2 From the Campus Principal Jane Kuok Dear Parents and Tenby Community, A few days ago, it was reported in the newspapers that government schools will have a three day weekend holiday for Deepavali. Please note that the Tenby Schools Group will not follow this and our schools will resume as planned on Monday 31st October. Council of International Schools (CIS) Membership Visit CIS is a global non-profit membership organisation that provides services to primary and secondary schools, higher education institutions and individuals that share these ideals: a desire to provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to pursue their lives as global citizens; and a commitment to high quality international education. To achieve this goal, CIS members must infuse their programmes and offerings with international and intercultural perspective so that students can move forward with the attitudes and understanding that will provide them with a solid base wherever their studies or work may take them. Primary and secondary school members must further commit to undertaking an ongoing external quality assurance process to enhance student learning. The CIS community includes 711 schools and 512 colleges and universities representing 112 countries. The School is applying for CIS Membership so that we may adopt this model of continuous school improvement. We look forward to welcoming Dr. William (Bill) Parker, CIS School Support & Evaluation Officer on Wednesday 2nd November and Thursday 3rd November to the School. He will get a chance to meet with students, staff and parents as well as visit classrooms to see what learning is like at Tenby Ipoh. Deepavali Assembly and Traditional Dress Up Day Meru Campus will hold its Deepavali Assembly on Friday 21st October and TEYCI will hold their Deepavali Assembly on Thursday 20th October. We invite the entire community to embrace our school cultural events by dressing up. Our Vision is about celebrating with one another, our similarities and our differences. These celebrations are in line with our Vision United World At Peace Through Education as we encourage our students to celebrate and appreciate the different festivities in Malaysia and around the world. Fire Drill Walk Through We did a walk through evacuation to the School Field this morning. It was the fastest that the School have ever evacuated the buildings and we are happy to report that it was a huge improvement from previous practices and in line with health & safety expectations.

3 SAFE STEPS Road Safety Awareness Programme During last month s campaign on Pedestrian Safety, the Primary school launched a poem/rap competition and the winners are Annika Enriquez (Y5T), Rajeev Anil (Y5E), Chai Jocelyn (Y5N), Sydnee Chong Shue Yi (Std. 3T), Bryan Goh (Std. 6) and Nur Diya Sabrina (Std. 3 E). Congratulations to the winners. Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) (Contributed by Mr. Doug Foo: Head of Student Affairs) We are looking into broadening the CCA programmes for next term and would like to invite you to share your ideas. Here are some of the ideas that we have. First of all, we are looking at the possibility of offering morning practice sessions for school teams. There will also be Lunch Time Clubs next term which include compulsory physical training and team training for children in the school teams. Some examples of Lunch Time Club activities are art, music, board games. Any CCA that involves physical training will start at the beginning of lunch time so that students work out first then eat. For students who join other clubs they can eat first then proceed to their Lunch Time Club. Besides this, there will be changes to after school CCAs next term. New games like volleyball, rugby, handball, gymnastics, cheerleading and non-contact Muay Thai are some of the sports that we are looking into adding to our current CCAs programme. We aim to develop more school teams in future. The Track & Field CCA will be split into two days owing to the large number of students we have at the moment. Yoga/pilates, aerobics or Zumba could also be added into the programme. Further to this, we would introduce a variety of games into the primary PE curriculum and hopefully it will encourage more primary students to join the games in CCA. Student have also indicated their interest in foreign language CCAs such as Japanese, Korean, German and Spanish. In addition, we would also like to expand the variety of cultural, community service or self-exploration related CCAs. Parents who are able and willing to support these CCAs are welcome to discuss with us. Textiles / cookery CCA may be an option in future when we have the facility in place as health and safety of students are always on top of our priority. Last but not the least, E-sports has also been quite popular with students but we must ensure the content is appropriate for all before we decide on its provision. Please note that the proposed CCAs are subject to the availability of a facility, member of staff or parent who can run it next term. Should there be a need hire an external coach/facilitator, there will be added costs. There will be charges for clubs that required extra materials weekly for example Science or Art Club. Once the CCA programmes are in place, we will share them with parents. 4 Engage Parent Portal (contributed by Mr. Daniel Centeno: Deputy Head, TIS Secondary & ENGAGE Champion) To improve communication between the school and the parents, the school has invested in a School Management System known as ENGAGE. The Parent Portal enables the parent or guardian to monitor upcoming events, school messages and school Newsletters from home. Parent Portal features include: Access to vital information on your child to ensure it correct for an emergency. Ability to view pupil and student timetables and attendance record. View events and post notices directly to the school administration. View the school calendar, letters and important notices for your child. The launch date will be the 30th October 2016 for the ENGAGE Parent Portal to become live. In the next Newsletter I will detail how to access the portal and how to check your child s personal information on the portal. The aim of the portal is to strengthen the partnership between parents and school to improve the outcomes for all the pupil s at Tenby Schools. Cognitive Abilities Test 4 (CAT4) Assessment Next week, students from Year 4, Year 7 and new students in Year 10 will be taking their CAT4 assessment. This is a test that cannot be prepped and will give the School key information on guiding your son/daughter s learning needs and identify their potential. We will share the results of this test with you. This tests will happen during the course of the usual school day, so it is important to ensure your child attends school every day next week. Sekolah Tenby students(std 3, Std 6, and Form 3) will be taking this assessment after the mid-term break. We will keep parents updated. Lost Property There has been many incidents of students leaving their books, PE kit, lab coats, tupperware, water bottles and shoes around the school. As with any school, the storage of lost property is always an issue. Often items that are lost are dirty/used and keeping the items breeds germs. Therefore, in a bid to keep lost property to the minimum, we would like to ask parents to ensure that all items belonging to students are labelled with their child s name and class. In this way, named items can be returned. Items that are not labelled will either be recycled or disposed of on a weekly basis (every Friday) Any valuable items (not encouraged) that are found will be kept in Reception. As there has been a build up of many items from the start of this term, we will display all lost items next week for them to be claimed. Thereafter, they will be disposed of or recycled.

