UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES Precalculus for Scientists and Engineers Math 117 Sample Syllabus Fall 2011 Instructor: Office: address: TEXTBOOK: ISBN: Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus 6 th E-Stewart + EWA(Enhanced Web Assign) - Loose-Leaf version REQUIRED MATERIALS FOR CLASS - Purchase the TEXTBOOK and WEB ASSIGN access code immediately. 1. Appropriate pages from the textbook. 2. Your work from textbook assignments. 3. Scientific calculator (must have trig functions and exponential and log functions). 4. Lots of paper for notes and doing problems. 5. Graph paper. COURSE PREREQUISITES: Math Placement Level IV or above OR successfully completing Math 010 Intermediate Algebra or successful completion of the PPP. If you are enrolled without the appropriate prerequisites, please be advised this is not recommended and that you do so at your own risk. The content of Math 010 is assumed to be known and you may be at serious jeopardy if you have not mastered it prior to taking Math 117. COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is designed to prepare you for Math 241 Analytic Geometry and Calculus A. The major topics of this course include a review and summary of algebra skills, functions and associated notation, linear functions, quadratic functions, graphing principles, composition of functions, inverse functions, polynomial functions, radical functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, and trigonometric functions. We focus on algebraic manipulations involving various types of functions and study fundamental algebraic and graphical characteristics of each function type as well as explore equations and inequalities associated with these functions. A complete list of topics, along with the textbook assignments, is provided later in this document. If you are not enrolling in Math 241 next semester, please check with your advisor to ensure that this is the correct course. Please note: Many students underestimate the difficulty of this material, especially if they had precalculus or calculus previously. Students should allocate a minimum of 12 hours outside of the class time (3 hours for every course credit) for completing the textbook assignments, summarizing your course notes, memorizing strategies and formulas, and reviewing the problems for quizzes or other course activities. Please carefully schedule other activities such as work or other courses to allow enough time to work on this course. CALCULATOR POLICY: A scientific calculator is allowed and, in some cases, required on all exams and

Math 117 Sample Syllabus Fall 2011 Page 2 quizzes. A graphing calculator is NOT allowed. Calculators will not be provided. COURSE RESOURCES: Make sure to explore these resources within the first few weeks of the semester to determine how best to utilize them within your study plan. Textbook: Your textbook provides numerous materials for learning and practicing your skills and understandings. Use the chapter reviews for additional problem practice. Web Assign: Associated with your textbook is a web-based software program, Web Assign. In addition to several required activities, there are other helpful resources including solutions to specific textbook assigned problems and videos. Tutoring and individual assistance: Office hours: Any time you are having difficulty with the assignment or are concerned about your course progress, please come and see me during office hours. When you come to office hours, come prepared! Bring all course work including your textbook assignments and course presentation notes when you come to office hours. These materials provide me with clues as to where you may be having difficulties. The Mathematics Tutorial Lab: Limited, but free, tutorial assistance is available in 106 Ewing Hall. No appointment is necessary. The hours are tentatively scheduled 11 to 7 Monday through Thursday, 11 to 3 on Friday. Office of Academic Enrichment: This campus resource provides a list of individual tutors for hire and also some free tutorial resources. Please look on the web for more information. ACADEMIC HONESTY: It is assumed the work you submit is your own work. Copying another student s work is considered cheating. Using formulas programmed in a calculator is considered cheating. Remember, the point of these assignments and activities is to determine whether you understand the concept not whether you can plug it into a calculator. The following statement is from the Student Guide to University Policies. All students must be honest and forthright in their academic studies. To falsify the results of one s research, to steal the words or ideas of another, to cheat on an assignment, or to allow or assist another to commit these acts corrupts the educational process. Students are expected to do their own work and neither give nor receive unauthorized assistance. Any violation of this standard must be reported to the Office of Judicial Affairs. If you observe or know of someone who is violating the university policies, please let me know. We are all responsible for maintaining an academic environment that encourages a fair assessment of learning. Please look at the Student Handbook for further information.

