2 GCSE English Language and Literature The new GCSE English Language and Literature course is for first examination in This is a two year course and culminates in 100% external examinations. Students will sit two English Language and two English Literature exams in the summer (June). English Language Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing Written exam 1 hour 45 minutes (80 marks 50% of GCSE) Section A: Reading one literature fiction text 1 short form question, 2 longer form questions, 1 extended question. Section B: Descriptive or narrative writing 1 extended writing question. Paper 2: Writers Viewpoints and Perspectives Written exam 1 hour 45 minutes (80 marks 50% of GCSE) Section A: Reading one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text - 1 short form question, 2 longer form questions, 1 extended question. Section B: Writing Writing to present a viewpoint = 1 extended writing question. Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language Presenting, Responding to questions and feedback, Use of Standard English. English Literature Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19 th - century novel Written exam = 1 hour 45 minutes (64 marks 40% of GCSE) Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) 1 question Write in detail about an extract from the play and then write about the play as a whole. The 19 th Century Novel (Jekyll and Hyde) - Write in detail about an extract from the novel and then write about the novel as a whole. Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry Written exam 2 hours 15 minutes (96 marks 60% of GCSE) Modern texts (An Inspector Calls) 1 question from a choice of 2. Poetry (Collection of poems with the theme of Conflict ) 1 comparative question on one named poem and one other poem from the collection. Unseen Poetry - 1 question on one unseen poem, 1 question comparing this poem with a second unseen poem.

3 Legacy GCSE English Language and Literature The legacy GCSE English Language and Literature course is for final examination in 2016 (Current Year 11 Cohort). The course is made up of a Controlled Assessment element and an Examination element, to be taken in the summer (June). English Language Controlled Assessments 4 written assignments (40% of GCSE) Understanding written texts (extended reading) 1 task based on one whole text (Of Mice and Men). Producing creative texts (creative writing) 2 creative writing tasks. Spoken Language study 1 task exploring an aspect of spoken language. Examination (60% of GCSE) Section A: Reading 4 questions linked to three unseen extracts (Fiction/Non-Fiction). Section B: Writing 1 question Writing to Inform/Describe, 1 question Writing to Argue/Persuade. English Literature Controlled Assessment - 1 written assignment - (25% of GCSE) Shakespeare and the English Literary Heritage Comparison of two texts. Examinations 2 external exams (75% of GCSE) Paper 1 - Exploring modern texts Section A: Modern prose or drama 1 question from a choice of two on a text studied (An Inspector Calls) Section B: Exploring cultures 1 question (2 parts) on a text studied (Of Mice and Men) Paper 2 Poetry across time Section A: 1 question from a choice of two on the poetry cluster they have studied (Relationships/Conflict). Section B: 1 question on a previously unseen poem. Speaking and listening non-examination assessments - 3 activities Presenting/Discussing and Listening/Role playing.
