Not all slurry additives are the same Active NS is the only one subjected to laboratory testing and is among the best-selling slurry additives in Europe, which goes to show that quality pays in the long term. There are several types of slurry additives on the market, but there is a big difference in quality; this can be seen, for example, in the amount of ammonia the products are capable of binding in the slurry. Pricing of some products is fairly similar, but a good rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for as is usually the case. What is the difference? There have been slurry additives on the market for more than 20 years, and the products have not changed in this period. However, a few years ago, a new product became available that stands out from the crowd because of its special, brand-new composition. The product is marketed under the name of Active NS and is a 100% natural product primarily composed of three different types of pre-processed clay minerals. What differentiates this product from the others is the quality and the choice of raw materials, as well as the special preparatory process. This unique powder has the special property of absorbing slurry and water into its structure and slowly releasing it again. This process allows Active NS to operate as a buffer for both slurry and water, reducing the amount of fertilizer flushed into the groundwater. This also enables Active NS to work as a fertilizer booster. The high ion-exchange effect of Active NS is also unique compared to other products. The ion-exchange effect of Active NS also restricts airborne pollution, with vapours containing ammonia constituting a major nuisance in this regard. The Active NS powder works according to the principle of exchanging negatively and positively charged ions. This binds the ammonia to the slurry, massively reducing the amount of ammonia vapour. The powder also has a positive effect on the slurry during agitation, producing a more homogenous mass. Active NS is outstanding Comparing the product with the common types on the market, Active NS stands out significantly in three other areas too. The product has been demonstrated in practice to bind more nitrogen in the slurry, resulting in better fertilizing value when the slurry is spread on the fields. This is a major benefit to organic arable farmers especially. In laboratory tests in Hungary and Germany, Active NS has also demonstrated its capacity to bind ammonia in slurry, to make slurry more homogenous and, in bio-gas experiments, its capacity to stabilise the entire production process and boost gas output. In Danish agriculture, slurry analyses before and after using Active NS have shown significant differences in the nitrogen content of the slurry. Active NS has produced such good results in bio-gas plants in Denmark that the product has become a fixed raw material in bio-gas production. Active NS is also the only product to have been lab-tested among the best-selling slurry additives in Europe, which goes to show that quality pays in the long term.
The latest new full-scale trial shows that Active NS can reduce odour and emissions of ammonia from slurry by 23% Slurry additive Active NS has received IPPC approval, as several independent laboratory tests in Europe have demonstrated that the product is capable of reducing ammonia and odour from slurry by 20 25% In addition to these laboratory tests, full-scale trials have also been conducted in housing units, slurry tanks and fields. These trials showed a 23% reduction in odour and ammonia in housing units, and in field trials, after six hours, there was a documented reduction of 20 25%. Active NS is now IPPC approved Based on these excellent results from the various laboratory tests, Active NS has now received IPPC approval in Europe. IPPC stands for Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control. IPPC is an EU directive from 1996 and its purpose is to prevent and combat pollution of the air, water, soil and contamination from dust, etc. Agriculture can achieve big savings on environmental costs It is well known that Danish farmers are being subjected to ever-increasing demands in terms of environmental measures. Nitrogen emissions and slurry odour are very much in focus. Existing technical solutions to help farmers comply with environmental legislation often entail major investments. Many different solutions are currently available to enable compliance with legal requirements. Unfortunately, however, a great deal of investment is usually required. With the latest new research results, Active NS now opens up entirely new possibilities, as this product is an inexpensive solution when it comes to reducing odour and ammonia. The product is easy to use, and into the bargain, farmers find their slurry is more homogenous for spreading on the fields. Active NS offers a number of benefits Reducing nuisance odour from the slurry makes for a better environment in the housing units, during storage as well as when spreading the slurry on the fields and less ammonia evaporates into the countryside, too. Slurry with Active NS added could also offer some significant benefits for biogas plants that receive slurry from these farms, as using Active NS in bio-gas plants has contributed to more stable production. This also means bio-gas producers can be more flexible in terms of the raw materials they use, and overall handling of bio-gas production can be made easier. Future problem-solver For farmers, Active NS will prove an excellent problem-solver when it comes to slurry handling in housing units, slurry tanks and on the fields. The product alleviates the key problems, and the price is particularly attractive compared to the rather more expensive technical solutions available. For this reason, Active NS could be a future problem-solver in agriculture, as it enables compliance with the environmental requirements imposed on farmers with regard to the handling of slurry from livestock, etc. APPROVED ACTIVE NS SLURRY ADDITIVE INTEGRATED POLLUTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL IPPC