5 Open Day Our school will have an Open Day on Saturday 15th October from 09:00hrs to 14:00hrs. Some students will be coming in to school to participate in activities planned for the day including prefects who will be tasked to take visitors on a school tour. Canteen and New Layout We have trialled the new Canteen layout for a week now and we are pleased to report that the flow is much smoother and students are able to purchase their food in a timely manner allowing them sufficient time to finish their food. The school has also recently asked for feedback from students about the Canteen. We have forwarded the students feedback to the Canteen operators and will meet with them to discuss the feedback as well as other Canteen related matters next week. Some students and Parent Association members have also been invited attend this meeting so that it will be more representative of the community. Scenes from Secondary lunch time American Maths Olympiad Students who have enrolled for the Maths Olympiad, please take note that it will be held on Wednesday 12th October. Please ensure you bring 2B pencils, eraser and a ruler. Calculators are not allowed. 6 International Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCEi) The PGCEi course is an internationally recognised masters level professional development course for graduate teachers and is one of several staff development opportunities provided by Tenby Schools Malaysia for their teachers. The course is conducted over nine months by trainers from Tenby Schools and Stranmillis University College of Queens University, Ireland. The second batch of teachers from Tenby Schools Ipoh have successfully completed their PGCEi this year. Congratulations to Janel Kong (TEYCI), Susan Thomas (International Secondary), Chiang Hui Hui (Sekolah Tenby Secondary) and Ha Xin Jue (Sekolah Tenby Primary). A graduation ceremony was held recently at Tenby Schools Setia Eco Park (KL) and it was attended by all 19 graduate teachers from Tenby Schools Malaysia, their families, representatives from Queens University, Stranmillis University College, Heads of Schools and Mr. Mark Parkinson, CEO of Tenby Schools Malaysia. The third batch comprising of 20 teachers who have been selected to participate in this training course have just commenced their PGCEi course last month. 7 News from TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH INTERACT CLUB Dateline: Friday 7th October 2016 SERVICE ABOVE SELF UPCOMING CHARITY DINNER The Tenby Interact Club will be hosting a Disney-themed charity dinner on 25th November 2016 to raise awareness of the often overlooked topic of child cancer. Child cancer is the number one cause of death by disease in children. However, in the last 20 years, only 3 cancer medications have been specifically approved for children. Currently 1 out of every 8 children, with cancer, do not survive. Therefore, Tenby Interact Club has decided to raise funds for donation; to further the progress of child cancer research and medicine. One of the many ways we ll be raising funds is by planning an auction during the dinner event. Besides that, we ll be having a costume contest and games during the dinner for an interactive experience. All the proceeds will be donated to charity. We really need the support of parents and friends of Tenby Schools in providing items that can be auctioned off during our event. 8 The Standard 6 students took part in a cake decorating competition on 28 th September Everyone was enthusiastic in decorating the marble cakes for their respective groups. After the hard work, students savoured the beautifully decorated and delicious cakes. They really enjoyed doing this fun activity as they were able to express their creativity in cake decoration. 9 Fire drill on Friday 30 th October News from Tenby Early Years Centre Ipoh Rinnggg! Hearing the sound of the fire alarm, children started to evacuate the building by the designated routes to the assembly area. The purpose of fire drill is to familiarise staff and children with the evacuation procedure so that the children know how to exit the building in the quickest, easiest and safest way possible should a fire or other emergency occur. As it was the first time experiencing a fire drill, toddlers were curious as to why the alarm was ringing non-stop. They thought it was a game until teachers explained to them what was going on. In conjunction with World Children s Day Celebration, our Reception and Year 1 children showcased their talent via dance and song at Ipoh Parade on Saturday 1 st October. Parents came in full force to give support to their child. Open day on Saturday 15 th October at TEYCI from 09:00hrs to 14:00hrs. Class photograph session will take place on Wednesday 19 th October. 11 Our Year 1 children went off for a Nature Walk to look out for natural features around the school compound. They were so amazed with their findings and upon returning to the class they recorded their journey in their nature diary. Off for a Nature Walk around the school. Look at what I found! There are plants which live on trees. Children observing and looking for hidden mini beast. We are lucky to have a papaya tree in our school ground. Wonder when it will ripen? Black millipede. Emm what a smell. These lemon grass has strong fragrance.

