1 Spread the News Get the word out early so everyone knows about the Book Fair and Family Event. Advertise Place an article in the school newsletter and on the school website with details about your Book Fair and Family Event. Display Book Fair dates on the school marquee. Talk up your Book Fair with Book Talks! Ask your Book Fair Consultant for details about our popular Book Talk-in-a-Box program. Bulletin Board Ask students to design and decorate a themed bulletin board, located near the school entrance or main office. Parent Focus Send Parent Letters and Highlights flyers home with students one (1) week before the Fair (see Printable Resources section of our website for a sample letter). Promotional Materials Select students to record Book Talks of themselves at the Book Fair to air on your morning announcements. Display the Entrance Poster found in your Planning Kit at the main entrance to help promote your Fair. Directional Arrows and other Promotional Posters have also been provided to display throughout your school. Download the Teachers Sneak Peek Poster, and post it in the teachers lounge, along with copies of the Highlights flyers. P.A. Skit Use your morning announcements to promote your Book Fair and Family Event. Ask student volunteers to read this skit over the PA system to get everyone excited. Pre-Fair Script Gooooood morning dudes and dudettes! The Scholastic Groovy Book Fair is coming to our school! This radical reading event takes place [INSERT DATES] and everyone is invited! There will be fun activities, awesome contests, and a fabulous Family Event on [INSERT DATE]. Plus, if you bring your whole family to the Groovy Book Fair, you ll have the chance to win FREE BOOKS! Don t miss out! Reading makes everything groovy! During Fair script Did you get your books yet? What are you waiting for? Jump on the soul train and head to the [BOOK FAIR LOCATION] to find the best book of the season. There are only [INSERT NUMBER] days left. Read on!
2 Build Excitement! Generate plenty of fun and anticipation among students and staff with some themed contests!* Decorative Doors Challenge teachers to decorate their classrooms using the groovy theme. Ask students to vote on their favourite. Guessing Games Create an Estimation Station with multiple games for kids of different grades. Invite students to guess how many pieces of candy, petals on the flowers, or pages in the stack of books. Groovy Costume Contest Encourage students and volunteers to dress in their favourite groovy outfits. Hold a contest the week of your Book Fair for the most original costume and announce the winners at the Family Event. Write a Groovy Story Ask students to write their own story starting with the line It was a totally groovy day when suddenly Post the entries near your Book Fair entrance and select a panel to determine the winners. Groovy Scavenger Hunt Create a scavenger hunt and give clues during daily announcements leading up to the Fair. Classes that find the hidden item earn a chance to win a prize. *Contests: Ask local sponsors for prize contributions and use your sample display posters as prize giveaways. Use Contest Ballots and Winner Certificates reproducibles provided.
3 Make it a Family Event! Hold a special Family Event so parents and students can shop together. Try some of these fun and easy suggestions: Activity Corner Set up a special area for younger children to read or colour while parents shop. Ask a volunteer or some older students to supervise. Ballot Box Make a themed box to collect Family Event Door Prize ballots place it near the cashier table. Classroom Wish List Encourage teachers and families to grant book wishes. Invite local businesses to take part with donations to purchase Wish List books. Groovy Photo Op Create a great white entrance out of insulation foam sheets. It doubles as a fun photo op for Family Events! Have one or two volunteers in costume greet visitors as they arrive for your Family Event. Student Showcase Display contest entries, artwork, poems, stories and other theme-related items created by students. Volunteers* Have your volunteers wear name badges to be easily recognized at the Fair. They can also wear t-shirts decorated with the Groovy logo. * See Volunteer Recruitment Poster and Volunteer Name Badges provided. You can also download artwork from the Printable Resources section of our website onto printer transfer sheets (available at craft stores) and then iron onto t-shirts or other items. Create suspense! Make a countdown sign to place outside the doors of your Fair. Have A Groovy Selfie Event! It s a DIY photo op. Keep a stash of props available for kids and their families to use for silly selfies at the Fair. Fun Crafts Get students involved with fun arts and crafts projects. Use them to decorate the Fair or as parts of contests. Read-In Signs Use poster board and coloured construction paper to make big Read-In signs to encourage students to come the Fair! Flower danglers Make giant flowers, peace signs, and smiley faces danglers using construction paper and paint. Suspend from the ceiling and hang on the walls.
4 Create a Fun Atmosphere! Try some of these fun ideas to create an atmosphere that s full of excitement! Ask volunteers and creative students to lend their talents. Host a teacher preview to give teachers a chance to shop the Fair and make their Classroom Wish List selections. Keep your preview entertaining with the Book Fair theme. Rev up the excitement by hosting a drive-in movie experience, complete with retro buses for each student! Show the Author Videos (available online) and distribute the highlights flyers to boost kids excitement about the upcoming Fair. Reward your students when you catch them reading! Wear a groovy hand puppet to deliver raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes.
5 Reach Your Book Fair Goals! Make your Book Fair a blast and encourage your school and community to reach those literacy goals. Try these fun ideas: Show how much you lava reading! Build a lava lamp with milestones that increase as you pull the string. Watch the lava float to the top as you meet your goals! Run through a cloud of coloured chaos! Celebrate with a Very Fun Colour Run when your school reaches your Book Fair goals. Create suspense with a countdown sign outside the doors of your Fair. Place it 30 days before your Fair.