Active NS optimises results in the stable slurry tanks / lagoons and biogas plants Agricultural benefits * Binds up to 1.2 kg NH 3 per tonne of slurry * More homogenous mass * Floating crust on the slurry tank * Easier handling * Less nuisance odour binds NH 3 * Facilitates work processes * Stir only once every 24 hours Usage Reception pits Add 20 g of Active NS per m 3 of slurry in the reception pit and agitate vigorously before pumping into the storage tank. If Active NS is used all the time, regularly add 20 g of Active NS per m 3 of slurry added since the previous treatment. Agitate before pumping the slurry into the storage tank. Storage tanks Use 20 g of Active NS per m 3 of slurry in the storage tank. Add Active NS before or at the same time as agitating the storage tank. If there is a floating crust on the storage tank, puncture it with the agitator. Pour the Active NS directly down by the agitator to make sure the Active NS mixes thoroughly with the slurry right away. This produces the best effect. Lagoons Lagoons can be a challenge, as the slurry is usually pumped around the lagoon. Add Active NS at a rate of 20 g per m 3 of slurry in the lagoon. Then circulate vigorously using the pump to agitate the sediment so that the Active NS can mix with it. Because the sediment is often very solid, you should expect to empty the lagoon three times before it will be completely empty. For maximum effect, add Active NS to all new, untreated slurry. Benefits for bio-gas production * Boosts gas production by up to 10% * Easier stirring of the biomass * Less sedimentation in the production tank * Easier stirring of the reception pits and storage tanks * Floating crust on storage tanks * Less odour from storage tanks * More fertilizer available for crops Biogas plants Here are a few guidelines that must always be adhered to at the outset, as the bacteria that develop the gas are highly sensitive to change. Furthermore, the amount of sediment in the tank is not known. For this reason, do not simply start by adding 20 g of Active NS per m 3 in the reception pit, as this could harm the bacteria and risk bringing all the sediment up and immediately mixing it back into the biomass. In the worst case scenario, this could reduce gas production and block the pipe systems in the plant. Correct start for a biogas plant Start by identifying how much biomass (slurry + industrial waste) is added each day. Then add 20 g of Active NS per m 3 of biomass added. As most biogas plants have a reception pit with capacity for one week s use, it may be sufficient to add Active NS once a week; if this is not the case, however, add Active NS daily. What to expect After a very short agitation process, the biomass will mix better; mixing will become easier, and the biomass will become more homogenous; the amount of sediment in the reception pit will be reduced week by week. Once all the biomass in the tank has been treated with Active NS, gas production will start to increase. Active NS reduces nuisance odour by binding nitrogen in the slurry. This provides a better environment, outdoor as well as indoor, benefiting animals, people and nature.
Pig farmer Bent Pedersen comments: If we run the slurry out in the morning, after our neighbour has left for work, and we re finished before he comes home, he doesn t know we ve done it. Active NS slurry additive is used primarily in slurry tanks, lagoons, slurry channels/containers, preliminary tanks and bio-gas plants. The product has produced positive practical results in agriculture as well as in bio-gas plants in Denmark and abroad. Jacob Svendsen, pig farmer, Østerlars, Bornholm We never used to have a floating crust on the lagoon. But today, the thick slurry has moved to the top, which makes a very good floating crust. Also, stirring and emptying the lagoon are easier now. We even find more dry matter in the slurry when we extract it, whereas it used to be thin to start with and then thick at the end. Quite simply, the slurry has become more homogenous, so we can apply fertiliser to the fields more uniformly now, for better end results, according to Jacob Svendsen, a pig farmer from Østerlars on Bornholm. Hans Christian Hovmøller, pig farmer, Stenderup, Horsens The difference in the slurry can be seen clearly in the organic rotation crops, with the crops doing much better, according to Hans Christian Hovmøller. For growing organic seed grass, it is important to ensure the crop gets sufficient nitrogen, because otherwise it does not lodge. The reason the seed grass has done so well this year is because we used Active NS, which has enabled us to get more out of the slurry in the way of more nitrogen content. So we are delighted about using the product, because the day-to-day benefits of the product have been confirmed by actual practice, according to Hans Christian Hovmøller of Dallerupgård Svineproduktion A/S in Stenderup, south of Horsens. Bent Pedersen, pig farmer, Rødkærsbro, Viborg Bent Pedersen, of Rødkærsbro, has a herd of 1,550 sows on his Brandstrupgaard farm, with annual production totalling 46,500 pigs weighing 35 kg. There are 160 ha of arable crops, 142 of which belong to his farm. Brandstrupgaard also has a bio-gas plant producing 3.4 million of electricity for sale each year. Here, 18,000 m3 of slurry and 3,000 tonnes of maize are processed each year. Agitation of the preliminary tank has become much easier since we started adding Active NS. We also find there is less slurry odour, as we no longer get that pungent odour every time we agitate the preliminary tank. When it comes to extracting the slurry, our experience has been entirely positive. If we run the slurry out in the morning, after our neighbour has left for work, and we re finished before he comes home, he doesn t even know we ve done it, according to Bent Pedersen.