12 News from Primary Mathematics is a subject where you learn best by tackling problems/challenges. Every week, a new challenge will be posted here for you to pit your wits against. We invite you to have a go at solving it. If you get stuck, keep trying, and do go away and come back later- often, you will find that you have a better idea on your second, third or even fourth attempt. 13 Supporting Reading at Home (http: // Tip #3: Encouraging reading at home for young children Early readers who are starting to read fluently will enjoy longer fiction read in instalments. Continue to include books with illustrations. These may be black and white line drawings rather than full colour. Picture books continue to be important and help to develop visual literacy. Choose more complex picture books with lots of hidden or multi-layered meanings that provide lots of opportunities for discussion with your child. Continue with great series to develop confidence and familiarity. Humour is important for most children. Puns help to refine children's understanding of the different meanings that can be created with language. Include classic authors as well as more recently published writers to provide a rich and varied reading experience. Not all books read aloud well, so choose those that allow you to use a fun or lively storytelling voice and where characters' speech is distinctive. Your children will be developing individual preferences, so chat with them about the books that you share. Student Council The Student Council election is now over. Teachers are most impressed with how confident the children spoke to their peers and the election had gone well. A PTCs appointment letter has been sent out to the youngest or only child in the family. Do read the information provided carefully before filling in the form. Tenby Targets Tenby Targets are targets which your child has been set to help them improve in their learning in Literacy, Mathematics and Science. Today, you will find a Tenby Targets sheet inside your child s Student Planner (at the section Personal Goals/Targets Term 1 ). This sheet will contain the targets that your child has been set for Term 1. Please support your child at home with these targets by giving them opportunities to practice or share tips with them on how you do it. We will also be doing the same in school to help your child progress in their learning. Once the class teacher thinks your child has achieved their target, the target will be ticked and a new target will be set for your child. 15 NEWS FROM SECONDARY INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE CLUB DERBY On the 29th of September, 6 groups formed from members of the Science Club, were tasked with making cars with which to race. All cars were made from recycled material and the end results were amazing. The Harambe Drift won the race followed up by Est 1825 and the second-runners up were the Flash Car and the Rubber band- Powered Car. 16 A Feisty Fellowship Experience with Petronas University Undergrads The UTP undergrads doing their traditional hello dance! On Friday 30th September 2016, the Tenby Sixth Formers welcomed a team of undergraduates from Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Seri Iskandar, Perak.This was a fellowship get-together to promote a spirit of togetherness in action in our vision of A United World at Peace - through Education. The theme of this encounter was Taking Community Service to New Frontiers. It was part of our long-term strategy to engage our Sixth Formers in worldwide community service projects. At present, the key focus of our community service outreach is on the Orang Asli villages near Simpang Pulai, eighteen kilometres away from Ipoh, commented Tan Ee Wei (Cohort 13) our Community Service Director. We also have a charity and fellowship programme in support of the Home for Senior Citizens, Kampung Simee. The students in Cohort 12 in particular are our target group this year for community service beyond our national borders. They will be completing their A-level examinations in November 2016 and will therefore be free for several months.