Math 117 Sample Syllabus Fall 2011 Page 3 COURSE GRADES: Your final grade will be determined by the accumulation of points. There will be several graded activities: Three exams, each exam is 180 points: Instructor Designated Points: Final Exam (cumulative) Total 540 points 210 points 250 points 1000 points There are no exceptions to this grading scheme. No exam grades will be dropped, curved, or modified. Letter Grades are assigned as follows: A A B B B C C C D D D F Below 566 GRADED ACTIVITY POLICIES: Exams (540 points): Math 117 exams are administered on Fridays: September 23, October 14 and November 18 from 5 to 7 pm. You should be in your assigned room by 4:45 pm. Your room assignment will be announced in class. Bring pencils, eraser, and a scientific calculator to every exam. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES including phones, I pads, small computers, language translators or other devices that access the web are allowed. IMPORTANT!! These are the only days and times the exams are given. It is your responsibility to ensure you have no scheduling conflicts. You MUST be present for each exam. The exam dates and times are not negotiable. (Your course schedule will automatically include Fridays as part of the Math 117 course only these three Fridays will be required.) Those students who have a verified, documented, and approved university excuse for missing a scheduled course hour exam will have that score replaced by the average of the percentage scores of other hour exams and the final exam. NO MAKE UP EXAMS WILL BE ADMINISTERED! Excused absences do NOT include weekend family events or any appointments that can be scheduled alternative times. Exams are important indicators of course progress and missing an exam (even with an excused absence) will make it difficult to monitor your course progress. Students should carefully consider the implications of missing an exam. Students who miss an exam for an unexcused absence will receive a grade of zero.

Math 117 Sample Syllabus Fall 2011 Page 4 Tentative Exam Coverage: The following is subject to change as announced by your instructor: Exam 1: Friday, September 23 Chap 1 and sections Exam 2: Friday, October 14 Sections , Exam 3: Friday, November 18 Sections 10.1, 10.7, 10.8, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Final Exam (250 points): The final will be scheduled by the University during finals week, Friday, December 9 Friday, December 16. Please do not make your travel arrangements for the holidays until you know when all your final exams are scheduled. The final is cumulative and will count for 25% of your final course grade. It covers all the sections listed in the Textbook Assignments, including sections covered after the third exam. Instructor Designated Points (210 points): Course activities such as in-class quizzes, in-class activities, Web Assign Summary Activities, and class participation, will be included in your final course grade as follows: In-class activities such as quizzes or other graded work: 100 points Web Assign Summary Activities: 100 points Class participation: 10 points (This may change your course grade by a +/-) Most in-class activities such as quizzes will be announced during a prior class. Class activities such as completing problems from the textbook may not be announced beforehand so please bring appropriate textbook pages to every class. Due dates for Web Assign Summary Activities are available on your course Web Assign home page. Class participation (10 points) includes answering questions in class, participating in class discussions, and coming to class prepared with the appropriate course materials. Course points will be deducted if a student: Has five or more unexcused absences. Does not bring the appropriate materials to class including course booklet, calculator and textbook. Routinely arrives late or leaves early disrupting the class. Is texting during class. Routinely does not complete the textbook problems.

Math 117 Sample Syllabus Fall 2011 Page 5 TEXTBOOK ASSIGNMENTS: Doing the textbook assignments as the material is covered in class is the single most important thing you can do to help yourself learn the course material and be successful on the exams. The following table contains the textbook assignments for the course. As topics are covered in class, the associated textbook exercises are to be completed for the following class (even if not announced in class). For example, if I cover sections 2.2 and 2.3 in class, assume you are to do the associated textbook assignment for the next class. Keep in mind that these assignments are discussed in class and might be collected. If you see REVIEW after a topic, it means the topic is covered in Intermediate Algebra and is considered review for this course. You should be familiar with the topic and only a limited amount of class time will be spent on the topic.
