronic equipment This label indicates sensitivity to electrostatic discharge Table 3: International standard symbols and unique Ericsson symbols 3.8 Label guides Packages must have label guides (solid lines 2 mm thick) marking the correct placings of HU (handling unit) and/or packing list.
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 8 (19) Figure 2: Label guidelines (dimension in mm) 3.9 Minimum filling requirement (pick and pack only) A minimum fill level line showing 85% fill level must be used for all pick and pack boxes > 1/8 EU-pallet. Figure 3: Minimum filling level (dimension in mm) 4 Placement of markings and symbols 4.1 General placement rules; [Ref 4, tag PMD_MK:S_002] This section gives general rules for package marking. They apply primarily to box based packaging and should be applied flexibly to other types of design. Box face designation Package faces are denoted as follows; top (1), long side front (2), bottom (3), long side back (4), short side left (5) and short side right (6).
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 9 (19) Figure 4: Package faces zones zones are areas on the package which must be kept free from marking and symbols. These are at edge of box faces and around the Ericsson logotype. They are shown in grey in figures For correct sizing of free zones see section 5. Ericsson logotype Logotypes must be placed at the optical center of each of the four sides. The optical center is a point above the geometric center. The distance is 10% of the length of the logotype; 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 15.0 or 20.0 mm. Handles, where used, must not interfere with logotype that placement or alternatively, apply the logotype to only two sides (see also odd packaging). For packaging with a height 1.35m the logotype must be placed at the optical center of the upper half of the package. This also applies to stretch film packaging where only the hood is available for marking (see figure 6).
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 10 (19) Figure 5: Logotype/E-con placement is dependent on the height and design of the package Label Guides Label guides lines must be placed on the inner edges of the free zone in the top right corner. Where there are two label guides there should be a 14 mm space between them. Figure 6: Label guide placement, dimension in mm 4.2 Correct placement on outer transport packaging This section describes where on the package marking and symbols must be placed. The following markings are printed on transport packaging: Ericsson logotype, handling symbols, guidelines (HU label and packing list), RTK number, max content, recycling symbol and supplier identification.

MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 16 (19) 5 Dimensioning of markings and symbols Six different sizes of logotype/e-con are permitted on Ericsson packaging. When calculating the smallest package face area the top and bottom are not included. Exceptions are permitted for odd sized packaging (see section 6). The size of the logotype defines the size of all other marking on the package, see tables below: Outer (transport) package Smallest package face area (cm 2 ) Inner package Vertical logotype Length zone Min Width RTK xxx xxx/x Max content xx kg height Table 6: Dimensions to be used on all packaging Supplier ID marking Height Handling symbols Height Dimensions of Ericsson specific symbols are stated in the specification document for the symbol. Recycling symbol Height < > Smallest package face area (cm 2 ) E-con Length zone Min Width RTK xxx xxx/x Supplier Max content xx kg ID marking height Height Recycling symbol Height < >
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 17 (19) Inner protection (fitments) should marked by indentation mm deep. E-cons on fitments may be up to 10% smaller than E-con length shown above. For Ericsson modular boxes, an additional row may be added under product number and max content. The total height of the 3 rows will be 1.5 times the height given in tables 5 and 6. 6 Marking and symbols on odd packaging An odd package is a package: where the area of one side is less than 50% of another side that is smaller than 1/16 of an EU-pallet that has punched holes or plastic handles Figure 17: Odd packaging Taping, strapping, printing of marking and symbols or application of labels on odd packages is difficult, the following exceptions to the general rules are acceptable: The logotype/e-con may be printed on only two or one side if size makes it difficult to find space for labels. On small packages HU/shipping labels need only be applied to one package face.
MARKING INSTRUCTIONS 18 (19) The logotype/e-con may be printed on the lid, for example fefco 0427 boxes. The size of the logotype should be calculated on this surface. The horizontal logotype could be used if lid must be used for labels. The horizontal logotype can be used when labels use up all space and come too close to a vertical logotype placed in the center. HU/shipping labels may be placed on the top/lid of small packages, for example fefco 0427 boxes. zone width may be increased to give room for e.g. strapping.