Since the middle of February, a distinct reduction in the power consumption of the fermenter agitator has been evident. This positive effect continued until the middle of April and then stabilised at a significantly lower level compared to when we started using Active NS at the beginning of January. Compared to January, the power co sumption required for the fermenter agitator has decreased to 48.7% for the operating range and to 59% for the operating range. Adding Active NS makes the entire biogas process easier to manage. It has made stirring easier too which helps to recoup some of the costs.
Active NS a new opportunity for solving liquid manure management problems in animal farms Reference test results obtained in MESTER-PIG Kft s pig farm The most common problems relating to liquid manure management include high ammonia emission and the related increase in ear abrasion, formation of pockets of solidified manure, the occurrence of blockages when the manure is drained, and the resulting wastage of large amounts of water. Active NS offers a solution to such problems. Location of reference test The additive Active NS was tested in practice in the pig rearing buildings of MESTER-PIG Sertéstenyésztő Kft. The testing involved measuring the effect of the preparation on the composition of air in the pig rearing establishment, the acidity, sedimentation and drainage of liquid manure, as well as recording the number and severity of ear abrasions. Samples taken from the produced liquid manure were subjected to sedimentation tests in the laboratory of Károly Róbert College. Results Acidity of liquid manure: The acidity of liquid manure proved to be lower (average ph value of 6 to 6.3) in the lagoons treated with the additive Active NS than in the control lagoons. The difference was between 0.2 and 0.5. Concentration of harmful gases: No contamination with harmful gases (NH3, CH4, H2S) could be demonstrated in the case of the rooms where treatment with the additive was applied. In the control rooms, ammonia, sulphur-dioxide and some methane contamination was measurable on a regular basis. Homogeneity of liquid manure: The liquid manure samples taken in the pig farm were subjected to hour sedimentation tests under laboratory circumstances to establish the effects of Active NS application on the sedimentation and homogeneity of liquid manure. Our data show that the samples treated with Active NS were more homogeneous and had better rheological properties than the control samples. The samples taken from various depths showed more even dry matter, ash and organic matter distribution as a result of treatment. As regards the distribution of dry matter content in the studied three layers, the proportions were 20:20:60 in the control sample and 30:33:37% in the treated sample, which means that the treatment provided a virtually even distribution. Experiences with draining: The time required for draining reduced from 3-4 hours to hours. As a result of treatment, the liquid manure became more even, and no pockets of solidified liquid manure could be formed. Since less rinsing was required in the draining process, water consumption could be reduced considerably. Blockages did not occur at all. Frequency of ear injuries: The frequency of injuries and abrasions reduced by approx. 60% to some one-third of the frequency observed in the control group. The size of abrasions was significantly smaller in the test group that received Active NS treatment, and the majority of abrasions healed by the end of the rearing period. The abrasion rate was 92% in the control group (210 out of 229) and only 25-30% (45 out of 181 and 72 out of 233) in the test group. Csaba Mihalik (MESTER-PIG Sertéstenyésztő Kft.) summarises the experiences as follows: We use a liquid manure system in our pig farming establishment. Blockages used to be a daily problem. Another problem was the high frequency of ear abrasions, mainly in pigs in boxes. As a result of applying the additive Active NS, the homogeneity of liquid manure has improved, draining has become much easier, and blockages have stopped to occur. Since much less sedimentation can be expected in the storage tank, it will be easier to pump the manure when it is discharged onto the cropland. The concentration of harmful gases has reduced in the pig rearing areas, which has led to a significant decrease in the number and severity of ear injuries, also making a beneficial impact on weight increase.
Active NS provides perfect slurry management What is Active NS? Active NS is a 100% natural product primarily composed of three various types of pre-processed clay minerals. This unique blend gives the product an exceptionally high ion-exchange effect. P 3 (n) = i (i+1) 2 Tetraedre 1 = n(n+1)(n+2) 6 The porous substances in the powder are structured as an open lattice of tetrahedrons with inner cavities capable of absorbing and releasing ions, essentially operating as a molecular sieve. The Active NS powder works according to the principle of exchanging negatively and positively charged ions. This binds the ammonia to the slurry, massively reducing the amount of ammonia vapour. The powder also has a positive effect on the slurry during agitation, producing a more homogenous mass. Active NS is a natural product, which can be used in organic as well as in conventional farm holding. Active NS can be used on pig and cattle farms as well as in bio-gas plants. Active NS quickly and easily establishes a stable floating crust on the slurry tank. Active NS binds nitrogen in slurry and thus yields improved fertilizer value. Active NS facilitates trouble-free flow in preliminary tanks, slurry channels and containers. Active NS produces much less sedimentation and facilitates easier stirring of slurry tanks. Instructions: 1. Add 20 g Active NS slurry additive per m 3 of slurry in the tank 2. Then add 20 g Active NS slurry additive per m 3 of slurry in the containers 3. Each time after emptying, add 20 g Active NS slurry additive per m 3 slurry capacity in the channels This will add 20 g Active NS slurry additive to the slurry you produce.
