3 3, 5 and 10 Mile Catchment Areas Seaham Major Centre 3, 5 and 10 Mile Catchment Areas Crown Copyright. Durham County Council. LA The following document provides indicators for the Seaham Major Centre and its 3, 5 and 10 mile catchment radii ie: the areas displayed in the map above. The data for these areas have been estimated by using Output Areas small scale geographical boundaries that were used as the building blocks for the 2001 Census. 1

4 3, 5 and 10 Mile Catchment Areas The figures in this document are a subset of the Major Centre Catchment Area 2001 Census Summary Sheets that can be found on the Durham County Council CR&I website at Also to be found at this same address are comprehensive profiles for the current wards, frozen wards, town and parish boundaries, and the settlements within the County. For further information regarding the importance of the catchment areas surrounding the major centres of, a detailed note entitled The Polycentric Approach can also be found at The following table shows the districts covered by the different catchment areas and the proportion of their populations that have been included in the calculation of the subsequent indicators. The larger catchment areas clearly include local authority districts outside the County boundary, (these have been displayed in italic text). 20 Deprivation Deprivation The 2004 Index of Deprivation was originally constructed so that comparisons could be made between Super Output Areas (geographical boundaries encompassing on average 1,500 people) across the whole of England. The data from this index has been modelled by the CR&I team so that it corresponds to the rest of the figures in this document for the major centre and its 3, 5 and 10 mile catchment areas. The results from the index show how deprivation is distributed at a small area level across England. The overall measure is made up of seven different categories, or domains these can be seen in the table on the next page. (Please note that the overall figure is not a straight forward addition of the seven domains). Each domain gives a direct comparison with the rest of the county and shows how many people living within the major centre catchment area fall within the top, 10- and 20-3 of the nationally deprived total. For more detail on the Index of Deprivation a comprehensive report for the whole of can be found at 18