17 December January 2016 would therefore be an ideal time for your Cohort 12 grads to join the AIESEC international community service programme, says Ms Jeevarupini Balakrishnan,AIESEC Vice President of the UTP (Petronas) Chapter. We have overseas projects in Indonesia,Vietnam as well as in Poland and the Czech Republic. The most interesting feature of the AIESEC programme is that it combines community service with internship experience. Thus, you achieve two goals in one endeavour, continues Jeevarupiini. For example, we have students working with Medicine Sans Borders as well as with engineering companies working on environmental projects. 18 Transition Day for KBSM 5 It was a day of earnest soul-searching and thinking about the best options for their post-spm plans. More than sixty fifth-formers from SM Tenby Ipoh were given an outline plan of the new-look Sixth Form A-level programme that awaits them. Neo Lean Wern of KBSM 5 describes the package as challenging, exciting and inspiring. Giving the keynote address, Mr Richard Davidson, Head of Tenby International Secondary School outlined the framework of a pre-university experience that not only promises academic excellence but incorporates the C.A.S.E elements that will give our sixth formers the credentials to excel at university and beyond.

19 The C.A.S.E elements are as follows: C = CREATIVITY (Development of the full potential/talents of every student) A = ACTION daring...) (Sports, cultural dances, adventure trips, presentations...ever doing and S= SERVICE (Community service projects, leadership within the school, service above self) E = ENRICHMENT (Debating, drama, attending external courses, seeking new dimension of experience) Mr Davidson highlighted the key characteristics that are in demand by top-tier universities and employers in reputable organisations: Leadership skills ability to motivate others Interpersonal skills A spirit of service to others Problem-solving skills Critical thinking Effective communicational skills The Sixth Form programme at Tenby Ipoh, declared Mr Louis Rozario Doss, Head of Tenby Sixth Form will strive to give maximum personal growth in these critical areas. Our stress will be on moulding our students to be global players with Malaysian roots. Education will not just be about knowing more but BEING more. Mr Daniel Centeno s presentation focused on higher education counseling and placement in the revamped sixth form procedures.

20 We will want nothing less than the best for deserving students in terms of university placement. Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, London and Durham have places for the best but we have to frame our choices and applications early and know what they are seeking in terms of your extracurricular achievements and personal statements, Mr Centeno advised. One of my key roles will be to set up the system by which our best students can compete on an equal footing with the best from around the world. Mr K.Vinodh, Head of Science, who coordinates the HRH Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme at Tenby Schools Ipoh outlined the elements of the programme which will be an integral part of the Tenby Sixth Form programme. Mdm Lau Pin Sian, Head of Maths, conducted an interactive session on A Level Maths which was designed to give the students a foretaste of the Maths curriculum and its mode of delivery. Divided into six groups, the participants were given problemsolving challenges that brought fun and real life relevance to maths. Our January 2017 A-Level course commences 3 rd January 2017.

21 A Preview of Macbeth at School Assembly When shall we meet again? In thunder, lightning or in rain? When the hurly burly s done, When the battle s lost and won. With these ominous words, the three witches danced their way through the dimly-lit aisles in the audience to the stage where their Cohort 14 were presenting a preview of Shakespeare s classic Macbeth. Set in war-torn Scotland in the 10th century, Macbeth is a study of how power can corrupt, and how absolute power corrupts absolutely. Directed by Sixth Former and Si Wu scholar Jyrteanna Teo, the play is taking good shape through the weekly drama practices that have taken place since commencent in June The drama experience is a wonderful bonding experience for us sixth formers who have come from six different schools in Ipoh. Everyone in class gets to work together by the sheer dynamics of theatre practice, remarks Jyrteanna. We look forward to an opportunity to perform the entire play before our Tenby schools by the first week of November Beyond that, we hope to bring the play to various schools and universities in Perak, adds Stephanie Cheah who provides the music and audio-visual support for the performance.
