CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION Beginning drawing is a foundation course. It is an introduction to perspective, gridding for enlargement, value study, form, analysis, composition, and drawing concerns such as content, historical/cultural context, technique, and aesthetics. Work is in standard drawing media. It is required of all art majors and prerequisite to all studio courses. Two hours lecture, four hours lab per week. CSU;UC (CAN ART 8) CLASS SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION Emphasis on perspective, gridding for enlargement, composition, form, and spatial analysis along with their relationships to content, aesthetics, and historical contexts. Work is in standard drawing media. Required of all art majors and a prerequisite to all studio courses. CSU;UC (CAN ART 8) COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate skill in using principles of representational renderings and non-

2 ART 111 Beginning Drawing Page 2 representational drawing to communicate creatively 2. explain and discriminate between the use of a variety of drawing media 3. list, define, and apply the four uses of value for description, expression, composition, and decoration 4. list, define, and use principles of line variation to formulate solutions to composition and spatial manipulation 5. demonstrate drawing methods for thoughtful manipulation of spatial effect through linear, isometric, and open perspective as well as other types: overlapping parallels, receding and projecting planes 6. explain and render simulated, actual, abstracted, and invented textures 7. apply standard methods for enlarging a drawing and transferring drawings 8. explain how technique influences overall meaning of drawings 9. define and explain four traditional uses of value for composition, expression, description, and decoration 10. understand the art-historical context of drawing styles and approaches including cultural differences which influence them 11. assess artworks for aesthetic qualities 12. analyze museum or gallery art works for drawing elements and approaches 13. participate in critical analysis of drawings, to include discussion of technical concerns, concepts (historical, intellectual, cultural, emotional, etc.) and their contexts REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS A Guide to Drawing, Mendelowitz/Wakeham The reading for this course is: PRIMARILY COLLEGE LEVEL

3 ART 111 Beginning Drawing Page 3 Materials required: drawing board and clips graphite drawing pencils kneaded eraser chamois (approx. 6" x 6") spray fixative with a workable finish x-acto knife and blades bond paper pad (18" x 24") vine charcoal charcoal pencil compressed charcoal conte (1 black, 1 brown, 1 red) box (fishing tackle, shoebox, etc. for supplies) sketchbook drawing ink 24 metal ruler with cork backing 10 clear plastic triangle additional materials and supplies may be added by each individual instructor REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS OUTSIDE OF CLASS Over an 18 week presentation of the course three hours per week are required for each unit of credit. Two hours of independent work done out of class are required for each hour of lecture. Students will be required to complete the following types of assignments outside of the regular class time: Draw Study Answer questions Practice skills Read required materials Solve problems Write essays, research papers, reports, or journals Observe activities related to course content Participate in activities related to course content Visit art galleries and museums DEGREE APPLICABLE COURSE: 2 hours of independent work done out of class per each hour of lecture or class work, or 3 hours lab, practicum, or the equivalent, per unit. COURSE CONTENT

Organization of Pictorial Space A. Use of line variation: contour, gestural, modeled, and weighted B. Use of perspective to create space 1. one-point perspective 2. two-point perspective C. Value used to render form in space 1. flat value areas: lateral/shallow space 2. value range, gradations: illusionistic, deep space 3. shading: highlight, half-tone, reflected light, plus form, cast and core shadow 4. converging parallels, overlapping images, size variation, diminishing detail interpenatration, and value changes D. Composing both positive and negative space using alternatives to centered compositions Content A. Representational vs non-representational, abstract B. Meaning, style, subject matter C. ESSAY OR SUBSTANTIAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT Includes not only "blue book" examinations but any written assignment of sufficient length and complexity to require students to select and organize ideas as well as to explain them.
