26 About Åland Åland is a home-ruled, demilitarized and Swedish speaking territory that belongs to Finland. The Ålanders have competence to make their own laws regarding health- and medical services, internal communications, education, culture and ancient monument preservation, industry, the police, the postal service, radio and television and the local administration. The legislative assembly of Åland (Lagtinget) also appoints the executive power of Åland (Landskapsregeringen/The Government of Åland). Ålandreceiveditsownflagin1954anditsownstampsin Since 1970, Åland has its own representation in the Nordic Council. The Government of Åland also participates in the work of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Åland joined the European Union in 1995, but stands outside the EU tax union.

27 The statistical information in Åland in figures is taken mainly from the Statistical Yearbook of Åland. It is produced annually by the Statistics Åland (ÅSUB). ÅSUB is an independent public organization. Its main task is to function as the official statistics authority of the Åland Islands and conduct qualified research. Statistical compilations are for example made regarding population, education, elections, tourism, national accounts, wages, prices and rents. This information is published in the ÅSUB Statistik (ÅSUB Statistics) and ÅSUB Statistikmeddelande (ÅSUB Statistical notes) series.
